Keep cool, Red tells axed Socceroo twin

Val Migliaccio From: The Advertiser March 01, 2010 9:38AM

ADAM Griffiths has warned his twin brother Joel not to lose his temper after his omission from the Socceroos 2011 Asian Cup qualifying squad baffled the Beijing Guoan striker

Joel expressed his disbelief after Socceroos boss Pim Verbeek announced his 25-man squad for Wednesday's final qualifying match against Indonesia in Brisbane.

Joel vented his frustration in the lead-up to the announcement in May of the final 23-man squad for the World Cup finals in South Africa. "When I look at the players getting call-ups, I have to say, without being big-headed, that I am better than a lot of them," he told SBS' The World Game.

It is uncertain if Verbeek overlooked the marksman after Chinese Super League officials suspended him for 12 matches with an $8000 fine after two separate incidents.

"I said to Joel `just keep your discipline and keep playing well like you have been', then no-one can say anything to him," Adam said. "I think that's the direction he's going to take."

Joel Griffiths, the 2008 Johnny Warren Medal winner, scored a brilliant winner for Beijing against Melbourne Victory last week in the opening round of the AFC Champions League in Beijing.

He then called Adam before his twin brother made his debut in Adelaide United's 1-0 win over Asian champion Pohang Steelers at Hindmarsh.

"Joel's happy with his performance (against Melbourne)," Adam said. "He spoke a lot about his exclusion from the Socceroos and he wanted to prove he's still got what it takes to be selected."

Adam played for 27 minutes against the Steelers after replacing Reds' holding midfielder Michael Marrone.

He kept Pohang's marauding midfielders at bay but admitted his timing was off because of a lack of game time in an unhappy stint with Saudi Arabia's Al-Shabab. "I haven't played for a long time," he said. "It was good to get out there against a very good team. They went down (to ground) easy but the boys defended well we got the goal and got the result."
