Arsenal player Jack Wilshere arrested after 'fracas'
Jack Wilshere Wilshere made his England debut in last month's friendly against Hungary

Arsenal and England midfielder Jack Wilshere was arrested in the early hours in connection with a "fracas".

A spokesman for the player said the footballer was held after the incident at 0245 BST in Kensington High Street, London, and later released on bail. Three other men were also arrested.

Emergency crews were called after a man suffered minor facial injuries and a woman sustained a broken arm.

Wilshere, 18, made his England debut in last month's friendly against Hungary.

But this week he was named in the England under-21 squad rather than remaining in contention for the senior side's Euro 2012 qualifiers against Bulgaria and Switzerland.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said the four men - two aged 18 and two aged 21 - were taken to a west London police station and later bailed to return in mid-October pending further inquiries.

The spokesman said: "Jack Wilshere was arrested by police in the early hours following a fracas but was released on bail later.

"The police have made it very clear that he is an important witness to the incident and played the role of peacemaker and is unlikely to face any charges as a result.

"Jack has made it very clear he will co-operate fully with the police investigation."

Stevenage-born Wilshere came on as a substitute for Arsenal in the 84th minute on Saturday in his team's 2-1 win over Blackburn.

He has played in all three of Arsenal's Premier League matches so far this season, after spending much of last season on loan at Bolton, and is rated as one of the best young English prospects in the game.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "Police were called at approximately 2.45am on Sunday 29 August following reports of an assault on Kensington High Street.

"Officers and London Ambulance Service attended and discovered a man and a woman suffering injuries.

"The woman had suffered a broken and dislocated elbow; the man was treated for a minor facial injury. Both went to a west London hospital for treatment."

Arsenal striker Robin van Persie out until mid-October

Arsenal striker Robin van Persie will be sidelined with an ankle injury until at least mid-October.

The Dutchman, 27, suffered the injury during Arsenal's 2-1 win over Blackburn in the Premier League on 28 August.

The Netherlands Football Association had forecast he would be out for "at least a few weeks", however, the problem is worse than first feared.

Van Persie missed five months last season after damaging ankle ligaments while on international duty.

His latest injury rules him out of Arsenal's first two Champions League group stage matches, at home to Braga on 15 September and away to Partizan Belgrade 13 days later.

It seems likely he will miss a minimum of five Premier League matches, including the north London derby at Tottenham on 21 September and away to leaders Chelsea on 3 October.

The Dutch, meanwhile, will have to do without him for their Euro 2012 qualifiers against Moldova and Sweden next month, with Hamburg's Ruud van Nistelrooy likely to continue to fill the striking breach in the squad.

Fans thoughts: "It's getting beyond a joke now, either we sign another top quality striker or we sell him. He only plays around 20 games a season and we can't have that if we want to win the league"

Van Persie's injury resulted in former Manchester United and Real Madrid forward Van Nistelrooy called up by the Netherlands for the first time in two years, as the 34-year-old came off the bench to score once in his country's opening Group E qualifier on Friday - a 5-0 win over San Marino.

After missing much of last season through injury, Van Persie was an ever-present as the Netherlands reached the World Cup final this summer, but he has had a frustrating start to the current domestic campaign.

Lacking full match fitness, he made only brief appearances in Arsenal's opening fixtures against Liverpool and Blackpool before his first start of the campaign was curtailed by injury after 35 minutes on Saturday.

Marouane Chamakh, who led the line after replacing Van Persie on Saturday, is likely to continue to play as Arsenal's sole forward with Denmark international Nicklas Bendtner also unavailable because of a groin injury.

There was better news for Gunners manager Arsene Wenger, though, on midfielder Samir Nasri.

The Frenchman injured his knee in the 1-1 league draw at Liverpool on 15 August. However, according to a statement on Arsenal's website, Nasri "will return to training in the next few days", after initially being expected to be ruled out for a month.

Arsenal to assess Theo Walcott's ankle injury

Arsenal's medical team will assess the extent of winger Theo Walcott's ankle injury on Wednesday.

The 21-year-old faces a spell on the sidelines after suffering the injury in England's 3-1 Euro 2012 qualifying win over Switzerland in Basle on Tuesday.

He went straight to hospital for an X-ray after being clipped by Yves Oehri in the build-up to England's opener.

England manager Fabio Capello described the injury as "a little problem" but could not confirm its nature.

After the match, Capello said: "I spoke with Theo and he told me it is not a big problem. I said 'two weeks', he said less."

Regardless of the outcome of the assessment, Walcott is almost certain to miss Arsenal's home Premier League match with Bolton this Saturday as well as the Champions League opener against Braga at the Emirates on Wednesday

The loss of the forward is another blow to Gunners manager Arsene Wenger, who has been hit by the news that Netherlands striker Robin van Persie will be sidelined until at least the middle of October because of an ankle problem.

The Frenchman is also without forward Nicklas Bendtner, who has a groin injury, while midfielder Samir Nasri is expected to return to training in the next few days after being absent since 15 August with a knee problem.

Walcott had been in good form for Arsenal, scoring four goals in three games before the international break.

Tuesday's match was Walcott's third international appearance following his controversial omission from England's World Cup squad this summer.

He had made a bright start before being injured a split second before Rooney handed England the lead against Switzerland.

Theo Walcott's injuries worry Arsene Wenger

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger admits he is concerned how Theo Walcott's latest injury setback will affect the England international on a mental level.

Walcott, 21, faces up to six weeks out after damaging his ankle in England's 3-1 Euro 2012 qualifying win over Switzerland on Tuesday.

Wenger said: "It is frustrating for him. You never know what kind of psychological impact it has."

"The mental side is always a question mark when a player gets injuries."

Walcott first suffered a lay-off in November 2008, when he dislocated a shoulder on England duty, ruling him out for six months.

A litany of further problems, including back, knee and hamstring injuries, marred his 2009-10 season - his stop-start availability for his club culminating in his controversial omission from England manager Fabio Capello's World Cup squad.

And Wenger added: "When you are a manager and you see an injury doesn't harm the career of a player, you are happy.

"After that the only unknown quantity is how much it will damage his confidence in the box, on tackling and all that."

Walcott made no secret of his disappointment at Capello's summer snub but he began this season brightly for club and country.

He found the net three times in four games for the Gunners and impressed in his three international appearances - even catching the eye during the 10 minutes he was on the field in Basle before a challenge by Swiss defender Yves Oehri ended his night.

But, despite his bad luck, Wenger has backed the player he acquired for £5m from Southampton in 2006 to once again bounce back.

"Ideally, you do not want a player to be injured many times by bad tackles," added the Frenchman.

"However, I believe Theo will deal well with that because he has done it before."

Second-placed Arsenal resume their Premier League campaign at home to Bolton on Saturday, with Wenger also without the talents of striker Robin van Persie, whose ankle knock carries approximately the same prognosis as Walcott's, and central defender Thomas Vermaelen (Achilles).

Winger Aaron Ramsey, meanwhile, is expected back in November as the Welshman continues his rehabilitation from the broken leg he suffered at Stoke last February.

Either way, with so many players missing (normal soft Arsenal injuries), the younger generation really starting to show form. Gibbs is some talent also, a little out of depth at times but otherwise class.
