Women’s Football in South Australia has today received a boost with the announcement of Adelaide Airport Ltd partnership with women’s football. The Football Federation SA Women’s Premier Division will be known as the Adelaide Airport Women’s Premier Division for the 2009 season.
“Women’s Football in this state is rapidly growing in stature and we are delighted to announce Adelaide Airport as the major sponsor of the premier women’s competition in Adelaide.” Football Federation SA, CEO Michael Carter said.
The Women’s Premier Division Competition has been revamped in 2009 creating a strong eight team competition that will enable female players in South Australia to further progress in the sport of football. The Adelaide Airport Women’s Premier Division provides a stepping stone into the Westfield W-League. Many future W-League players will have developed their skills in the Adelaide Airport Women’s Premier Division with some going on to represent Australia on the international stage.
AAL General Manager Corporate Affairs, John McArdle, said the company saw an exciting opportunity to sponsor women’s football in South Australia.
“The success of the inaugural national league season has already dramatically lifted the profile of women’s football in this country, and we see the opportunity to sponsor the South Australian league as a wonderful chance to build on that momentum,” Mr McArdle said.
“Participation in the sport is also growing significantly, and we’re excited to be sponsoring a league that is attracting past, present and future national and international players.”
FFSA WOMEN’S PREMIER DIVISION CLUB INFORMATION
Adelaide City WFC
They will again be strong this year and will be hoping to go one step further than 2008 after coming second to Sturt Marion. Players to watch out for are W-League players Sandra Scalzi who recently received the Hat Trick Award at the inaugural Westfield W-League Awards, NSW Jodi Bruce, recently arrived in Adelaide and ex-SASI players Christina Papageorgiou and Rosie Gardiner.

Adelaide Olympic WFC
Although they have lost their coach from last year, Jonathan Ruse, they have recruited ex Fulham United Premier Division coach, Dave Lesan, who guided Fulham United to the Premiership in 2007. Unfortunately the club has lost Junior Matilda player Ashley Faull after becoming a full SASI Scholarship Holder. However they have also recruited some talented young players, Nadia Lesan and Tomai Kezios from Fulham United, Tanya Katianos from Adelaide City and welcome back the return of Rosey Gulino who had been playing in the UK

Another one of the upcoming teams in the Premier Division. Have gained a new coach Robert Drusetta who was the Assistant Under 17 State Team Coach from 2008. Also gained Kiki Celarek, captain of the club, from Adelaide University.

Will again field a very young team, gained the services of a new coach, Robert Samson but have lost Junior Matilda defender, Nicole Calder after becoming a full SASI Scholarship Holder and a number of senior players including the Chilver twins and also Greta French Kennedy. The team now boasts 6 SASI Scholarship Holders.

Will again be coached by 2005 Coach of the Year, Max Primaro. Fulham will also be boosted by the addition of Lilly Rydon, Cassie Tsoumbris, Bianca Morgillo and ex SASI Player Chichi May

Premier Division Cup Winners for 2008, have gained Adelaide United W-League defender Lauren Chilvers to boost their already strong side that also includes Adelaide United players goal keeper Kristi Harvey and winger Donna Cockayne. Also recruited in 2009 ex SASI Players Amy Chilvers and Greta French Kennedy from Cumberland United and also Ebony Weidenbach from Fulham United

Para Hills will be looking to improve on their finishing position in 2008. Another team that boasts a very young premier division team, they will be relying on the experience midfielder Tracey Long and Rita Meijer to get them through what is going to be another tough year for the young team.

Major change for the club is the loss of 2008 Premiership Winning Coach and Coach of the Year, Tracey Jenkins. However they are again expected to be a strong contender with current Adelaide United W-League players Sharon Black, Kristyn Swaffer and Young matildas goalkeeper Sian Mclaren in addition to ex- Matilda Jessica Halfpenny.
