HOLGER Osieck will usher in the most important era of Australian football when he makes his bench debut for the Socceroos in St Gallen tomorrow morning.

In 90 days, FIFA will make a decision which could make or break Australian football when it announces the successful hosting nations for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.

Osieck was appointed to bring the Socceroos 2014 World Cup qualification and a trophy at January's Asian Cup in Qatar.

While Swiss-based Osieck is expected to rejuvenate the ageing side which went to South Africa, he also could be the secret weapon in Football Federation Australia's push for World Cup hosting rights.

The powerful 24-man FIFA executive committee, which includes Osieck's buddy - German legend Franz Beckenbauer - will announce its host decision on December 4.

Osieck was Beckenbauer's "assistant" when West Germany claimed its third World Cup after beating Argentina 1-0 in Rome's Olympic Stadium in 1990.

In fact, Osieck was the official West German World Cup manager at the 1990 tournament, because "Der Kaiser" did not have the official FIFA coaching badge. Osieck's first Socceroos side which faces Switzerland, however, has already been rocked by Harry Kewell's groin injury.

Kewell's misfortune presented former Adelaide United player Nathan Burns with the perfect opportunity to impress Osieck in the Socceroos' final training session last night.

The AEK Athens attacking midfielder's chances of starting could also be bolstered by some words of encouragement from his former boss, former Reds coach and current Socceroos assistant Aurelio Vidmar.

Burns, however, does have some healthy competition, including from world-class marksman Tim Cahill and Scott McDonald, yet to score for the Socceroos in 16 appearances.

AUSTRALIAN SQUAD

Nathan Burns, Tim Cahill, David Carney, Jason Culina, Brett Emerton, Adam Federici, Richard Garcia, Brett Holman, Mile Jedinak, Scott McDonald, Lucas Neill, Jade North, Mark Schwarzer, Matthew Spiranovic, Carl Valeri, Dario Vidosic, Luke Wilkshire, Tommy Oar, Jon McKain.

Friendly international tomorrow: Switzerland v Australia at AFG Arena, St Gallen, Switzerland. Kick off: 3.45am. TV: Fox Sports 2

Just saw the recording of game. Not bad for a 0-0! Some incredible misses by both teams.

Exactly right. McDonald's poor finishing may cost him in the very near future. Needs a good/great game midweek for me...
