World Cup Final - Sydney or Melbourne

Post by admin »

SYDNEY has sunk the soccer boot into Melbourne in a weak attempt to claim the World Cup final for itself.

Barely a day after our Cup bid was launched, Sydney's Daily Telegraph got the first kick in.

It said we didn't deserve the final because of our miserable weather, murky Yarra, syringe-riddled beaches, swine flu and lack of Lara Bingle.

But in Melbourne, soccer supporters shrugged it off as a professional foul, and showed the passion that makes us a sporting mecca.

About 1000 fans welcomed the Soccerooos to the city.

More than 70,000 are set to roar at the MCG tonight for what amounts to little more than a training run.

At Federation Square, in front of "Victoria - the place to be" signs, a parade of players praised Melbourne and its sporting heart, the MCG.

Coach Pim Verbeek hailed the 'G, "this fantastic stadium in this beautiful city".

Skipper Lucas Neill said the side loved coming here and thanked fans who "always give us a good reception".

And supporters here for the clash with Japan said we had earned the right to any World Cup final.

Adelaide police officer Darren Bailhache said Sydney certainly didn't deserve it.

"I was in Sydney last week. I thought the turnout in Sydney was poor for the national team," he said.

"Just 39,500 doesn't justify what the Australian team should receive from Sydney.

"I think the Melbourne supporters . . . give the Australian team what they deserve."

Committee for Melbourne chief George Pappas said our facilities and love of sport should have Melbourne over the line already.

"It's pretty obvious, really," he said. "We get more crowds to the rugby than they do in Sydney."

And Lord Mayor Robert Doyle let rip, too:

"The World Cup final should be held in Melbourne at the MCG because it is the world's greatest stadium with the world's greatest sports crowds in the world's greatest city."

Sydney don't deserve it, they can't sell out.

MCG would be my pick but the best soccer stadium in Australia is Lang Park with a capacity 55,000
that place rocks.

Maybe everyone doesn't adore AUFC

Last time I checked it's not an AUFC supporters only forum

So no need to tell them to 'F OFF'

is that the olympics one, if so I agree. Unless I'm mistaken, it has the ability to be turned into a rectangular seating arrangement.

lang park would be ideal as it is rectangle, but the money hungrey suits will go for the G or ANZ due to the capacity being near 100,000 for both...

Gotta be the MCG. Hate to say it (cos it's in Melbourne). A World Cup final anywhere else but the MCG doesn't make sense to me. It can hold 100,000 (i think) & a World Cup Final would sell it out for sure. Imagine the atmosphere of a World Cup final at the MCG. I'm there already.

it WILL BE Sydney...

World Cup sells out no matter where the game is held... Stadium Australia can be made rectangular and holds 90k+... i can almost guarantee it will be Sydney...

Correct, heres some fact
The stadium was originally built to temporarily hold 110,000 spectators, making it the largest Olympic Stadium ever built as well as the largest stadium in Australia. In 2003 reconfiguration work was completed to shorten the north and south wings, and install movable seating. These changes reduced the capacity to 83,500 for a rectangular field and 81,500 for an oval field (making it the second largest stadium in Australia after the Melbourne Cricket Ground). Awnings were also added over the North and South stands, which means that now most of the seating is under cover
This tells me that Stadium Australia has the provisions in place to go back to a 100K+ seated Stadium which means they will get the WC Final and rightly so i reckon. ANZ Stadium aka Stadium Australia gets my vote every day of the week :D
