DAVID BECKHAM is OUT of the World Cup after rupturing his Achilles tendon

The England midfielder, 34, was crocked playing for AC Milan in tonight's 1-0 win over Chievo.

An Italian TV reporter said Beckham told the physios "It's broken, it's broken" as he was taken off on a stretcher in tears.

Becks was preparing to kick a ball unchallenged when he frantically signalled to the bench something was wrong.

He will have an operation in Finland tomorrow and faces three to four months of rehabilitation, ruling him out of the summer's showpiece in South Africa.

Milan coach Leonardo said: "Beckham's injury makes us feel terrible.

"He is an extraordinary guy and today's game proves it yet again.

"I cannot enjoy this evening considering this serious injury.

"David understood immediately that he had torn his Achilles tendon."

Beckham was a near certainty to become the first England player to appear in four World Cups.

But Three Lions boss Fabio Capello - who called Beckham after the game - now needs a serious rethink, with Becks' rival for the right midfield berth, Aaron Lennon, also struggling with a groin problem.

And left-back Ashley Cole is in a race against time to make the finals as he recovers from a broken ankle.

Sth Africa couple of respectable losses..to Spain & Brazil
Mexico..some impressive scores all in Sth America and a win in New Zealand.
Uruguay..similar in South America however the win in europe against Switzerland is a very good result...Interesting group to follow.
