In true scouse style there is no such think as a Liverpool work ethic ...

As per the old joke ...

A young scouser walks into a job centre and asks the clerk behind the counter if he had a job for him...

The clerk says "Yes , I have the perfect job, 2 hours a day, 20000 quid a week, a free car, private assistant, office with a view "

Young Scouser - " Hang on mate that sounds like bull-shite to me"

Clerk - "Well you started it, by asking for a job"

Although financially it's nice and simple - transfer fee plus cost of wages over the period of the contract, from some clubs' perspective it's not worth signing him for that sort of wages. Both Tottenham and Arsenal have pretty strict wage structures, and to pay 90k a week for Cole would have led to all sorts of arguments.

Liverpool are basically skint so another few hundred grand won't make any difference.
$4.7M = "A few hundred grand"?
Easy come, easy go

It was sort of a figure of speech - you'll note I didn't specify a timeframe. Possibly a few hundred grand a week, a fortnight, a month.........

what you're doing is more discriminating than what I am
you assumed that because I used a term that has been used to discriminate in the past that I was discriminating (your mistake) whereas you are blatantly discriminating against me because you believe me to be a racist (a false assumption)
get off your high horse

MANCINI EYES DONOVAN MOVE

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has admitted an interest in signing United States forward Landon Donovan.

Speaking in New York as City prepare to face Sporting Lisbon in a pre-season friendly on Friday, Mancini said Donovan was one of the players the club are looking at.

"We will have to see," he said. "The market is open until the end of August. It could be, because Donovan is a good player."

Donovan was one of the better players at the World Cup in South Africa, and the versatile front man also had an impressive spell on loan at Everton last season.

However, City could have a hard time prising him away from the Los Angeles Galaxy, with Major League Soccer bosses making it clear they have no intention of selling the league's biggest homegrown name.

HAMMERS WINNING REMY RACE

West Ham are winning the race to sign coveted Nice striker Loic Remy after making an improved bid.

The 23-year-old has attracted interest from a host of clubs throughout Europe, with Roy Hodgson's Liverpool also linked with the striker.

After having a couple of offers rebuffed, the Hammers have now reportedly agreed to pay the 13.5million euros fee for the player in just one payment, rather than in instalments which was originally proposed.

This new offer seems to have swayed the race in their favour, with Nice's general manager Patrick Governatori confirming to L'Equipe that they are very close to an agreement with the Hammers.

He said: "We received a new offer from West Ham which seems good and suits us.

"If Liverpool want him, we need clear arrangements and commitments. West Ham are very keen. And we want to sort out that case before the end of the month."

EDUARDO LEAVES ARSENAL FOR SHAKHTAR

Eduardo's ill-fated spell at Arsenal has been brought to a close after he completed his move to Shakhtar Donetsk.

The Brazilian-born Croatia striker has agreed a four-year deal with the big-spending Ukrainian club, with Arsenal receiving a reported £6million from the transfer.

"FC Shakhtar have signed Eduardo Da Silva from Arsenal. All the details have been agreed at Donbas Arena in Donetsk," read a statement on the official Shakhtar Donetsk website.

Eduardo joined Arsenal in 2007 but just as he was showing signs that he was adjusting to the Premier League, he suffered a horrendous broken leg and dislocated ankle at Birmingham.

The severity of the injury shocked Eduardo's team-mates and has since been blamed by some for the Gunners' inability to maintain their title challenge in the second half of the 2007-08 season.

The 27-year-old made his comeback in February 2009, almost exactly a year after the controversial challenge by Martin Taylor.

However, there were concerns that the psychological scars from the tackle have had a negative impact on his game and Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has allowed him to leave.

Shakhtar's Romanian coach Mircea Lucescu said: "We wanted to buy Eduardo before he moved to Arsenal.

"Not everything went his way last season, but he is still a player of very high quality, a real marksman.

"Yes, he had a serious injury, we are aware of the risk, but at the same time we realise he can give a lot to Shakhtar. We expect a lot from Eduardo."

Meanwhile, defender Thomas Vermaelen believes he will forge a robust centre-back partnership with new signing Laurent Koscielny.

