Roar dominate in Matildas squad

Post by guess_who »

New W-League champions Queensland Roar have seven players in the 21-woman Australian squad chosen by coach Tom Sermanni to face Italy in two friendly fixtures.

Lana Harch, the W-League player of the year, and captain Kate McShea head the Roar contingent in the Matildas for the matches in Parramatta on January 31 and Canberra on February 7.

Sydney's Danielle Brogan, Canberra's Ellie Brush and Emily van Egmond, 15-year-old daughter of Newcastle Jets boss Gary van Egmond, all received their first call-ups to the national squad.

"The squad has a good balance of experienced, established players together with bright, young talent," Sermanni said on Thursday.

"Several players have stepped up to the mark and displayed good form throughout the W-League season, earning them a well deserved spot in the national team.

"It is this form and confidence which will serve the team well heading into these matches."

Matildas squad: Lydia Williams, Ellie Brush, Caitlin Munoz (Canberra United); Melissa Barbieri (Melbourne Victory); Amber Neilson, Jo Peters, Cheryl Salisbury, Emily van Egmond, Katie Gill (Newcastle Jets); Collette McCallum, Lisa de Vanna (Perth Glory); Lana Harch, Elise Kellond-Knight, Clare Polkinghorne, Karla Reuter, Kate McShea, Tameka Butt, Lauren Colthorpe (Queensland Roar); Danielle Brogan, Sarah Walsh, Heather Garriock (Sydney FC).

You cant seriously say you were expecting any of our girls to make the squad.

Scalzi. Wins an award for a hat-trick and all of a sudden she should be playin alongside devanna and walsh.
Donna. Good player but just doesnt cut it.
Tokich. Don't make me laugh!
VB. When shes up against players such as walsh, devanna, gill and munoz she will struggle. Question? What is her position? Played striker for years but then played midfield in all the games i saw.

All in all no surprises.

VB is a striker, she has a very rare sense of where the goal is never scared to finish.
She also likes to participate in build up, technically she is good and has a very decent vision of the game, so ultimately she should play support striker dropping back to lay the ball off and open spaces and get the goals as she can play closer to the danger zone. Quality player anyway, very difficult character, but I like her.

I think Tokich is a better player than what was shown in W League. Not given a fair go I reckon, always difficult when coming from another state.

Pity to see a few missing from injury (Carroll, Tristam, Chapman) but great to see others getting an opportunity. I think they will do well as most of the the selected players are fit and match ready ( there are 4 obvious exceptions).
