Stars in video bid for soccer World Cup

Post by the_gun »

IAN Thorpe, Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman are among movie and sport stars being called on to create a secret weapon to win the World Cup soccer bid.

Soccer chief Frank Lowy - one of Australia's richest men - has asked for their help to make a 30-minute video showcasing the best of Australia.

The film, being shot at Bondi Beach and other landmarks, will be shown to the 24 members of FIFA's executive committee when bidders for 2018 and 2022 make their final presentations in Zurich in December.

Salt and Clear and Present Danger director Phillip Noyce took his crew of 60 to Bondi yesterday after filming scenes at the Harbour Bridge.

Thorpe was up at 5am for the shoot, in which the swimming legend dressed as a lifeguard for a mock rescue.

The producers are believed to be negotiating with Kidman and fellow star Hugh Jackman to play roles in the short film. Track queen Kathy Freeman has also been sounded out to play a role.

Noyce, who has directed films including Salt, Rabbit Proof Fence and Dead Calm, looked relaxed despite being under a tight deadline to deliver the film.

Lowy was reluctant to comment on the film, which is being kept under tight wraps as the competition between bidders heats up.

But the shopping centre mogul said hosting the tournament would have a huge impact on Australia.

"A World Cup here would be a nation-building event, nothing less. It would position Australia at the centre of the world for more than a month, and in truth for years beforehand," he said.

"It is a big enough event to make a significant impact on a country's economy.

"Of course it would be good for football, we don't hide from that, but it would be a huge thing for the country as a whole.

"It would be a safe, comfortable choice - we know we can put on amazing sporting events. There are no holes in our bid. We can guarantee everything.

"We just hope that FIFA see it that way in December."

As that deadline looms, Noyce is working around the clock to create the magic that could give Australia the edge.
