lets wait and see Messi do it outside of the protective UEFA bubble in which he performs (and is well looked after by officialdom)
over 2 or 3 world cups,
in his National team without his Barca setup
and in a comp where people may actually tackle him

then we can judge him

at the moment all he has done is score a few goals ( fantastic as they may be ) in a very sheltered competition

Couldnt agree more with what you have said, lets just sit back and wait another 3 months before we start making these predictions, personally i think Messi will struggle in the world cup when the heat is on.

in that case i changed my mind. If he was alive, he'd be 121. So I'm sure he's dead, but i don't have pics so it didn't happen.

mind you Stallone kept them in the game
Stallone bog imo, pele sat out most of it whilst the rest got them back in the game then stepped up to be the hero, over rated performance by Pele, one goal and everyone thinks he won them the game.

I've told you before, Kevin O' Callaghan was the Man Of The Match for this one. Not only was a left winger playing in goal but he allowed them to break his arm so they could escape. We breed them tough at Millwall.

Some credit has to be given to Caine's coaching too

imo pele and maradona and distefano and puscas ect ect stared for their respective countries messis is yet to do so.

but i also think that we cant compare any of them to many years apart the game has changed so much.

if pele trained in todays era and wore the boots of today kicked the balls of today would he of been even better we dont know as it is messi is the best in the world now and thats what really matters lets just hope we get a great world cup out of all these stars.

Pele played in an era where 9-3 and 8-2 were common scorelines, the formations were almost backwards (3-4-4) to what they are today.
Go download a torrent of the game from anything up until the early 70s and watch the FULL GAME. Its 90mins of constant counter attack.

Difficult to compare based on era alone. But from all the old games ive seen, today's Messi is more than capable of bagging double hat-tricks per typical pre 1970s game.

3-4-4? Didn't know you were allowed 12 players on the pitch back in those days

just out of curiousity bomber, how old are you mate? cause unless you're in your about sixty i dare say you wouldn't be privvy to performances of di stefano either. and exactly what footage outside of the world cup (which any human being with a computer can dig up) were hawkesy and yourself sampling of pele. i couldn't imagine too many santos games being aired in your respective countries through the 50 & 60's. don't get me wrong i believe pele to be an amazing player but unfortunately the comparrissons will always be inconclusive. what we do know is what we see week in week out for the last 25 years atleast and messi is certainly in my top 3 from that. zidane & maradona in no particular order.

Seeing you asked, I am 46. There are many recorded docos about the great Real Madrid side and the wizardry of the great man. The guy was years ahead of everyone else at the time and did "tricks" that no-one else ever really dreamed about doing on the pitch. Try and get a video of the 7-3 Euro cup with over Eintracht Frankfurt and get a glimpse of his mastery. Even the Hampden Park crowd remained after the game applauding he and the team an hour after the final whistle. I guess you would remember the awe of Maradona when he started doing similar (tricks). Then, when you read numerous articles about the player, written by other top coaches, players of the time, it isnt hard to put him in the "legend" category. Pele likewise needs no introduction. His record and performances in World Cup finals are testament to the fact that he was probably one of the highest ever achievers in the game.
Current day players, use different balls, play on decent pitches week in week out and have technology (better footballs, boots) on their side as well.
Having said all that, Messi (I repeat) is a world class player and no 1 currently, without question. If/when he can play a major part in the big/major tournaments for club and even country consistenly, he will earn similar parise from me.

i do agree with your comments on the technology of the game changing but the point i was making was in response to your very first statement. you stated us younger fellas were not fit to judge as we were not privvy to the likes of di stefano. you being 2 years of age when the man retired would also leave you unfit to judge aswell. we can all sample videos and highlights regardless of our age. i have seen footage of him and he was amazing but surely you must see that vision wise you are in the same boat as the rest of us. so either we're all fit to judge or nobody under 65 can comment.

I'm sorry the laws state nothing about formation, so the laws prove nothing.

They state that one player must be a goalkeeper but that goal keeper can play as a striker if you so decide. SO, even though I'm sure the Kop made an error the laws do not prove him wrong.
