Sydney to host World Cup qualifier in Oct
16:16 AEST Sun Aug 7 2011
Sydney will host the Socceroos' fifth World Cup qualifying match against Oman on October 11.
Character's death revealed Sydney will host the Socceroos' fifth World Cup qualifying match against Oman on October 11.
Football Federation Australia (FFA) announced the Sydney match, at a yet to be revealed venue, as part of a deal with the NSW government.
Under the agreement, the Socceroos will also play two World Cup Asian round four qualifiers in NSW if they advance from round three as expected.
The draw for the Asian qualifiers was made in Rio de Janeiro last month with the Socceroos placed in Group D alongside Saudi Arabia, Oman and Thailand. The top two teams progress.
The FFA deal with NSW includes two matches from the London 2012 Olympic Games Asian qualifiers, with regional centres to be considered to host the Group B matches against Uzbekistan on November 27 and Iraq on March 14.
"We have a challenging but achievable road to Brazil, and we are delighted football fans in NSW and in particular Sydney will get the opportunity to see the Socceroos play against Oman on October 11," Football Federation Australia CEO Ben Buckley told reporters in Sydney on Sunday.
NSW Premier Barry O'Farrell said the events would bring economic activity to Sydney and NSW.
"It creates jobs but, importantly, this announcement today will ensure football followers, whether in Sydney, interstate or internationally, will know that Sydney is the home of football in NSW," he said
