Poles a part of Aussie preparations

Post by Bomber »

A DATE with Poland awaits the Socceroos, with FFA locking in yet another friendly in preparation for the Asian Cup.

Australia will play Poland in Gdansk on September 7, just three days after the friendly with Switzerland in St Gallen.

No fewer than 11 games have already been confirmed within the next year - and that number will rise if the Socceroos advance from their group in January's Asian Cup in Qatar.

The Socceroos face India (January 10), Korea (January 14) and Bahrain (January 18) in Group C.

The confirmed friendlies are against Slovenia (August 11), Switzerland (September 3), Poland (September 7), Chile (October), Egypt (November), UAE (January), Germany (March 29) and a home fixture in June next year.

I'm actually glad that they are playing some teams that they havent played against in a long while (if ever in some cases). Also hope the new coach plays some youngsters in preparation for the next WC campaign. The "oldies" (anyone over 33) really need to step aside now. May be some short term heartache, but got to look at the big picture here.

Plus, a few wins under the belt here will really boost our World Ranking. Even though the current system is a sham designed to favour big nations in the big continents, it helps when it comes to being seeded & with the Media.

Not if we break the top 10. Also helps on seedings inside Asia.

will be good to have a hit out against decent teams before a major tournament. Looking forward to see what the Socceroos can do against these teams in the lead up

I'll be seeing most of these. The mrs is from Switzerland so I have surprised her with a trip to Europe. Little does she know how much football we will be watching...

You are right Bomber, the long term future of the game here needs Australia making the World Cup every time. I would sacrifice success at this Asian Cup to ensure we make Brazil 2014 anytime.
