Ronaldo: I'm staying

Post by Le King »

Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed he will remain at Manchester United for another season.

The Portugal winger has been linked with Real Madrid throughout the summer, with the Spanish club maintaining their interest even though United repeatedly stressed Ronaldo would not be sold.

At one point United even reported Real to FIFA such was their annoyance with officials at the Bernabeu.

Ronaldo has hinted at a wish to move but has never publicly confirmed his intentions.

However, in an interview to be published in Portugal on Thursday, while repeating his previously stated desire to play for Real, Ronaldo has also confirmed he will stay with United for another season at least.

'I will remain with Manchester United for at least another year,' Ronaldo told Portuguese newspaper Publico.

He goes on to praise Sir Alex Ferguson, who flew to Portugal just after Euro 2008 for talks with Ronaldo.

Ferguson returned in bullish mood, claiming he had a frank exchange with Ronaldo, who would be staying at United.

While his stance was viewed as posturing in a battle that would be waged until the transfer window finally closed on August 31, the feeling in Manchester has been growing that Ronaldo has agreed to remain.

That belief was reinforced by Real's surprise announcement yesterday that the arrival of Rafael van der Vaart from Hamburg would represent their only major purchase of the summer.

Now Ronaldo has given United fans the news they were all hoping for.

After scoring 42 goals last season as the Red Devils won the Premier League and Champions League double, Ronaldo is widely expected to be confirmed world footballer of the year in December.

His presence at Old Trafford is huge, even if he will be missing until the end of next month following ankle surgery.

Ferguson was always confident he would win the battle to keep Ronaldo but the news still represents a major coup for the Scot, who lost trusted assistant Carlos Queiroz, a close friend of the 23-year-old, to the Portugal national job last month.

Ronaldo said: 'Sir Alex Ferguson heard my arguments, I heard his and, in fact, it was settled that the best for both parties would be for me to stay.

'Therefore, I can confirm that, next season, I will play for Manchester United.

'Before rumours emerge saying that I will play against my will, I want to make this clear - whoever says or writes that is lying.

'I will play for Manchester with all my heart and soul. I will fight and honour that shirt with the same commitment and dedication as always.'

Ronaldo has also taken the blame for the transfer saga, which lasted for several months and damaged United's relationship with Real.

He continued: 'I was responsible for all this controversy.

'I was the one who publicly expressed my desire to go to Real Madrid. I ended up being, even involuntarily, responsible for the poor relationship between the two clubs.'

But he repeated that his dream of playing for Real remains and has not closed the door on a future move to the Spanish giants.

He explained: 'I knew Real Madrid were interested in signing me and that they had allegedly made a very high offer to Manchester United.

'My desire was, for some time, that Manchester had accepted my transfer to Madrid.

'Saying otherwise would be to trick people and my own consciousness.'

Most Man.U fans will get back on him, just like Arse fans will get back on Adebayor, they have enough plastic fans to cover for the real fans. Unlike someone like Barry, who is fooked if he doesn't go to Pool, he will never be cheered or sung to anywhere near what he was last season or the season before,Villa fans hate him.

........don't know if anyone actually cares now do they?

ManUre fans will say it's great to keep him whereas if other clubs had a player like that causing so much aggravation they would have got rid of him or hopefully leave him to rot on the bench but Fergie makes up his own rules as he goes along to suit himself - witness him slating Real for tapping him up and yet they do the same to Berbatov. Not sure if it is the same! ManUtd actually put in an offer of 20m squid where as Real only suggested thru Marca and AS papers they were interested. No offer just speculation to unsettle Ronaldo, which worked.

What can I say, I feel a little betrayed that after all the speculation he caused he's not coming but we don't need him, he would've just been an extra leep in quality but we have good loyal players at our club, I just hope he never tries to move to Real Madrid again because if he does, I'll honestly never be able to look at the club the same way. I really don't understand where Manchester United's logic is, he didn't want to play for your club anymore, he still doesn't. The fans must be so angry it's not funny, the players must be angry with him, all I can see is this being bad for the team but I suppose if Fergie managed to fix the issue when Ronaldo got Rooney sent off then maybe he can fix this one as well. I repeat, I just hope to sweet Jesus Christ in heaven that he never comes because I will not support any team with him in it. All he had to do was say, "I'm staying in Manchester" 2 months ago, all he's shown is that he has no class and the Bernabeu doesn't have room for players with no class.

Surely even Villa must understand that Barry has bigger ambitions than what they can offer him. I can really think of only 1 truly world class 1 team player that played for a great team, but 1 that for me never looked likely to challenge for tonnes of silverware, Francesco Totti, for me is one of the true greats, Raul is a great leader, but he played at Real Madrid where all his ambitions could be fulfilled, Maldini is much in the same boat, Totti, however, he must've known when Real Madrid came knocking in 2003 that it was his last real chance to challenge for trophies on a larger scale and still he said no. A class act.

That makes me think otherwise but hey, as far as i'm concerned he's no longer welcome at the Bernabeu, so I hope he stays at *the second best club in Manchester* :P and finishes his career there.

