AN INVESTIGATION has been launched into crowd behaviour at a soccer match involving Ferryden Park club Pontian, following allegations a spectator threatened to “bash” the referee.
The referee called off the away game at Ingle Farm midway through the second half on Sunday, August 28, after allegedly receiving abuse from sections of Pontian supporters.
The incident followed the referee’s decision to send off Pontian’s goalkeeper for handling the ball outside the box.
One eyewitness told the Weekly Times Messenger a Pontian fan shouted to the referee: “Decisions like that get refs bashed and you’ll get yours at the end of the game.”
The incident - the second involving threats or violence towards referees at SA Amateur Soccer League matches this season - is being investigated by the league.
SA Amateur Soccer Referee Association president Andrew Leetham declined to comment on the specifics of the latest incident.
However, he was concerned by the risks to referees and called on the league to review umpire safety.
“It’s a concern that there have been more of these incidents happening than there have been in recent years, and I think we need to sit down with the amateur league, and the clubs, and identify what we need to do to ensure umpire safety,” Mr Leetham said.
“The referee involved was an experienced referee and wouldn’t have taken the action he did if he didn’t feel it was warranted.
“As a general rule, none of our members are expected to be placed in a position where they feel at risk.”
Pontian coach George Kargiotis declined to comment.
Ingle Farm coach Paul Simpson said his club’s spectators were not involved in the incident and he supported the referee’s decision to abandon the match, with scores tied at 1-1.

Re: Ref cancels match after bash threats
I see the amateur league has posted on their site the Farm vs Pontians game was a 1-1 draw.
From all accounts I have read on this site how on earth did they come to that conclusion?
Shame on you amateur league. After last week’s events, a club supporter then verbally threatens to bash a ref and you don't punish the club for it. And tonight you Premier Division is plastered all over Adelaide Now for all of Australia to see. Clearly your write up on your website last week are just words on a page in which the league itself will not act upon. Gutless, Cowardly and absolutely disgusting are just a few words that come to mind.
If this is the case, Bill, Alex and crew, you all need to have a hard look at yourselves. If you are prepared to stand back and be bystanders instead of acting, maybe it is time for a change in guard down th eleague who will not condone this type of behaviour.
If I was Ingle Farm I will be making a please explain call to the league because this is a joke.

To be fair, the club can't possibly know in advance what some pillock is going to shout at a game, all they can do is react to it after it's been said. It wasn't the players' or the coach's fault.Ollo Ollo wrote:I see the amateur league has posted on their site the Farm vs Pontians game was a 1-1 draw.

Re: Ref cancels match after bash threats
seriously this is getting out of hand. Whos the mug that said that crap to the messenger. "we will bash them after the game". Its a lot of crap I can tell you that. Yelling out to the ref and threatening to bash people are 2 different things. Calling the ref a F wit and stuff like that is not threatening to bash him. He should take more time in learning how to ref the game consistantly for both sides than to listening to people slag him on the sideline.

not saying that mate just trying to get the point across that I feel the better refs tend to be more consistant with their decisions to both sides. This adds to a better game and all involved are lot happier. Steve is the only ref to come to the sidelines on three different occasions this year to talk to our supporters threatening to get people removed. He should just shut up and let the game play out. Some of the refs we have had this year have been great, they tend to concentrate on the game

Can't believe Pontian and Handyman are still blaming the referee. It's this sort of attitude that perpetuates this rubbish. Cop it sweet, tell us you know who the culprit is and have banned him from this weeks game, & post an apology from your president. Do that and it all goes away. Control your spectators like you're supposed to when the ref asks & this would never have happened!

We all know some refs are better than others but, if things carry on the way they're going, refs will just refuse to officiate at certain clubs. Then where will we all be? They're a necessary evil and clubs need to understand that, and take a firmer approach to those supporters who are are bit too boisterous rather than backing them up because they're mates or whatever. Surely a quiet word from the Prez or someone would suffice in most cases.

the ref obviously felt threatened, and do you blame him with recent incidents in the league, pontians dropped the ball big time on this one

I understand where your coming from mate. maybe some words to a few supporters will be said this week. Just trying to get the message across that no one in our group was threatening to bash the ref, Our club is making the right changes on the pitches and off. we are not happy with people making up stuff. If they think they heard something then speak up and point them out or what they looked like.

Hearsay. Could get into trouble for doing so. I Don't recall a game where a ref doesn't cop abuse from the sidelines. Especially club refs! I Remember the Parafield crowd going feral at our ref (who is a former league ref which i think we pay to officiate)! As a ref at any level you should learn to deal with it. In every sport in every country, referees get abused in some way. Not saying it should be accepted, but it always has and always will happen! Watch a game of AFL and yr almost guaranteed to see the cameras cut to supporters going off at an umpire. But the game goes on because unlike our mate Steve, they deal with it. Sticks and stones Stevie boy.... Sticks and stones mate!

Steves Junk enough said about that. If he was threatened in any way by someone. Take the matter further with the police against the person not the club playing a game. I was on the pitch and didnt hear a threat at all. I did hear colourful language about his reffing capabilities. but after the first 23minutes I no why.
