Junior fee's
Hi all,
Its that time of the year to bring up the great debate..... Why are Junior fee's so high?
What does you club charge and what do you get in return?
My dealings are with Modbury (Nothing against Modbury just new to this) I cant recall of the top of my head what they charge per year. But Modbury's Juniors dont play at Jet park (They may get 1 or 2 night games) they play at Burragah reserve which is just a local park. Also Modbury's trials finished on Sunday on Tuesday we recieved a letter to say both boys had made it BUT they required a $150.00 deposit paid by this Sunday. WHY? the season isnt until 2009 theres a few months before they start training. I just wanted to know if its just revenue raising for the Club. Does this happen anywhere else? Moneys tight at the moment coming to Xmas, Fuel prices etc we have 2 kids playing at the club we "May" be looking at paying up to $1000 for them both to play.

Re: Junior fee's
Why are Juniors playing fees so high? Have you checked the fees of some other sports lately - try netball or basketball and make a comparison against soccer - where pre-season starts in mid January and the playing season finishes in September - that's an 8 month season! So when you break it down to twice-weekly training and a match every week, the cost is actually pretty reasonable. And maybe you don't know that there are some sports where the parents have to pay an entry fee just to get in and watch their kids play! So believe me, soccer is not that expensive.
Reality is that Clubs affiliated with the FFSA are slugged with heavy costs, especially the Super League Clubs. If you don't want your kids to play for a Super League club like Modbury, take them to a State League Club like Playford - which has a great setup and fees are a bit cheaper at about $460. Also, consider Campbelltown where the entire 2009 playing fee was required to be paid up front two weeks ago. Or go to Croydon where players had to pay their deposit on the last day of trial. And what about those clubs who are charging players just to come out and trial for them?
It's easy to ask why clubs want money up front - but the answer is simple. Too many clubs have been burned by players who sign up and then leave before the season commences. What does the club do with a shirt with the kids name on the back then?
If you took your kids out to trial at Modbury then you would have been given the Information handout which gave a complete breakdown of costs. Obviously you didn't bother to take the time to read it, because one of the first things you would have discovered is you get $100 off for having a second player at the club.
As for the number of matches played at Jet Park - well in the 2008 season all the younger teams got to play there at least three times. But that is dependant on the opposition wanting to play a match under lights on a Friday night - not all are in agreement. The older Modbury teams are based at Jet Park and don't even play at Burragah. Most clubs use local parks or council grounds Para Hills, Enfield Croydon in fact nearly all clubs would be using council grounds which wihtout them your costs would be double!. This also applys to the E&D clubs TTG, Mod Vista etc they also do nto incur FFSA & superleague costs.
Modbury is looking forward to a very positive year of junior soccer in 2009, and with only one team in every age group in the JPL, it can hardly be accused of simply 'revenue raising'.

Re: Junior fee's
I see the Jets are only charging $120 for involvement of SSG's U6/7/8 which is more than reasonable to charge for children that are just starting off in our great game.
well done to the JETS! good luck with that as I see its a new direction for the club
Re: Junior fee's
My 5 yo is costing me $500 for dancing classes and then theres the other clothing costs etc on top of that so yes when you compare it to other things its not that bad

Re: Junior fee's
It costs me $10 for one hour swimming lesson a week over 20 week period for my daughter to be in a class. Total $200 then you have goggles, and swimming gear on top of that.
It costs me $400 for my son to play at a jpl club a season. This includes uniforms. My son spends about 3-4 hours a week training, than another 2 hours on match day. over a 22 week season that equates to around 110 hours. Then there is the preseason training of say 6 weeks, so another 25 hours.
$400 (which includes training and playing uniforms) for around 130 hours a year, equates to around $2.96 an hour (including uniform).
$2.96 an hour is not much for a "baby sitting service" to get the kids out of the house and out being active rather then sitting at home and playing with their computers.
As a parent, i do not complain about soccer fees too much, it is more expensive if i took my son to karate or swimming or piano lessons!

