Emphasis was placed on word "YOU" as in Nicky Tanner. No-one is denying your right to debate, but seriously, if I prefer supreme pizzas to ham and pineapple, isnt that my choice? Same thing here.LFTWNG11 wrote:Who is telling him what he should prefer?!Bomber wrote:I know. I am just debating the absurd fact that he would prefer finishing lower in the league if it meant a Carling Cup triumph. Do you agree with that? I certainly don't, and I am allowed to debate him on that fact. Isn't that the point of a forum?
Some AFL people seem to think coming top 4 in AFL is a successful season. I dont - there is only one winner. As its an Aussie only game, there is no champions league to play for, so why do people bang on about making the finals each year? Surely missing the finals but winning a flag every so often is far more important.

Fair enough, but the debate is on whether Liverpool has improved or not. Nicky obviously thinks finishes 17th and winning a Carling Cup is a better season than finishing 2nd, but no cups.Bomber wrote:Emphasis was placed on word "YOU" as in Nicky Tanner. No one has answered me this... If Liverpool finish 8th but with a Cup double this season, then next season finish 4th but with no Cups... have Liverpool improved or not?

Re: Liverpool 2011/12
Two different things. The league, being over 38 games and 10 months is the benchmark for how well the team is performing, there can be no argument about that.LFTWNG11 wrote:Fair enough, but the debate is on whether Liverpool has improved or not. However, from a large proportion of fans' persepctive, it would be a more enjoyable and exciting season to win two cups and finish mid table than to win stuff all and finish third.

If you have shares in QANTAS and one year they are worth $2 and you get no dividend, and then 12 months later they are worth $1 but you get a dividend has your investment improved or not?
Re: Liverpool 2011/12
How can you improve but have less success? Does not compute.NickyTanner wrote: They have improved but had less success.

On your example, obviously the share market is a complex beast but put simply you would rather your investment be worth more than recieve a dividend. Applying that exmaple to Liverpool's success (or lack thereof) only backs up my point.
It's like Liverpool dropped 20 points on the share market, but you are saying it's ok because they paid out a dividend.

OK then
If Liverpool had 20 2nd places and no trophiesi n 20 years and 1 league cup and 20 5th places in 20 years. Which is better?
I would have the first.
Each and every year I want trophies first and foremost.
I am still waiting for an honours list to have 3rd/4th as something to put up!!

Re: Liverpool 2011/12
Exactly. Does nobody else on this forum not think that the cup success this year for Liverpool is papering over the cracks somewhat? Portsmouth won the cup the other year, Millwall reached a final! Sometimes teams have good cup years. If I was a Liverpool fan I'd be concerned how far behind the top teams they are now. And every year they don't play in the Champions League is another year they fall behind the European big guns in terms of players gaining top european experience.LFTWNG11 wrote:Fair enough, but the debate is on whether Liverpool has improved or not. On the other hand I agree that winning trophies is what it all comes down to and maybe this will be the spring board for Liverpool moving on up next year! Next season is make or break for King Kenny and his expensive signings. Will be interesting to see Nicky Tanner and The Kop are still reckoning they have improved if they're languishing in 10th in the league and in the semis of a cup in April!

Positions on table can be deceiving too sometimes. Teams can finish higher on the ladder but with less points (or vice-versa) than previous season. Has this team therefore improved, or not?

Re: Liverpool 2011/12
In the same going deep in cup competitions should have an adverse effect on league position, no?
So how does that norm out and equalise to judge a season?
Maybe the carling cup is worth 1 league position and the FA Cup 2?
UEFA 3 and UCL 4?
Chelsea finish may well finish 5th or even 6th, but getting to an UCL and FA Cup final maybe puts their season on par with say Man City who will have just the 2nd place to show and no deep cup runs to show for their season?
Either way there is a big trend on here. Liverpool win, topics bumped complex rolls on. Liverpool lose, FN goes into meltdown wankfest, complex rolls on.

Do you know how much money 20 years in 2nd place would reel in as opposed 20 years in 5th? I mean we not just talking about money from finishing higher in EPL, you factor in 20 years of CL football revenue, to 20 years of Europa League revenue etc etc. Massive amounts of money that could be used to improve your squad as well as the lure of CL for players. All for one Carling Cup.

Essentially what your saying is, you like following a mid-table cup side over following a powerhouse team in Europe? No wonder Liverpool fans are so easy to ridicule.

Add this to the calendar guys, ITS QUITE RARE THAT I AGREE with lefty - but Nicky, seriously give it up.
Liverpool supporters, King Kenny and the club would hand back the carling cup to finish 4th this year and play in CL next year.
the amount of $$$$$$$$ u get from playing in the comp is far more than a carling cup win!
