ISC Raptors ( 1 ) Southern Knights ( 4 ) ...with pics

Post by swannsong »

ISC Raptors ( 1 ) Southern Knights ( 4 )
.............................. Matt Harrison
.............................. Scott Bradley
.............................. Paul Thompson 2

A huge sense of relief for Southern Knights today as they came from be 1-0 down to winning 1-4 and retained their foothold in SAASL Sunday Dvision 2 for 2012.
Coach Ben Smith, still buoyed up from playing in South Adelaide Panthers 1-2 win over Salisbury on Saturday night, managed to extract plenty of effort from a yet again depleted Southern Knights side....minus Glen Crute, Bradley Armour, Alex Field and Ben Vidgeon.
Knights got off to a nervous start and found themselves 1-0 down after Raptors were able to break through a flat Knights defence and slot the ball home. Steve Maguire in Knights goal subsequently denied Raptors from stretching their lead several times with excellent saves.
At the other end, Nathan Bassett in goal for Raptors looked strong in the air and he too deinied Knights a much needed equaliser on several occasions.
However, Knights eventually equalised a minute befor half time when Matt Harrison pounced on the ball from a corner and slotted home a very important goal the Club.
After the break Knights looked a totally different side and pressured Raptors...however, it wasn't until substitute Paul Thompson entered the fray that Knights were able to go to a 1-2 lead.
Knights went further ahead when Scott Bradley superbly volleyed from ~30 metres on the corner of the box giving Bassett no chance despite a feint touch off his glove.
The final nail in Raptors coffin came when Paul Thompson pounced for his second goal of the game ( and 4th for the day).
Best for Knights today were Steve Maguire, Matt Harrison, Mick Paay, Paul Martin, David Mooney, Ben Jones, Chris Bradley, Lee White, Scott Bradley, Andre Rickers, Lyndon Parry and Paul Thompson and Coach Ben Smith :D

Commiserations to Raptors, who I think have the depth and club strength to quickly bounce back from this setback...and also to the lads at Vikings who have taken 2 hits in two seasons.
Congratulations to SAASL Sunday Division 2 Champions Modbury Vista and runners up Salisbury Inter...best of luck for 2012.

My final Southern Knights picture report for 2011...it's been a tough year for the Club...hopefully the Knights will regroup and come out more determined in 2012....off to grab some images from the semi-finals next Sunday.

My apologies for the photo overkill....but in perspective, it was a good day :D

Mick Paay looks on as Matt Harrison starts confidently for Knights in the air.

More aerial assertion from Matt Harrison as Lyndon Parry, Ben Jones, Scott Bradley and Raptors look on.

Nathan Bassett, in a familiar position behind the pack, prepares as David Mooney lurks close.

Southern Knights go behind the 8-ball as Raptors take an early 1-0 lead...Lee White discusses the off-side rule with Raptors no.23.

Raptors press forward for a second goal....

Lee White can't look as Raptors menace the Knights goal during a succession of corners.

Nathan Bassett dominated the Raptors goal mouth early in the game.

David Mooney deflects the ball goalwards as Matt Harrison prepares to pounce and level the game at 1-1 minutes before half time.

Sheer joy for Matt Harrison and Knights........ but it is back to defending after the break.

Knights keeper Steve Maguire and Mick Paay look on as Paul Martin clears the lines.

Ben Matthews almost puts Raptors ahead about 10 minutes into the second half.

Image Image
Substitute Paul Thompson has a profound impact as he puts Southern Knights 1-2 in front.

Image
Disbelief and a game defining moment as Raptors rue a missed opportunity to level the game again moments later.

Image
Scott Bradley's own game defining moments as he volleys home from 30+ metres to give Knights a 1-3 lead.
A brilliant strike that probably surpassed his long range effort against Adelaide Vikings earlier in the season.

Paul Thompson is all smiles as he stretches Knights lead to 1-4 with his second goal of the game ( and 4th. for the day).

Reserves
ISC Raptors ( 5 ) Southern Knights ( 2 )
.............................. Paul Thompson 2

Paul Thompson scored a double to take his Reserve League tally to 18 (I think...should be 19, but apparently a goal earlier in the year was awarde to a wrong Knights player.) as Knights came back from a 3-1 deficit to 3-2. Unfortunately Raptors pulled away and took the game 5-2 in the finish.

The Whistleblower ends the encounter....5-2 to ISC Raptors...

A quick drink at Raptors then off to the Marion Hotel who kindly sponsored the Southern Knights in 2010 and again in 2012....hopefully that relationship will continue in 2012 :)

Big thankyou for the Marion Hotel for putting on a barbeque and a few beers forr the Knights....the beer tasted so much better this week :D

That is probably the centre circle  Maybe 40+ metres might have been more apt !

Haha great photo, thanks Swanny. Thanks for letting all my facebook friends see what I look like when I ref :P

Knights Reserves (bar one incident) were generally well behaved, easily the easiest game I've had to ref out at Trinity Gardens.

The bloke above has it right, i was closest to that shot (about 5m away on the line) after the three defenders and the volley was just inside the box. The raptors left back didn't mark up from a long ball and the knights forward slipped in behind him and hit it first time into the bottom right corner, Basset got a hand to it but couldn't keep it out, was hit too powerfully. Superb technique!

Even if it was just inside the apex of the of the box and is volleyed into the opposite corner of the goal it can still be very close to 30 metres (I wasn't very good at trigonometry).....don't destroy the myth....in 10 years time it will be 50 metres...
25metres from far goalpost to the side of the box 16.5 metres out....X = ?

It certainly did. Good game, good company. I'd already watched Metros vs ABE on Saturday and Campbelltown vs ABE U17s on Sunday morning so it was good to get another perspective on the local football scene.

Some good banter (Surely Knight15 could make a living out of it) and some great goals.

With MSSC Blue Eagles gaining promotion to Div 2, I'll probably be going to a few more amateur games next year and look forward to the Knights visit to Marden.

Anyone want to buy a Knights 2011 - 'Going Down' T-shirt?

I am sure the boys will respond well next season, starting with some of us older & wiser crew starting our bike rides in the coming weeks. Especially those of us that chose to play heavy every week this season :)

Can anyone demonstrate how it is mathematically possible for the ball to travel ~30 metres from just inside the box......I think it must be close ?

From where i was standing Scott appeared to hit it on the edge of the 18 yard box but definately on an angle. When Basset got his hand to it, I thought he'd initally managed to save it or it had hit the side netting.

Either way, given the trajectory and pace at which the initial cross was hit, it was one of those 'special goals'.

Well, the goal is 7.32m wide, the 18 yard box is 16.5m wide. So from the back post the edge of the 18 yard box on the touchline is 23.82m.

The distance from that point to the edge of the 18 yard box is 16.5m.

So using pythagoras's theory on right handed triangles we can define that, the edge of the 18 yard box is at most = 28.98m.

However if you add in trajectory of the ball (bend and dip) and the fact that this is a ground level calculation and the the top corner of the goal is 2.44m high.

Then we can conclude it is easily possible to hit a 30 yard volley from inside the box.

Well ground to ground is 28.98m. So as long as the ball wasn't more than 1.44m off the ground, then 30m is eacily achievable.
