The problem with the Socceroos

Post by dudley »

we dont experiment enough, we dont give young talent a chance, we pick old has beens ahead off giving a new fresh face a go.

ie Archie Thompson instead of say picking Leckie.

We have made the last two world cups and may well make a third, why not pick a fresh fast paced young talented squad in 2014,ok we may get knocked out the group stage but for the asian cup in 2015 we will be better off, for 2018 world cup we will be better off.

look what happend in south africa, we picked the usual suspects blooded no one and still got knocked out in the group stage......so why not EXPERMENT WITH YOUTH!!!!!!!

name your squad.....and then tell me how many of your young squad are actually getting regular game time at their clubs....The majority of these older players are still playing at the highest level.....thing is we HAVE to make the world cup.....Do you really think a young team would of put in a performance like the socceroos did against Japan in the last game? I say get to the world cup and then rebuild for the asian cup

Out of the latest squad. Neill, Carney, Oga, Bresh, Brosque, Archie, Kruse, North are all players in the squad and got game time that aren't playing at the highest level and aren't getting regular game time.

I completely agree out with the old IMO. Sure we can't afford to lose players like Cahill, Bresh and Kewell still has a part to play as well IMO, but players like Rhys Williams, Chris Herd, Tommy Oar, Matthew Leckie, Shane Lowry, Michael Zullo, Ruka and Troisi are all players that have been repeatedly over looked by Holger in favour of the previously mentioned. Why? Sure not all these kids are getting huge gametime either but they are all playing in Europe and decent clubs at a level far higher then ALL of the players I mentioned.
At some point all the 'golden' generation players are going to retire (many already have) and as we clearly saw with the Australian Cricket side after Warne and McGrath retired if you haven't blooded your youth and got them used to the higher level you are definately going to experience a rapid decline in results. I mean Warne and McGrath retired from tests in 2007 and 5 years later we're still struggling to replace them. If side want consistant success you either have to spend big or wisely develop youth. Since the FFA has bugger all cash and not a great idea on how to spend it in a lot of cases. I think we need to be far far smarter with our youth development at the highest level.

I agree with most of this but I would say that Neill, Ogg and Bresh still have some part to play in the group. What I would like to see is these older players rotated through so that some of the younger players are given an opportunity. Williams, Herd, McGowan, Lowry should be given more time or even some time to get into the squad and learn off the older guys. Getting experinece into these guys for us is going to be important as we don't have the depth like many of the big football nations do.

i think holger is trying to find the perfect blend knowing that after brazil all the old heads will retire, hence he is blooding new players all the time, still 2 years to the world cup so lots can change but i think he needs to use friendlies to have a look at the next generation

Who is he blooding? I think the Sunday over 35's league has a lower average age then the socceroos.

....and there was me thinkingthatthe answer is obvious - the players being picked are just not good enough to play at the top level.

But the answer to why that is isn't. What has changed that we go from almost certainly the best generation of footballers we've ever produced to this?
