who were benestare bears ?

Post by legga »

Maybe someone can enlighten me. I have got my hands on an old Downs mag from 1992 and of course the Swannsong printed this up and I was looking at all the league tables and in Saturday div 2 there is a team called the Benestare Bears. Who and where did they come from? Not a bad read with Adelaide Eagles, Rostrevor and Tubemakers in sunday div 1. Social Security had a team I think they changed their name to Eliz Vale. They are in a league with mannum, murray bridge and some team called the casino aces - div 8. I will rattle off some of the weirder ones if anyone can enlighten. post tel, 16th ad regiment, adelaide acropolis, the aviation institute, o,s lusitanos, p.a.r.s and w.s.calabria i remember playing against calabria. But who are the Benestare Bears????. Hellenic where top in div 1 sat and Para Hills East are top in div 1 sunday..
There is no I in team, but there is a u in suck...

Post-Tel are one of the oldest teams in the comp, and merged with Payneham in recent years to form Payneham Post-tel United.

Benestare is a town in Calabria, Italy so may have been formed by people that emigrated from there??

I love reading all these old names despite not being in Adelaide back then. I remember in Perth there used to be a club MRD Roadrunners (main roads) so to think social security had a team is somewhat amusing.

Can't help with Benestare Bears but that would've been Adelaide Eagles first year in Div 1. PHE won the league easily that year.

I played for the Eagles that year and for the next few years in goal and still remember a Kevin Booth back heeled goal in a 7-1 loss. Eagles played at Regency Park and had the best playing surface in the league. Also had some of the best team discussions going, nearly fisticuffs in the change room at times that year.

Tubemakers I believe were relegated that year and disappeared thereafter.

Correct. They also used to play at TK Shutter Reserve when no SASF club was interested in using it and were coached for a few years by Michael Talladira (Carlo's brother). A few of the guys went there from Unley United so they re-used the sky blue strip until they got an old Adelaide City hand-me-down from Charlie Capogreco's son (Gus).

I think I've still got a copy of every one of those Downs newsletters/mags I did back in 1991-1992 (in the shed), I must have had a lot of time on my hands back then.
Even found a pewter tankard I received from the SAASL in appreciation.
I've also got some old cassette tapes with recordings of the Amateur Soccer (Football) radio show that Geoff Murch and Dave Brandon used to host (and copies of the match reports and league tables I faxed to them).
On Benestare Bears, they began back in 1990 and shared TK Shutter Reserve with Enfield Tricolore (formally Enfield Hawks), in 1993 they became Benestare Reggio Calabria playing in Sat Division 1 at TK Shutter until 1994. I think they struggled in 1994 and Rodos (in the 1995 yearbook they are listed as Benestare RC/Rodos and the players have Greek rather than Calabrian names) took over their fixtures
In 1995 Benestare Reggio Calabria and Norwood dissappeared and a team called Metro Knights (Sicilia SSC) emerged at TK Shutter Reserve with Elio Marusic as coach In 1999 I think Metro Knight went into the Federation league.
I think in some way there might be a link (mainly due to the ground and Italian background )

I also remember the Downs playing Casino Aces in the Cup.
Their ground was behind the Adelaide Swimming Centre , I think Dreams Plus play there now.

This is testing the memory but here goes:
Benestare Bears, was a team that was funded by, I think back then, not sure if they are still around the
"Benestare Club", as someone else mentioned a region from Calabria Italy. The original committee, consisted of Vince, Nando, Gus (Charlie Capagreco's son), Joe & Pep. Michael Taladira coached the team for a period of time. I even believe Carlo Taladira (ex-Adelaide City) made a couple of guest appearance games for the club. The background where mainly Italians, and they did play at TK Shutter reserve, which they shared with Enfield Tri-colore. A lot of the players, did the orange coats for Adelaide City back then, through Gus's contacts.

Someone can correct me if I am wrong but, they did not merge with Adelaide Rodos, these where two seperate clubs back then and always where. They did not form Metro Knights, these guys may have even started before the end of Benestare Bears and may have even played at the ground on Sundays, during the Benestare Bear days.

I believe the Football Club folded due to financial reasons. They where funded by an Italian community club, so they should have been financially viable, but rumours (only rumours) say that the finances where either run by someone very inexperienced or someone was putting there hand in the cookie jar. When Benestare Club, withdrew there funding the club folded soon after. :(

I wasn't saying that they merged with Rodos but that Rodos took their position in the league and played as Benestare RC/Rodos.
And as I stated the Metro started the year after Benestare dissappeared from the league (according to SAASL Year Books).

Dave went there in my last year at the Eagles (got sick of not starting at PHE but never became a regular starter that year at the Eagles due to the strength of that side). That was the year (1994?) where we beat PHE 0-1 up at the East to go above them on the table and then lost to a dodgy penalty against Inter the week after. We thought that we ended PHE title charge with that win but you would fondly remember winning the title on the last day of the season.

ahhh Adelaide Rodos... played there back in 1992 in Sat Div 1... the late Evan Trandakis (sp?) (played professionally in Greece) was coach... Remember the derbies against Hellenic... even Kokkinopoliitis was guest player for Hellenic... Fun times :D

"Social Security changed their name to Elizabeth Vale..."!

Sounds highly unlikely...!

Woodside had a team in SAASL from 1972... back in those days there were many army units stationed there, including 3RAR and 16AD. As the base was downsized, 16AD ended up as the last unit.

Remember playing Feds for Enfield v Blackwood in a massive promotion battle under Dave Baker on Saturday then playing for Blackwood's amateur side helping them win the championship (div 4 i think) v Woodside on the Sunday, Helping out a great mate (DAVE PEAKE "RIP")......great night had by all at that shed at Blackwood......lucky Peakie was my boss back then.....very messy Monday at Brambles Cranes...great times...great memories :D
