Saturday Amateur Division 25 Years Old

Post by Rob Lozza »

Extract from the SAASL web site:

Saturday Amateur Division 25 Years Old
To acknowledge this milestone the League has transferred the fixture Adelaide University v Sturt Marion (two of the original founding members) now to be played at Grange Recreation Reserve (corner Military Road & Trimmer Parade) on Friday 24/7/09 at 7.00pm kick off. Full catering facilities will be available as well as presentations after the game. All welcome.

Teams in the original Metropolitan League were ABANDONED by the then SASF and picked up by the SAASL to form the new Saturday amateur competition. Twenty-five years on and after several changes to its own competition structure, the FFSA is still fart-arsing around with it today and cannot get it right! SAASL pretty much the same management and competition structures over the entire 40-plus years of existance with success!

Does that mean the home side were forced to forgo a home tie or were they given an option?
Better check with redders that they haven't double booked the ground

I think we were told, that's my understanding of it.

Maybe so, but at least we'll put on a good show, hopefully get a decent crowd out to watch, all neutrals should support the uni of course. And I believe there was mention of free dinner for the players afterwards. What are the lights like down at grange?

Couldn't let this pass without some historical images.
From what I can tell the Saturday teams didn't compete in the Cup competion in 1984.
If you look in the Veneto team photo, coached by ex SA State player Nilo Rusalen, there is a young Mark Brazzale, an old Mark Brazzale can still be seen playing for Wanderers at the Veneto Club ground....
One of the names that always caucht my attention in the first 10 years or more of the Saturday Division was Matthew Vario who usually scored quite a few goals and polled well with the referees.
Unfortunately for me I won't be able to make it to the game on Friday night but I hope it is a great night for all celebrating 25 years.

We could have used Robby Baggio in our 1986 Wold cup Qualifying!

Some recognitions that aren't at the beginning of current SAASL Year Books - the first 10 years.

I remember a few of these names, Gary Goddard...I played on the field (under a pseudonym ) for Flinders University's Collegiate league team in 1985 (my girlfriend at the time was playing for Flinders Flashez).
Adey DiBartolo was at Polonia in 1989 when I trained with their reserve side under Joe Larecki.
Also watched a few Saturday games in 1993 particularly CBC v Eastern Suburbs Marche.
