Reds Women look to nation's capital for first away win
Adelaide United’s Women’s Team will head to the nation’s capital to tackle Canberra United hoping to ‘break its duck’ away from home in Round 5 of the Westfield W-League on Saturday 22 November.
Canberra based Reds W-League striker Stephanie Tokich will go up against the team she trains with during the week.
This weekend’s round of matches marks the half way stage of the 10 round season, The “Ladies in Red” are sitting fifth on the table, but just three points from top placed Queensland Roar.
United’s women went down 3-2 to Perth Glory over in the west in their last outing, and now head to McKellar Park in the ACT to try and secure their first win away from home.
Coach Mike Barnett says the match is a crucial one in the context of his team’s season.
“Our season hangs in the balance this week, with us and Canberra both on the same points eyeing off fourth spot on the table”, Barnett said.
“We’re looking to bounce back from last week’s disappointing loss to Perth Glory and I know we have the potential and the talent to get the right result on Saturday.”
In plotting Canberra United’s downfall, Barnett may also have an inside edge from Reds striker Stephanie Tokich, who resides in Canberra and trains with Canberra United during the week before joining Adelaide for the games.
Racheal Quigley returns for the match against Canberra United.
“Canberra United is a very defence orientated team, which may be a weakness in their attack,” Tokich said.
“This weekend’s game will be personal because we will be playing against the girls I have trained and played with for almost four years, and who I know very well.”
The Reds’ task will be made difficult with three of the team’s regular starting XI out of action, with strikers Victoria Balomenos and Sandra Scalzi and defender Renee Harrison all unavailable.
Balomenos will serve a one match suspension due to an accumulation of too many yellow cards, Scalzi is recovering from hand surgery while Harrison is still not 100 per cent after suffering concussion against the Glory.
Angela Fimmano, Racheal Quigley and new signing Leanne Slater all come into the squad, which will be looking to keep its first clean sheet of the season.
“The inclusion of Angela, Racheal and Leanne will hopefully give us the edge we need this week and I am sure they will come in and do the job for us,” Barnett said.
Saturday’s match against Canberra United kicks off at 3.30pm (ACDT) and will be televised on the ABC.

Re: Adelaide United vs Canberra United
Canberra did really well, there young striker was brilliant, and they have some very good midfielders as well.
Amorim or Wirkus probably best on ground for Adelaide.

Re: Adelaide United vs Canberra United
ugly game
luckyto be 0-0, despite them havin 10!
had a mate at my house watchign it, shes moved here from kent n hasnt seen any womens football in australia. for me to tell her that what we were watching is the highest level in our country was embarrassing almost!
canberra were so so so physical! and some of our girls fist touches were shockers!
but, a draw is better than a loss! well in.

Re: Adelaide United vs Canberra United
What was the Canberra player sent off for?
Commentators didn't know, Robbie Hooker didn't know.....
Very poor refereeing in general. And a very poor match. Why do women try and play a physical, biff-bang, long ball type of game? Are they trying to play like men? Women's football would look better if someone could put their foot on the ball and actually think about what is going on- and then try to play a short passing game. Instead, they scurry around like headless chooks.....

Re: Adelaide United vs Canberra United
apparently she came in with her sprigs raised or something...
ref was pretty average
also i think it was quite evident why players shouldnt train with other teams, tokic was certainly targetted by some canberra players.

Re: Adelaide United vs Canberra United
Wirkus was clearly bog for Adelaide. Alagich second
Disappointing for the girls not to take the 3 points after Canberra went down to 10 women within 10 mins of kick off. Pleasing to finally see a clean sheet, a keepers and defenders delight
Well in girls, a point away from home is always handy esp in trying conditions.
All the best for the game against tards

The very small write up in today's paper probably reflected the calibre and interest in the comp and the game.

It's a new comp, it's up to all the people involved - players, officials, parents, friends, fans, etc to spread the word and get the media interested.SAD GAL wrote:Hmmmmmm

Adelaide United’s Women’s Team has recorded its first clean sheet of the season as they drew 0-0 with Canberra United at McKellar Park in Round 5 of the Westfield W-League.
Adelaide United's Sarah Amorim battling against Sasha McDonnell
Searching for its first away win of the campaign, United’s women were aided by the sending off of Canberra defender Thea Slatyer after just 10 minutes for a dangerous challenge on Reds striker Stephanie Tokich, who resides and trains in Canberra during the week.
However, United could not make their extra woman advantage count, as they failed to find the back of the net despite Donna Cockayne and experienced midfielder Sharon Black both having chances.
The home side were also guilty of not converting their opportunities, Reds goalkeeper Emma Wirkus managing to keep Canberra’s forwards, particularly dangerous striker Ashleigh Sykes at bay.
Reds Coach Mike Barnett said while a winning goal eluded his team, he was pleased to come away with a point away from home against a Canberra side that defeated Melbourne Victory last week and also toppled highly fancied league leaders Queensland Roar.
"I see that as a point gained, given we were the away team," Barnett said.
"These days, teams that go down to ten normally respond because they have to make up the extra number and at the end of the day there were chances at both ends and it was an entertaining game."
The result leave United in fourth spot on the table with half of the season gone.
The Ladies in Red return home for a match against Melbourne Victory at Hindmarsh Stadium on Saturday 29 November.
