Mullen chosen in Qantas Olyroos squad

Post by TOPGUNJIMMYAUFC »

Monday, 13 September 2010

Daniel Mullen.
© AUFC Adelaide United defender Daniel Mullen will be reacquainted with a familiar face, after being named in the Qantas Olyroos (U-23) squad for a Four Nations Tournament in Vietnam next week.

Mullen is part of a 20-player squad announced by Qantas Olyroos Head Coach and former Reds boss Aurelio Vidmar.

It is the first time Vidmar will get to work with an Under 23 squad since he took on the job in June, with Mullen right in the mix after playing in all of the Reds’ Hyundai A-League matches so far this season, while he was also a member of the Qantas Young Socceroos squad that competed at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Egypt last year.

As well as representing Australia at Under 20 level, the 20 year old defender also has one Qantas Socceroos appearance to his name, which came against Kuwait in March, 2009.

Mullen, who was named the U-20 Footballer of the Year at last year’s Australian Football Awards, will assemble in Sydney with the rest of the squad on Wednesday 15 September for a two day training camp, before they depart for Vietnam on Friday.

This means Mullen will be unavailable for the Reds’ next two games, away against Brisbane Roar and at home to Perth Glory.

On the eve of his first training camp with his new group of players, Vidmar is excited about the upcoming campaign to qualify for the 2012 London Olympic Games.

“This is our first opportunity to get this particular group of players together,” Vidmar said.

“There is still a long way to go before our first official qualifier next June, but camps like these are an important part of the preparation process.”

“The majority of the squad that will take us through the qualifiers will be Hyundai A-League based players, so we will need to work hard to ensure that the squad is the strongest one possible for the campaign.”

Adelaide United's Mathew Leckie was one curious omission, for the 19-year-old forward has arguably shown far more this season than many who were selected.

But his absence can be explained by eligibility to play for the Australian under-20 squad in their concurrent Asian qualification campaign.

There is little doubt that Leckie will be under Olyroos consideration should the team qualify for the London 2012 Olympics.

The Leckie situation has been explained by many people in several threads, he is part of the U/20 team already involved, nothing to do with Vidmar etc , when will people get a life and get their head's out of their asses....

ps Jimmy in regards to your Signature line, the only thing that is articulated in your world is your truck and trailer .... (lol)
