AU Academy

Post by FUBAR »

got this of the AU web site!!

Elite Academy shines in first hit outThursday, 15 July 2010
Elite Academy Manager Michael Valkanis gives a wrap up of the young squad’s progress and first game.

It has been nearly six months since the Elite Squad commenced training back in late January. In the first three months the group concentrated on functional game skills passing (striking the ball), running with the ball, first touch and 1v1. The academy players are not forced to run and focus on isolated conditioning, but rather start with a ball and end training with a ball. Younger players need to have as many contacts with the ball as possible, as this is the only way to learn ball control.

In the second three month block the focus moved onto playing the 1-4-3-3 formation with the point facing forwards (playing with a 10 behind the striker). The boys worked on playing out from the back, building up play, attacking play and how to defend as a four at the back in zone defence.

As soon as the young player gets the basic understanding, he should develop the skills and tactical insight facing real game situations because you learn football playing football. Too many times coaches will give players the answers to remember, but in game orientated practice the players will have to solve the problem and try to find solutions for themselves.

Usually like all coaches you assess how the session has gone based on the performance or even the enthusiasm of the players but more importantly, it’s about the transfer of the learning into the games. Therefore we decided that it was time to start playing games against local sides to evaluate where we are at and sees if the boys can transfer everything they have learnt and done into a real game.

On Monday the elite squad played its first game against West Adelaide’s Under 14A team. We deliberately wanted to play an older age group so the boys could be challenged. The elite boys showed it doesn’t matter how small you are as if you keep possession and play to a structure supporting each other and utilising space on the ground to exploit the opposition, the physical component doesn’t play a big role in the result.

From kick-off I counted 14 consecutive passes before we created our first chance. This gave the boys great confidence as they were a lot smaller than the opposition. I was really impressed with our possession and their understanding of not having to force the ball forward when it’s not on but rather to keep it until there is an opening to go forward.

We played out from the back every time and our philosophy is always to play out and build up from the back – no kick and rush. We ended up winning 5-0, but it was the boys’ performance and transfer of everything they have done at training into a game that was the most pleasing and rewarding aspect. It was great to see a mature approach to the game by 12 and 13 year olds.

The boys will continue to work on their technical and tactical side of the game, but from their first showing these boys are only going to improve and impress in the future.

A very good game to watch. Campbelltown had the size advantage but other than that both teams were of similar quality and skill.
First half AU Elite had a mix of the younger lads and their bigger boys, plenty of intensity from both sides, with good movement of the ball. Probably about 15 minutes before any shots on goals started, with both sides doing a great job of defending. After 40 minutes score was 0:0

Second half; virtually the same AU Elite and CCSC teams went out, Campbelltown increased the intensity and both teams were were constantly shutting each other down, forcing the ball the stay in the middle of the park. After about 5 minutes AU made a huge change with about 7 or 8 players of the smaller players.
Campbelltown kept up the pace and after several minutes scored a beautiful goal from an speedy attack on the right wing, the ball was crossed low and fast across goals and finished off by a full paced strike on the left post.
1:0
Not long after AU received a penalty when a player was dragged down in the box.
1:1
The status quo last for about 8 minutes and then CCSC created another wonder strike almost identical to the first.
2:1
Both teams continued to play with full intensity and magnificent ball skills and great game play.
The rest of the game was played out with full intensity, the last goal similar to the first to but not as exciting in the last 5 minutes of another 40 minute half.

Final score CCSC U14A 3:1 AU Elite Academy

Great game, I'm very impressed with both teams.

Well done to all involved.

The Elite team played a quality team that did not give much time
on the ball AC14's were faster and stronger and showed good first time passes.
the Elite team played the game with two less players than AC. By the 3 half the score
allready was 5-0 fresh Elite players came on AC relaxed and the Elite scored.
Well done to all the Elite and AC players you all played well .

Geez there's some nervous Nellies around.

No warnings on the BOM site other than for Metro waters and that appears to be for tomorrow.

It was most likely cancelled as they did not want to cut up the pitch for week 1 of the finals on Sunday. I think the finals have more importance than a trial game.