Vermaelen has been impressed by what he has seen of the summer recruit from French club Lorient and they could be paired together right from the start of the season.

With centre-backs Sol Campbell, William Gallas and Mikael Silvestre likely to find new clubs, Wenger is short of options.

Johan Djourou's return from injury provides Wenger with an alternative and Vermaelen, who enjoyed a superb debut season in the Premier League last term, would be happy to play with either of them.

"It doesn't matter for me who I play with," he told the club's official website, www.arsenal.com.

"You know each other's qualities and you know how the players play.

"I didn't know Koscielny before but I have seen him in training.

"He is a good defender, he puts pressure on the attackers all the time and he is tight with his marking.

"I have played alongside him a few times in training and that has gone well. He is a good defender.

"Djourou had a long injury last year, for almost all of the season.

"I think for him it is good to be back. I know him well and he is a quality player."

Emerging midfielder Francis Coquelin will be travelling the path taken by Koscielny but in reverse after signing a new long-term contract with Arsenal.

The 19-year-old Frenchman will now join Ligue 1 side Lorient in a season-long loan deal and intends to challenge for a first-team place when he returns to the Emirates Stadium.

"Arsenal is the right club for me because Arsene Wenger trusts young players and we can learn quickly at a high level," he said.

"The first six months were quite hard for me because of the language but now I have learned English, now I have my house, my friends in England, and I feel comfortable.

"They have given me a new contract so obviously they are counting on me and I am really pleased with that. I will give that back by working hard."

WILSON COMPLETES LIVERPOOL SWITCH

Liverpool have completed the signing of Rangers defender Danny Wilson after he passed his medical on Merseyside.

The 18-year-old centre-back has joined on a three-year contract.

Liverpool will pay the Scottish side £2million up front with a further £3million dependent on appearances and add-ons.

"This is a massive challenge for me. This is one of the best leagues in the world and I will be playing for one of the biggest teams in the world,'' said the Scottish Football Association and Football Writers' Young Player of the Year.

"Coming here from Scotland, people may say I might not be ready for this, but that is a challenge I want to put on myself and that's the reason I came here.

"It wasn't a difficult decision to come here as Liverpool are not a team who come in for you every day, so I can't wait to get started.

"There were other clubs interested in me who are in the Champions League, but once Liverpool came in for me there was only one team I wanted to go to.''

Yeah, right. Because when Liverpool is *seriously* interested in you, you'd pick to go to West Ham.

Doesn't mean a player wants to go to Liverpool just because they're interested. Also doesn't mean that Liverpool will even put in an offer.

1. Hence the "seriously interested", as in making an offer, or on the verge of. You wouldn't jump the gun and sign for West Ham if that was the case.
2. Exactly. The president sounds like he's trying to force Liverpool's hand and put in an offer. Which isn't unusual in itself when one of the bigger English clubs are "interested".

VIDIC AGREES NEW UNITED DEAL

Nemanja Vidic has committed his long-term future to Manchester United, according to chief executive David Gill.

The Serbia defender's current deal is up in two years but an extension to his contract has been agreed by both parties.

Vidic has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford but he is now staying at the club.

Gill told MUTV: "I am very pleased to confirm that we agreed terms with Nemanja three or four weeks ago on a new long-term deal with the club."

Vidic's decision to stay is a huge boost for United given Rio Ferdinand's fitness problems.

While the length of the contract extension has not been disclosed, Gill believes Vidic will put pen to paper next month.

Gill said: "We sat down with Nemanja and his advisor at the end of last season and started discussions. They broke up when Nemanja went away to the World Cup, but resumed when Serbia were knocked out.

"It's yet to be signed - the paperwork is now being sorted by our lawyers and being checked by Nemanja's advisors. He's still away on holiday but the plan is that when he gets back the papers will be signed.

"We've shaken hands on it and we're confident it will all be signed and sealed in early August.

"It's great news for Manchester United and great news for Nemanja and the fans."

Gill added: "There was a lot of speculation about Nemanja's future, but in my view it's been the media drumming some old stories.

"They certainly didn't come out of the Manchester United camp and I'm confident they didn't come out of Nemanja's camp."
