Players Names On Shirts

Post by swannsong »

Just wanted to hear some discussion on this subject.
Although I take some pride in seeing my son's surname on the back of his shirt...I'm wondering if it is the right thing to be doing at an early age?
Wouldn't it be more conducive to the "team game" philosophy to leave their names off the shirts until they are older ?
I think on club training shirts it is OK, but I have always wondered if it is sending the wrong message out to young children.

Swanny, you are looking too deep brother ....

When a kid gets 'his' own shirt with 'his' own name, there is nothing prouder for them, and I guarantee he will play for the shirt .....

If anything, drop the names when they get older .....

so is the player playing for his name or shirt?

Some clubs don't do it to recycle shirts the following year and save the club money.
Some clubs include their shirts with their fees and I'm sure include the cost of name printing within the fees.
Some clubs include their shirt and don't do it to save money on their fees for parents.

I don't think it really matters, however my personal view is either make every team do it from top to bottom or do not allow it, other than on training shirts.

Maybe I tend to look a little deep :)
It's just that whe children go to private schools and many public schools the emphasis is on uniform code.
Having a surname emblazoned on the back of a team "uniform" is a modern thing and seems to go in the face of uniformity. (then again I think that about the rainbow range of boot colours that are aout there.)
Personally I think surnames on the back of football shirts are more of a buzz for the parents than the child !

Heard a rumour that some people have no idea what they're are talking about.
Time for some righteous indignation

What do parents do with all the shirts with names on the boys get over the years?? I would rather the club get good quality shirts that would last a couple of years.
A waste of money kids getting a shirt every year just so their parents can see there name , I believe kids dont realy care.

Clubs also save that spot for sponsors.

Hmmm, I believe kids really do care!!...

Some get them signed by their teamates and keep them as momento's.

Interesting idea??? I have children who are playing at junior level and senior level also. They have collected many shirts over the years, some with names, others without. Between them they have been at 4 teams and I've yet to see anyone do this?

I believe it would be great if kids were to do this to give them good memories about the players they have played with and the teams they have contributed to.

Just curious if anyone else out there has seen this happen?

It really depends on the club. At our club the player's shirt with his/her name on the back is included in the fees. The next season, providing the shirt still fits, they can play another season in that same shirt and the parents get a reduction on their fees. My son wore the same shirt for three seasons without needing to replace it. If you buy it bigger in the first place then this works out fine.

Is it just me, or can anyone else see the irony of many clubs' juniors having their names on their shirts yet their semi-professional seniors don't?

Too hard in seniors .......... different players playing every week, moving between Firsts, Reserves and u19s, who all usually have different sponsors, hence, different looking shirts

Actually, you're prob. right Z.J. They're moving up & down 'tween As, Reserves & 19s.
Is it just your neighbours @ Uncle Bob's who have the names on?

ps Z.J., you went easy on me this time trying to highlight the Laws-of-the-Game AGM of last Saturday 3/3/12 & Franz Beckenbauer's Task Force "Football 2014" input into Ye Olde I.F.A.B. agenda. Appreciate that.

also helps talent identification for those coaches involvedin that area. you don't need to go round asking who's number 3... the name is there for you to see.

Just a thought...Could also have a different impact if the talent scout sees a surname they recognise it could influence their perception ??
