Young Socceroos fail in Asia - Postecoglou to go

Post by admin »

The Qantas Young Socceroos have failed to qualify for the FIFA World Youth Championship after bowing out in the Quarter Finals of the AFC Youth Championships today. Australia went down 2-1 to defending champions Korea Republic in Kolkata, India.

Chris Grossman scored Australia’s goal, equalising in the 17th minute after Korea opened the scoring in the 10th minute. The Koreans winner came seven minutes before half time.

The failure to reach the World Youth Championship almost certainly spells the end for coach Ange Postecoglou. Australia has suffered a string of poor results during his seven year reign and it is widely expected the FFA has run out of patience with Postecoglou.

Official Report:

The Qantas Young Socceroos have been knocked out of the race for the 2007 FIFA World Youth Cup after losing 2-1 in their quarter final against South Korea at the AFC Youth Championship in Kolkata, India.

South Korea, who are looking for their third consecutive AFC Youth Championship, made a perfect start scoring after just nine minutes with a free kick driven spectacularly into the top right corner.

Despite missing the services of key attacking weapon in suspended striker Nathan Burns, Australia equalized eight minutes later through midfielder Chris Grossman, whose left foot strike from inside the penalty area followed a ball laid off by striker Bruce Djite.

The Koreans again took the lead ten minutes prior to the interval in unusual circumstances, with another free kick, this time from distance, which cleared the wall and bounced over the head of Australian goalkeeper Tando Velaphi.

The match, which again was played in hot and humid conditions and on a bumpy pitch at the Salt Lake Stadium, saw the Koreans dominate much of the second half ensuring Velaphi was busy throughout.

Australia lost defender Sebastian Ryall to a red card in the dying minutes for what the referee deemed a dangerous tackle.

“Obviously it is very disappointing to lose and miss out on qualifying but to be fair we came up against a very good side in South Korea who are reigning champions and they deserved their victory today,â€￾ said Qantas Young Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou.

“We worked hard enough but unfortunately conceded two goals from set pieces which was rather disappointing, but once we fell behind we were always chasing the game and taking a few risks.â€￾

Japan defeated Saudi Arabia 2-1 in the other semi final played earlier and they join South Korea plus the winner of the other two quarter finals in representing Asia at the 2007 FIFA World Youth Cup in Canada.

Australia 1 (Chris Grossman 17’)

South Korea 2 (9’, 35’)

Australian line-up:
Tando Velaphi (gk); Steven O’Dor, Matthew Spiranovic, Sebastian Ryall, Sean Ontong, Chris Grossman (Dario Vidosic 52’), Jimmy Downey (Troy Hearfield 70’), Evan Berger (Oliver Bozanic 54’), Kaz Patafta, David Williams, Bruce Djite

Substitutes: Mitchell Langerak, Michael Marrone, Brad Porter, Peter Eleftherakis, Tarek Elrich

Suspended: Nathan Burns

Red Card: Ryall 90’

Again we fail. No wonder we are losing kids to o/s clubs when we have to accept mediocrity across all our National teams. This never ever happens with any of our National Sports!!!

Come on Australia give us S.A players a go.

I agree Ange to go.
Still dont think he's a bad coach and will get an A-league gig a couple of years i rkn.

But after 7-8 years now, the team definately needs a fresh approach.

Another report:

Song helps Korea advance

KOLKATA: Holder Korea Republic showed its continental supremacy against Asian newcomer Australia during its 2-1 win in the first quarterfinal of the AFC Youth championship at the Salt Lake Stadium here on Monday.

The defending champion played aggressively to force the Aussies into submission. Korea will take on another strong contender for the title — Japan — in the semifinal to be held here on Thursday.

Korea utilised the first opportunity that came its way, converting off a set-piece. Jin Hyung Song, who took the free-kick from about 25 yards, curled the ball past the Australian wall and into the net.

The opening session witnessed Song's expertise in dead-ball situations, and the Korean midfielder provided yet another example of this by scoring the second goal in the 36th minute.

The second strike was even more significant as the Koreans found their lead neutralised in the 18th minute.

The Koreans dominated the proceedings in the first half, dwarfing their physically superior opponents with a good tactical game that was all about speed, ball control and an admirable sense of positioning.

On the other hand, despite getting its most promising man in the attack, Bruce Djite, Australia failed to make much of an impression.

The only occasion the Australian striker — who missed two matches in the league stage owing to suspensions — escaped the alert policing by the Korean defence, it gave his team the equaliser.

Christopher Grossman found the target with a rasping right-footer after the Korean defender Chul Soon Choi set the former up with a feeble clearance while trying to prevent Djite from reaching a midfield lob.

Korea attacked with renewed vigour after Australia had scored. Young Rok Shin, the striker who played in the FIFA Youth World Cup last year, could have helped his team regain the lead, but his 29th-minute header was fisted over by the Australian custodian Tando Velaphi.

Song was pressed into service in the 35th minute when Korea earned a free-kick, yards outside the box.

The diminutive midfielder reproduced his magic, beating Velaphi for the second time.

BARELY ANY OF THOSE PLAYERS EVEN PLAY REGULARLY. WHAT DO YOU EXPECT COMING UP AGAINST A BATTLE HARDENED ASIAN CHAMPION. tHE ASIAN TEAMS HAVE MOST OF THEIR PLAYERS PLAYING CONSISTANTLY AND HAVE PROBABLY ANOTHER 30 PLAYERS WHO WOULD BE GOOD ENOUGH TO PLAY AT THAT LEVEL WHO PLAY REGULARLY.

JAMES WESOLOWSKI
JAMES MEREDETH
JAMES TRIOSI

ALL WOULD OF MADE A DIFFERENCE BUT WERENT RELEASED BY THEIR ENGLISH CLUBS. THE DEPTH IN OUR YOUTH IS TERRIBLE...

WHY????

BECAUSE THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO YOUTH DEVELOPMENT... AS FAR AS THE YOUTH IS CONCERNED THEY WERE PROBABLY BETTER OFF PLAYING FOR ADELAIDE CITY/WEST ADELAIDE IN THE OLD NSL DAYS...WHERE THEY ACTUALLLY GAVE KIDS A GO

bu the thing is there arent many good players overseas??? honestyl name some good enough to be in the under 20 national team....

i can think of 3.

the reason these kids arent playing is because there is no national reserve comp to produce players through, and coaches not wiling to play the better kids they do have... ive said this in many posts if ALeague doesnt get the youth problem sorted then A-league will become a holiday league for has-been overseas player to come for a payed holiday.

The Youth League question is raised time and time again. There is only one reason... money! Clubs will have to fly two sets of teams across the country, as well as pay these young players. Distance is a perennial problem in Australia with no easy solution.

The players are there.
The quality is there.

What's missing?

A stage for them to play on!

Bring on a National Reserve/Youth League.

Use some of the money gained by selling the game out to Pay TV to pay for it!!!!!!!!!!!!

when i said only 3 players i can think of i was talking specifically to players overseas at a decent level that would make a difference at international standard...

half of the names you wrote are just off some internet site you wouldnt have a clue what any of them are like...

a quality under 20 player should be playing reserves consistantly in a big league... eg england, spain, italy, france, holland, germany...

players in youth teams is from international under 20's standard you have to be playing senior football
