realistically the ref was a shocker.. 4 pens should have been given to chelski... abidals challenge was not a red.. chelski deserved to go through.

Any game ruined by bad referees is a major disappointment though.

I don't think any were that clear cut to give as penalties. Especially the two hand ball decisions.

From the Telegraph:

Chelsea v Barcelona: Referee's verdict

Former Football League referee John Deakin said he had never seen a reaction as angry as the one from some Chelsea players on Wednesday night, and admitted that the appointment of referee Tom Henning Ovrebo to the game was "maybe a step too far".

However, Deakin dismissed the belief that Ovrebo should not have been handed a match of such magnitude because he comes from Norway.

"There have been some excellent referees from Scandinavia, like Kim Milton Nielsen, Anders Frisk and Terje Hauge," he said.

Here Deakin assesses the five key decisions that shaped the game:

1) Dani Alves's tackle on Florent Malouda.
Verdict: Penalty. "Obviously it was inside the area, even though the referee gave the offence outside."

2) Eric Abidal's tug on Didier Drogba.
Verdict: Penalty. "Yes, he pulled his shirt."

3) Gerard Pique’s handball.
Verdict: Penalty. “This was probably a penalty because it was hand to ball, so the referee should have given it.”

4) Samuel Eto'o's handball.
Verdict: No penalty. "The one at the end was not a penalty but the reaction that followed was accelerated by the fact that Barcelona had just scored."

5) Abidal's dismissal.
Verdict: No red card. "People forget that incident, but it shouldn't have been a sending off."
GET SOME NUTS!

Why didnt Ballack chase Drogba around (like he did the referee) after Drogba missed the sitter?

I cant remember watching any game where there isnt a decision that may have swung the match in one teams favour.

Henry had a clear cut one in the first leg - this would have changed everything had that been given and we may not be talking about this now.

Abidal should not have been sent off and the game again would have been different.

To quote the great Homer (Simpson) - If ifs and buts were candies and nuts..............

Chelsea blew it themselves. You can't rely on the referee to help you. They were playing a Barcelone defence minus Puyol, Marquez and Abidal for the last half an hour. No excuses!!

PS Final is setup perfectly for Man Utd now. Barca missing Abidal, Alves, and Marquez plus who knows what could happen in the next three weeks.
