Average goals scored (after 60 games) reaches 2.2
After 60 games the average in S.Afrika has at last reached the all-time low of Italia '90.
We'll never again reach the Mexico '70 average of 3.0, but a 2.7 (as in both USA '94 and France '98) would be good.
Goal-scoring isn't everything, but I wonder if IFAB, FIFA and the football world at large will give consideration to changes to halt this slide in the scoring rate on it's biggest stage?

I've discussed this on another forum, and apparently it is only AFL rednecks who want to see high scoring games. Real soccer fans appreciate low scoring games, especially 0-0 draws...!Con wrote:After 60 games the average in S.Afrika has at last reached the all-time low of Italia '90.

I always use the word "soccer" when aussie rules football is also mentioned, otherwise it gets confusing. And I'm a real fan....Ocean Rain wrote:Not so real fans call it soccer.winzor wrote:I've discussed this on another forum, and apparently it is only AFL rednecks who want to see high scoring games. Re: Average goals scored (after 60 games) reaches 2.2
Group H in 6 games a measly 8 goals were scored. Round of 16 had a fair few goals scored and we can thank Germany for the average being as high as it is
Re: Average goals scored (after 60 games) reaches 2.2
Hell, thinking about it, lucky there were four games when a team scored 4 goals, and one game where 7 goals were scored, otherwise that 2.2 average figure would have been shot.
And sorry, I should have provided the historical figures for previous World Cups:
1930 Uruguay 3.9 goals per match
1934 Italy 4.1
1938 France 4.7
1950 Brazil 4.0
1954 Switzerland 5.4
1958 Sweden 3.8

1998 France 2.7
2002 S.Korea/Japan 2.5

Thanks for your nice words, Cyril. But you know what I was getting at. Without Germany scoring 4 goals in 3 games, Argentina 4 in 1 game, and Portugal 7 in 1 game, that average would have been way down on 2.2....
Anyhow on a better note, with the pressure off in the 3rd place play-off Klose, Mueller, Forlan and Suarez could really go for that golden boot and neutrals may see more goals. And in the Final Villa and Sneijder will chase that boot too.
If 9 goals are scored in these two games the average will at least reach that 2.3 second-to-lowest figure.
There seems no doubt FIFA will review the dire scoring rate on football's biggest stage and make recommendations to the Laws Board I.F.A.B. for a further tweaking of the Laws to moderately increase that rate similar to the spike in 1994...

Again, I repeat, that's how an average works. You could equally say, without X, Y and Z only scoring 0 or 1 a game, the average (there's that word again) would be up around the 3 mark and the numpties could stop complaining.Con wrote:Thanks for your nice words, Cyril. Let's hope for Con's sake that Spain don't win the cup - can't have winners scoring less than 10 goals in the cup can we (Spain so far have scored 7 goals)?

winzor, I partly agree with your cynicism about Blatter. After all, in Euro & British establishment circles when he was General Secretary he was known as "Herr 10-ideas-a-day man, and 11 of them are bad".
But from memory, his idea for enlarging the goals was moderate - 2 feet (600mm) wider by 1 foot (300mm) higher. Of course it never got up because he was a poor salesman and couldn't properly point out that goalies are taller on average (than they were when 1877 laws were cobbled together) due to better health and nutrition.
A smaller increase (2 ball diameters wider by 1 diameter higher) would have been easier to sell without drastically changing the game. Imagine, all those times a post or crossbar is struck would be goals with this change. Again from memory, the woodwork was struck over 100 times at France '98, and with this change those shots would have been goals..

it probably didn't get over the line because we all know how corrupt blatter, warner and bin hamman are. Adidas probably didn't want it and what adidas wants, adidas gets.

Eh, steady on, Col. I should have said in my post that was Blatter blathering on after Italia '90 about increasing the goal-size TOO MUCH (600mm wider x 300mm higher), and HE was the one quoting increase in average human height, etc (see Wikepedia "...Studies in modern times have observed a gradual increase in height...etc,etc". I recall him going on about, quote "standard of living..., quality of life after the industrial revolution.., nutrition.., increase in average height of Yanks since their Civil War, blah, blah..
FIFA was under pressure after the dire 1990 Cup to deliver a better product for the Yanks at USA '94. They managed to get the I.F.A.B. to restrict goalies from picking up back-passes and throw-ins, and a few other subtle changes, but they were never going to get the goal-size increase over the line. He MIGHT have got a smaller increase, like 2 ball diameters wider by 1 ball diameter higher, but that too was a long shot.
Col, have you liked any of the changes and improvements to the Laws of the Game over recent years?
Anyhow Col, after the 3-2 scoreline in the 3rd place game you'll be rivetted to know that if 4 goals are scored in the Final, the average-score figure will crack past the current 2.2 number...

On the rule changes, i think most have been positive changes although id like to see a Match review panel instated for the National league of every country in the world (obviously the countries that dont televise games would be pardoned) so the divers are weeded out because its getting ridiculous if you ask me and obviously with a video review panel, harsher or leaner penalties could be given to red card incidences and also penalties handed down to incidences that the officials possibly missed during a game. Thats would change the game dramatically for the better and the good of the game and there is no doubt it could only benefit the game worldwide. Id also like to see goal line technology introduced (which i think we are now going to get) and id like to see some sort of changes to the way referees are selected whereby to become a referee in a certain league, you would have to have some sort of prior game experience as a player to better understand the game and why players sometimes do what they do in terms of not being able to stop when going for a challenge etc etc because this World Cup and what we see generaly around the world with officials at this point in time is really showing the difference between where the players are at compared to where their inept officials are at and the gap is as wide as its ever been and getting wider and that cannot be good for the game in my opinion