Ronaldo sticks with United

Cristiano Ronaldo has admitted that he will remain at Manchester United for another season.

In the longest running transfer saga of the summer, the Red Devils winger had fluctuated between his desire to remain at Old Trafford and fulfilling his dream of playing for Real Madird.

United had always insisted that the Portugal international was not for sale, but Real have a history of getting what they want.

However, the 23-year-old appears to have brought an end to the endless speculation surrounding his future by stating his intentions to remain in England for the 2008/09 campaign.

"I will remain with Manchester United for at least another year," Ronaldo told Portuguese newspaper Publico.
Dedication

He goes on to praise United boss Sir Alex Ferguson, who flew to Portugal in the aftermath of Euro 2008 to hold clear-the-air discussions with his enigmatic playmaker.

"Sir Alex Ferguson heard my arguments, I heard his and, in fact, it was settled that the best for both parties would be for me to stay," he added.

"Therefore, I can confirm that, next season, I will play for Manchester United.

"Before rumours emerge saying that I will play against my will, I want to make this clear - whoever says or writes that is lying.

"I will play for Manchester with all my heart and soul. I will fight and honour that shirt with the same commitment and dedication as always."

Controversy

Ronaldo also accepted full responsibility for failing to stop the constant rumours from spiralling out of control.

"I was responsible for all this controversy," he said.

"I was the one who publicly expressed my desire to go to Real Madrid. I ended up being, even involuntarily, responsible for the poor relationship between the two clubs."

Desire

While United will be pleased to here their prized asset committing himself to the club, Ronaldo went on to admit that he maintains his dream of playing for Real at some stage in the future.

He explained: "I knew Real Madrid were interested in signing me and that they had allegedly made a very high offer to Manchester United.

"My desire was, for some time, that Manchester had accepted my transfer to Madrid.

"Saying otherwise would be to trick people and my own consciousness."

Positive

In the wake of the news that Ronaldo will be staying under his tuition next season, Ferguson was understandably in upbeat mood.

"It's very positive and we welcome him back here this week," the United boss told MUTV.

"He's always been happy here. He's always been treated properly. I have a great relationship with the boy and I think what we have to do is put this situation to bed."

tbh, i was fed up with all these malarky about Ronaldo comin back or goin.
Calderon just added extra fuel to the fire and Sir Alex as usual has used his persuassion to get the best result for United snd his team.

I honestly thought Ronaldo was goin, but he committed for another year. Will he be as BEST as last year??? One can only watch an wait. Personally, I think Ronaldo will not be, he will play more just as a squad player and ask for a transfer next year to Madrid. I really thought he should of been sold and another 2/3 players brought in.

I hope he is atleast 80% as good as last year!

I have lost some respect for Ronaldo for the circus act he has brought surrounding his transfer, but bein an UNITED player, I will still watch him and cheer him. But tbh, I have LOST respect for the GUY!

But in world football, its quite RARE u see a player beig LOYAL to his club.
Remember, MONEY Talks and bullllls.hit walks!

Hope he stays there his whole career, he doesn't deserve to play for Real Madrid. Van Nistelrooy and Beckham were hardly past it as well, Van Nistelrooy became top goalscorer in his first season in La Liga...and would've been European top goalscorer but for an injury in the last game and Totti beating him by a goal. Beckham played some of his best football at Real Madrid, he didn't win many trophies but his performances particularly in his first, second and and fourth seasons were very good.

Fergie To Fans: Don't Be Hard On Ronaldo
Now that the summer's most sensational and exhaustive transfer tug-of-war has been settled in favour of Manchester United, Sir Alex Ferguson has shifted his emphasis to rebuilding Cristiano Ronaldo's damaged reputation amongst the club's fans.

The Portuguese phenomenon alienated his own supporters through his blatant flirtation with Real Madrid before ultimately deciding to stay loyal to United - or some would say, postpone his move to Spain.

In his latest statements, Ferguson was extra keen to justify Ronaldo's actions for him, even going as far as saying that the early loss of his father clouded his decision making.

"The fans have to understand it has been a very difficult time for him," Sir Alex was quoted as saying in The Telegraph.

"He has been offered all this money - when his dad has died a young man and he is looking after his mother, his sister and his brother.

"He has had a troubled time, and you can understand that.

"But once he knew my stance, he settled down - and as far as we are all concerned, the matter is finished. The boy is a United player - that is what is important.

"We cleared the air in Portugal, and the boy spoke to a few of the players as well," the Scot added.

"The thing is, he knows he is happy here - and has always been happy here."

LOL, Heinze and Beckham rejected Man Utd. Wasn't it Heinze that wanted to move to Liverpool, and Beckham...well after he got a shoe thrown at him I'm not at all surprised that he wanted to move. Your homegrown boy, one of the biggest names in your clubs history...CHOSE us over Manchester United. A little respect to the World Greatest Club ay. "Real Madrid Best Club of the XX Century" ....don't see Manchester United's name there.....or on 9 Champions League trophies....or for that matter 31 league titles

Real Madrid >>>>>>Man Utd. No comparison really. 10 good years does not compare to Real's dominance over the years.
