Socceroos call for Ognenovski and Coe

Post by the_gun »

Australia coach Holger Osieck named a 20-man squad for the upcoming international friendly against Egypt at the Cairo International Stadium on Wednesday 17 November (Thursday 18 November AEDT).

Osieck will be using the match as an important part of the Socceroos' preparations for the AFC Asian Cup 2011, which will be held in Qatar in January.

Socceroos captain Lucas Neill returns to the squad after missing the last match against Paraguay due to injury, along with Brett Holman who has fully recovered from a calf injury that he sustained in the recent international against Poland.

Defender Sasa Ognenovski receives his first call-up to the Socceroos squad after a stellar season with his K-League club Seongnam Illwha, where he captained his team to the AFC Champions League final and also gained a nomination for the AFC Player of the Year Award along with Tim Cahill.

Ognenovski will join the Socceroos squad after facing Zob Ahan of Iran in the AFC Champions League 2010 final on Saturday 13 November in Tokyo.

Denmark-based goalkeeper Nathan Coe receives his second ever call up to the Socceroos squad, after last being selected for the international friendly against Nigeria, which was played in London on 19 November 2007.

Although having represented Australia on many occasions at Under 17 and Under 20 levels,Sonderjysk Elitesports' Coe is yet to make his senior international debut for the Socceroos.

Jason Culina, Michael Thwaite, Matt McKay and Jade North are the four A-League representatives in the squad.

Egypt is currently the top ranked nation in the African Football Confederation (CAF), the reigning Africa Cup of Nations Champions and 11th in the FIFA World Rankings.

The Socceroos have met Egypt only once before in the semi-finals of the 1987 President’s Cup tournament in Seoul in the Korea Republic. The match ended nil-all at the end of regulation time, with the Socceroos winning 4-3 in a penalty shoot-out.

Socceroos squad is: Tim CAHILL (Everton FC, England), David CARNEY (Blackpool FC, England), Nathan COE (gk) (Sonderjysk Elitesport, Denmark), Jason CULINA (Gold Coast United, A-League), Brett EMERTON (Blackburn, England), Richard GARCIA (Hull City FC, England), Brett HOLMAN (AZ Alkmaar, Netherlands), Mile JEDINAK (Genclerbirligi SK, Turkey), Josh KENNEDY (Nagoya Grampus, Japan), Harry KEWELL (Galatasaray SK, Turkey), Scott McDONALD (Middlesbrough FC, England), Matt McKAY (Brisbane Roar, A-League), Lucas NEILL (Galatasaray SK, Turkey), Jade NORTH (Wellington Phoenix, A-League), Sasa OGNENOVSKI (Seongnam Ilhwa, Korea Republic), Mark SCHWARZER (gk) (Fulham FC, England), Michael THWAITE (Gold Coast United, A-League), Carl VALERI (U.S. Sassuolo Calcio, Italy), Dario VIDOSIC (FC Nurnberg, Germany), Luke WILKSHIRE (FK Dinamo Moscow, Russia).

I dont know much about Gulum, but if he is or will be of international quality, I cant see why he isnt included in a friendly squad to commit him to Australia, as one of teh best things Eddie Thomson ever did was give Kewell an early cap and tie him to Australia, when he could have played for England, wouldnt mind seeing the same happen with Bradden Inman, if Scotland are still sniffing around?

I assume Rhys Williams is still injured?

Socceroos lose Kewell, Kennedy for Egypt
Posted November 16, 2010 15:27:00

Australia has been dealt a double injury blow in the lead-up to its friendly against Egypt in Cairo with star forwards Harry Kewell and Josh Kennedy absent from the travelling squad.

The Socceroos said that Kewell's absence from the side to take on the Pharaohs on Thursday morning (AEDT) was to allow him more time to gain full fitness in his return from injury at Turkish giants Galatasaray.

Meanwhile, Kennedy has a back niggle and it was decided it was not worth risking him flying as his side Nagoya Grampus looks to wrap up the J-League title this month.
