Liverpool Captain Gerrard Pleads Not Guilty, Risks Five year
The iconic midfielder's case may now go to Crown Court as matters get a little more serious...
Steven Gerrard has denied charges of assault and affray and has recieved bail. According to Sky Sports, he will now appear at Crown Court on March 20 due to the severity of the charges.
He spoke only to state his name, date of birth and address, and to affirm that he understood the charges.
He was hurried into a black BMW afterwards.
The Italian media - Tuttosport namely - are reporting that Gerrard could end up with a five-year prison sentence for his part in a Merseyside nightclub brawl on December 29.
Furthermore, the influential 28-year-old could be banned from international action by the FA, thus ending his Three Lions career.
The Reds skipper appeared at North Sefton Magistrates Court, Southport, along with John Doran and Ian Smith. They are, of course, charged with assaulting Marcus McGee, who needed hospital treatment for facial injuries following the scuffle.
A crowd gathered outside of the court, but there were no supporters inside. A court spokesperson explained: "The court manager met with police and decided the public gallery would not be open for safety reasons."
Still, there was be a strong police presence on hand in order to maintain calm

He'll get 10 minutes community service, and he will probably not even do it.

Must say that an assault case like this would not normally attract anything like a 5 year sentence, if you keep an eye on the UK cop reality shows I have seen far worse incidents and the first time offenders get slaps on the wrist every time, I was shocked to see what some of them did to each other but they rarely even got community service. So if Gerrard gets off lightly it says more about the overall standard of the British Justice system than it does special treatment for "celebrities"

I don't think a scouser going to court is a particularly out of the ordinary thing.
Just wish more of them got caught and sentenced.

I watched a fight last night in Norwood which was worse than this one sounds and 2 people were arrested. Not for fighting, but for a breach of the peach because they were swearing. So don't talk to me aboutthe british justice system when the aussie old bill would rather et a coffee than nick someone.povman1964 wrote:Must say that an assault case like this would not normally attract anything like a 5 year sentence, if you keep an eye on the UK cop reality shows I have seen far worse incidents and the first time offenders get slaps on the wrist every time, I was shocked to see what some of them did to each other but they rarely even got community service. Hawskey gee you are so sensitive, I was merely trying to point out that if Gerrard gets let off lightly it is not due to his fame. Was not trying to make a comparison between the two countries Justice systems. In fact from my experience they are both too lenient.