Re: Junior fee's
yes if you look at it in total it might seem a lot but if you break it down and look at whats involved and the costs involved I think you will find its reasonable in most cases.
you can pay $15 for an hour and half football academy $5/half hour not bad but per year thats $780.
But these days dollars are tight so I do see the problems for people to afford childrens activities at times.

any person paying more than $200.00 to play soccer is being ripped off....compare it to team sports like Aussie rules
not your individual sports.
Re: Junior fee's
well theres a lot getting ripped off then, maybe they see it as specialised coaching to better develope there child not to say what clubs offer is bad but not what they are looking for, for there child.
Re: Junior fee's
What you are trying to say is it cost less to play football (aussie Rules) try agian just asked 4 people here they all pay over $300 plus weekly money - every sport is the same break it down to hours spent it is worth it try some other teams paying close to $100, dont even ask about basketball where even spectators/parents pay.
When you were on the committee of your club and you knew the running costs what did you set your fees at and which sport was it

Re: Junior fee's
AFL I believe is reasonably low but I think you will find that other team sport charges are on the high side ie baseball basketball

OK thanks for the reply mate BUT I think you need to get of your high horse and pull your head in, I found your reply to be on the verge of aggressive hardly what a club like modbury needs at the moment. If you read the top of my post I said i was new to this and i didnt have the Info on me at the moment. So why say I "Obviously didnt take time to read it" should i make it a bit clearer then answer the following questions
Whats the difference between Modburys Juniors and Playfords Juniors? The Modbury seniors are in the Super League and Playford are in the State League. How does that affect Juniors?
Why do you need the $150 per player by Sunday? And dont give me the name on the back of the shirt excuse because the sooner clubs buy 15 strips with no names on the back and someone washes them every week and brings them to every game the sooner $100 can get taken off the fee's. The answer is simple REVENUE RAISING! Dont stress I understand alot of clubs do this not just Modbury.
Playing at Burragah is 2nd rate, would the 1st team train there? I understand they are doing it up a bit (sprinklers etc) But how about some decent goals and nets.
In fact can you break down the junior registration at Modbury, where what part of it goes to?
From a simple question on an open forum you havent done your club any justice with your reply.

Re: Junior fee's
Not sure what you mean by "a club like Modbury needs at the moment" don't think I am on my high horse at all mate, but people that purport to be new to a club, then get on a public forum and challenge the way a club operates is just having a lend.
If you are genuinely new to the club I'm sure the committee would welcome some fresh new ideas and would appreciate you putting your hand up to the join it's overworked Junior Committee this year. They will be asking all parents on Sunday, so get ready to put your hand up because actions speak louder than words.
What is the difference between Super League Clubs and State League clubs? The cost of affiliating with the FFSA mate (aprox $8,000) - and that cost is borne equally by every player at Modbury, not just the juniors. Playford is a great club and like Modbury has a long history. Their junior fees are maybe $30-$40 a year less than Modbury. But Playford and Modbury don't have the multiple number of teams per age group like Para Hills, Campbelltown and others - so who is revenue raising mate?
Why must you pay $150 by Sunday? - so the club can order and pay for the strips your sons will be playing in mate. And ask your kids whether they want their own shirt with their own name on the back, or just get doled a club shirt to play in for the season. I think you already know the answer to that one.
And the First team have trained at Burragah on occasions, as do the under 19s every week, and the Ressies some weeks.
As for the goals, well they are owned by the Council so you'd better talk to them about that, and the goal nets were bought new this season and will be replaced for next year.
Want a breakdown of club costs? Then read the handout you were given on Sunday, can't be any more simpler than that.
Catch you Sunday at registration day where you can see the work by very few volunteers and ask as many questions as you like and be provided with answers to those questions.

Re: Junior fee's
Blimey charlie mate, you have got the same answers for all questions. Join the committee. I dont want to be on the committee I want to know why the fee's are high and what they include. I say its not what Modbury want at the moment for several reasons BUT I wont put them on here as I may get asked to join the Senior Committee.
I am not challenging the way the club is being run at all.
When was the last time you asked a "Parent" of a player would you rather just have a set of strips or have a name on the back, kids grow they will need to be replaced when they grow so i dont see the logic behind it, apart from an extra $80 to the fee's.
look I could go on for ages with this topic, you will never win as at the end of the day because its blatant "revenue raising" and I will never win because I dont want to join the committee!
Looking forward to a good competative year for Modbury this year, I hope they do well.

