I am just debating the absurd fact that he would prefer finishing lower in the league if it meant a Carling Cup triumph. Do you agree with that? I certainly don't, and I am allowed to debate him on that fact. Isn't that the point of a forum?

As its an Aussie only game, there is no champions league to play for, so why do people bang on about making the finals each year? Surely missing the finals but winning a flag every so often is far more important.

Two different things. The league, being over 38 games and 10 months is the benchmark for how well the team is performing, there can be no argument about that.

However, from a large proportion of fans' persepctive, it would be a more enjoyable and exciting season to win two cups and finish mid table than to win stuff all and finish third.

They have improved but had less success.

If you have shares in QANTAS and one year they are worth $2 and you get no dividend, and then 12 months later they are worth $1 but you get a dividend has your investment improved or not?

How can you improve but have less success? Does not compute.

On your example, obviously the share market is a complex beast but put simply you would rather your investment be worth more than recieve a dividend. Applying that exmaple to Liverpool's success (or lack thereof) only backs up my point.

It's like Liverpool dropped 20 points on the share market, but you are saying it's ok because they paid out a dividend.

Sometimes teams have good cup years. If I was a Liverpool fan I'd be concerned how far behind the top teams they are now. And every year they don't play in the Champions League is another year they fall behind the European big guns in terms of players gaining top european experience.

On the other hand I agree that winning trophies is what it all comes down to and maybe this will be the spring board for Liverpool moving on up next year! Next season is make or break for King Kenny and his expensive signings. Will be interesting to see Nicky Tanner and The Kop are still reckoning they have improved if they're languishing in 10th in the league and in the semis of a cup in April!

Positions on table can be deceiving too sometimes. Teams can finish higher on the ladder but with less points (or vice-versa) than previous season. Has this team therefore improved, or not?

So how does that norm out and equalise to judge a season?

Maybe the carling cup is worth 1 league position and the FA Cup 2?
UEFA 3 and UCL 4?

Chelsea finish may well finish 5th or even 6th, but getting to an UCL and FA Cup final maybe puts their season on par with say Man City who will have just the 2nd place to show and no deep cup runs to show for their season?

Either way there is a big trend on here. Liverpool win, topics bumped complex rolls on. Liverpool lose, FN goes into meltdown wankfest, complex rolls on.

I mean we not just talking about money from finishing higher in EPL, you factor in 20 years of CL football revenue, to 20 years of Europa League revenue etc etc. Massive amounts of money that could be used to improve your squad as well as the lure of CL for players. All for one Carling Cup.

Essentially what your saying is, you like following a mid-table cup side over following a powerhouse team in Europe? No wonder Liverpool fans are so easy to ridicule.

I am pretty if it wasn't for Leeds making UCL, they probably would not exist. They over-spent when they thought it was a given they would qualify for the competition, then they didn't... blaming them playing in the UCL is ridiculous.
