Burns and Cornthwaite named in Aussie U23 Squad

Post by admin »

Adelaide United FC defender Robert Cornthwaite and striker Nathan Burns have been named in an Australian Qantas Under 23 squad that will hold a four day camp in Canberra to continue preparations towards the 2008 Olympic qualifying tournament. The squad consists primarily of Hyundai A-League players with all Australian clubs represented.

Burns and Cornthwaite will join the 22-man squad in Canberra at the Australian Institute of Sport on Monday.

Australian Under 23 coach Graham Arnold says the camp will play an important part in the team’s preparations for the qualifiers being held in February 2007.

“With only fairly limited time to work with the respective players this camp will form an important part of our preparation ahead of the commencement of the qualifying campaign in February,â€￾ Arnold said.

“I expect that competition for a place in the squad will be fairly intense with only 18 positions available for each match.â€￾

Cornthwaite attended the last Under 23 camp, while Burns was part of the Australian Under 20 squad that recently played in a qualifying tournament in India. Adelaide United’s other under 23 signing Dez Giraldi, who attended last month’s camp, is not in the squad due to injury.

The Qantas Under 23s squad for the AIS camp is:
Oliver Bozanic (uncontracted), Mark Bridge (Newcastle United Jets), Nathan Burns (Adelaide United), Robert Cornthwaite (Adelaide United), Adam D'Apuzzo (Newcastle United Jets), Spase Dilevski (Queensland Roar), Luka Glavas (Perth Glory), Labinot Haliti (Newcastle United Jets), Vince Lia (Melbourne Victory), Adrian Leijer (Melbourne Victory), David Micevski (Perth Glory), Mark Milligan (Sydney FC), Stuart Musialik (Newcastle United Jets), Sebastian Ryall (AIS), Kristian Sarkies (Melbourne Victory), Joel Theissen (uncontracted), Jacob Timpano (Sydney FC), Nikolai Topor-Stanley (Sydney FC), Tando Velaphi (AIS), Dario Vidosic (Queensland Roar), Danny Vukovic (Central Coast Mariners), Ruben Zadkovich (Sydney FC)

The team’s Olympic qualifying campaign commences with a home and away preliminary qualifying play-off against Chinese Taipei on February 14 and 21.

The lack of many regular A-League players demonstrtes the desperate need for a Reserve/Youth League.