Re: Junior fee's
MMMMMMMM Modbury Jets, 7 Teams from U11-U17's at an average of 14 players per team = 98 players, $500 per player =$49,000. $300 per team for playing tops with name on = $2,100 also take into account the ffsa levy previously mentioned $8000 total left is $38,900. $150 per player by rego day $14,700. Maybe the first team players will get their player payments that was promised to us for 2008 season after all.............

Re: Junior fee's
think you will find the ffsa levy for super league is $18,000 approximately. The $8,000 stated was the difference between Modbury and Playford (eg Super League = $18,000; State League = $10,000) roughly there abouts!! Don't forget all the other costs involved in running a super league club, like paying their senior players. If there is no money or not enough money coming in, how can it go out (paying players)?
Re: Junior fee's
Ok true and I stand corrected..... As for other monies coming in Modbury Jets have one of the best bar takings in the state and that is without meals and pokies lol not to mention sponsors or maybe lack of.........Anyway ho hum

if you would like your children to take part in the world game deal with the costs of it
the costs are not that much money in hindsight compared to other sports as many others have stated in this thread
i know money doesnt go far these days and being a tightass is needed in some circumstances
but when it comes to sports and your children playing and enjoying themselves just deal with it
so what if your children get their own shirt with their name on it, it will be a memory for them when they grow up and appreciate that they were able to play a sport they wanted to.
for $500 id be pretty happy if my son got a kit, coaching twice a week, and a decent facility to train on, let alone playing games on the weekend and enjoying themselves
really it is a small price to pay
wake up and realise that not everyone can afford the costs of junior soccer for their kids and be grateful you can give your kids the opportunity.

okay....
point one....deal with the costs of it? obviously you have the money TO be able to deal with it, don't put down those who are struggling to
point two....I don't think you do realise how little money does go these days, and believe me some people have to be a tightass every day of their lives
point three...yes, how I would love to have a named kit for my son, and I appreciate the fact that he will get (hopefully!) high quality coaching on great facilities BUT..as a single mum, how do I come up with $500 a week? How do I explain when my son comes home from training with the "fees due" paper, that I've got to pay the electricity bill next week and can't afford to pay his fees by Sunday, therefore he can't play.
point four...it certainly is not a small price to pay, and you're living in a rich man's world if you think it is.
The point I think I'm trying to make here, is that football should be available to all those kids who love and want to play every week, not just for those elite who drive to the ground in their brand new Mercedes four wheel drives. I am a single mum, who would do anything to fulfill my children's dreams. I cut corners every week so that my children can enjoy the sport that they love, but hey, let's try to make it easier for those who can't afford these high fees hey? What about offering a discount if they take a second hand kit from last season? Have a noticeboard in your club advising of secondhand gear for sale - kids are always growing out of their shoes before their worn out. What about offering a discount if the parent/s volunteer to do some work around the club? What about offering a payment plan for those who cannot come up with $500 straight up.
Hey, I'm only new to this football thing, but my eldest played hockey for many years and they had these plans in place, otherwise they wouldn't have fielded many junior sides each season.....just a few thoughts..

Where do you get your tops with names on them?sir wrote:. $300 per team for playing tops with name on = $2,100

Re: Junior fee's
soccer fees are not high at all.
at our club you get soccer ball, you get training tops,
training shorts training socks playing socks, playing shorts,
playing strip that you keep and tracksuits full gear.
now if that is exspensive go out and buy all that gear and see,
how much it will cost you plus rego fees.
my son played football and for $120 all you got was rego fees,
then you had to buy the gear.

Re: Junior fee's
would think 4 months interest before pre season would help the cause. not high fees but would have thought LRO stated he was only new? sounds like touchy people down at modbury?

Re: Junior fee's
I am not sure (honestly) what the fees were last year and what they are this year (at Modbury). Yes I can ask a few people who would tell me, but I am 100% sure any rise will be less than inflation, I would bet my last $ that the cost to the club of food, supplies, equipment etc will have gone up a lot more in the past 12 months.
