Genoa prepare Owen swoop
Genoa are lining up a surprise January bid for England’s Ballon d’Or winner Michael Owen, according to the Italian media.
The Rossoblu are an ambitious side, as confirmed by their capture of Diego Milito in the summer, who now tops the Capocannoniere charts with 12 goals.
Milito has been carrying the weight of the team on his shoulders so far this season and President Enrico Preziosi is seeking help upfront.
The dream buy would be Owen, whose contract with Newcastle United is up for renewal, and seeing the David Beckham effect at Milan there is a new fashion for bringing English players to Serie A.
It is not the first time Owen has been linked with Italy, as he was also a target for Juventus and Inter several years ago.
The far cheaper alternative for Genoa is Giuseppe Greco, who already played for the Rossoblu in 2005-06 and 2006-07 in Serie C.
Greco is currently plying his trade at Pisa in Serie B and would appreciate a return to Marassi.
Another international option is 24-year-old Argentine striker Lucas Barrios, now playing for Colo Colo.

Re: Genoa prepare Owen swoop
Does seem somewhat unlikely, but Genoa are a great club with some real quality, its just outside of Italy they aren't respected like they are inside.sparrow wrote:BAGGIO 15 wrote:Genoa are lining up a surprise January bid for England’s Ballon d’Or winner Michael Owen, according to the Italian media.

Re: Genoa prepare Owen swoop
Its not that unlikely, Preziosi has money, Genoa can challenge for CL, they need someone to partner Milito and they are bigger than Newcastle.
Why not??
Why not??
Re: Genoa prepare Owen swoop
Yeah can see alot of people lining up to join Genoa ffs. I have no doubt he will not be at Newcastle next year but to say Genoa are a bigger club is laughable. Can't see him playing in the 3rd best league in the world.Laziale wrote:Its not that unlikely, Preziosi has money, Genoa can challenge for CL, they need someone to partner Milito and they are bigger than Newcastle.

To answer your question about why not, I'd say about 90,000 pounds a week.
Re: Genoa prepare Owen swoop
What makes a big club then?? They have more league titles than Newcastle, they are a real chance to play CL football next season. Newcastle to Genoa is a step up.sparrow wrote:Yeah can see alot of people lining up to join Genoa ffs. His wages would be the only obstacle.
Re: Genoa prepare Owen swoop
We'll agree to disagree. No side outside the top4 has played more Champions League football than Newcastle.Laziale wrote:What makes a big club then?? Genoa is not even close to being on par with Newcastle as a football club and never will be. I'm sure Owen would love to play for a shitty club with a shitty stadium and a handfull of fans just to play 3 Champions League group games.
Who the fuck are Genoa anyway

Re: Genoa prepare Owen swoop
I think the Luigi Ferraris is a much better looking stadium than St. James' Park.
there fans are probably more loyal than Geordies, they certainly have a great curva which gives everyone some fantastic displays.
They share a big rivarly with Sampdoria who are bigger than Sunderland as well
they've won 9 league titles compared to your 4
I'd definitely say Genoa are a bigger club than Newcastle

I would not necessarily call them 'league' titles, but titles nonethelessdelfino_1936 wrote:they've won 9 league titles compared to your 4

Newcastle have been proven to have one of the most loyal fan bases not only in England but THE WORLD. St James' Park also holds 15,000 + more supporters than the Luigi Ferraris and the atmosphere is usually superior to say the least.

Genoa's fans create a fantastic atmopshere and imo Luigi Ferraris looks way better than St. James' Park even though SJP is a nice ground

Re: Genoa prepare Owen swoop
Why do you people always have a stupid debate about England v Italy?
Ok, I always have the Italians back' as well but saying Genoa is a bigger club than Newcastle is stupid.
And that I've heard of Owen gets around about $250k a week, isn't that like the whole squad of Genoa's?

With players like Palladino, Milito..Genoa wouldn't have such a small wage budgetFenerbahçe wrote:Why do you people always have a stupid debate about England v Italy?

I agree $225k a week is stupid for him.Laziale wrote:What makes a big club then?? They have more league titles than Newcastle, they are a real chance to play CL football next season. A fit Michael Owen is worth every penny. Unfortunately he's never fit

Hawkesy has proven with stats that the Geordies aren't as loyal as what they say they are!!!

you talk of the atmosphere at the Marassi like you've actually been there. Agree St. James is better but the atmosphere isn't.
take it from someone whose seen Genoa play live (away at least), their fans are brilliant.
Who cares about the stadium anyway?? If that was the measuring stick Lazio would be bigger than Arsenal, Juventus and Liverpool cause we play at the Olimpico and have one of the world's greatest terraces.

9 titles to 4 and participation in Europe is what its all about
