Mercy Rule ????
Now I just thought Id put up this topic for discussion..
After witnessing 3 games on weekend where the score was 6-0, 12-0, 13-1.. i rkn a mercy rule should be imposed.. now i dont necessarily agree wif it but i think it needs to be done..
and especially after hearing that ad city beat beverly 30-0 thats ridiculous.. whos going to learn anything from that ??
opinions ?

Re: Mercy Rule ????
Mercy rule? Isn't it the ffsa which rules the way the cup rounds are drawn? No team is going to have mercy for any side when it comes down to a cup game. Sorry, but I have to agree with rabbit.

Re: Mercy Rule ????
Dunno about a mercy rule. It's obvious you're getting thumped so the score is immaterial - you usually don't notice the score after 3-0 down anyway (btdt dammit). However, having a game stopped is just rubbing it in, takes it from a drubbing to a public humiliation.
Maybe once a team is 10 goals up it should have to shout the opposition to something at the canteen afterwards

It does bring out the character in some players though and fair play to the team we played as they never really gave up. Extremely sporting after the game too. Something other teams could learn from. Well done and good luck for the rest of the season.

Kids will learn from it I remember in U13's we lost 17-1 but later in the year we played exactly the same squad and we only lost 3-1 and most there goals were bullshit as a parent was the ref. But we did turn the score around because of a positive attitude our coach imposed and the confidence we had in redeeming ourselves.

i cant understand how you lose 30-0. id be questioning what those players have been learning in previous 6 years and by what sort of coachesmattieg1200 wrote:Now I just thought Id put up this topic for discussion..

Re: Mercy Rule ????
one goal every 2.66 mins isn't bad but then AC should have got that isn't it beverley's first year in?
but if they had taken teddles thought of the canteen fixing the boys up with 1 goal per player then the whole team and spectators could have been served

30-0 is a disgrace !!!! AC coach should be shot.
After about 10, should have played with 1 player short, if the goals kept coming, then taken another off. Would have helped both team to learn, isnt that what we as coaches are supposed to be doing ????
What would have his players learnt this game, how to humiliate another team ???? He has probably scarred the Beverly boys for life, some will probably never want to play again !!!

Re: Mercy Rule ????
Agree that the game is usually gone by 7-0ish but taking a players off
not really.
try the rotation of the subs like this . . . .
as each sub is put on or comes off you tell them that the only goals you are allowed to score are from outside the box or headers.
Break the rule and your off.
Taking players off only deprives players of pitch time and reduces their involvement in the game.
And yes this is only in a non-league situation.
IMEOA
But 30-0, that where the coach needs to be spoken to, but hey, i'm sure the parents views would be interesting

Re: Mercy Rule ????
I think you're being a bit hard on the AC coach. We don't know what he did on the day, maybe he started rotating his players around the pitch to give them experience in different positions. In any case, it's not up to him to change the playing conditions, to do so could easily been as arrogance on his part.
Re: Mercy Rule ????
I was at this game and we must put the match in perspective. The Beverley Lions team had started with only 10 players and had played the complete 80min with the ten players even though some were carrying injuries by the end of the game. Our boys were feeling down but the odds were against them at the start and they were not going to give up regardless of the out come. We had spoken to the boys at the end of the game and they all were feeling down but had taken some good out of the game as a team bonding exercise. They all seemed happy enough to put the game behind them and to get on with the real challenge of do well in there own group being the C grade. The opposing team must look hard at them self’s and ask them self’s what they had actually accomplished by this result other than giving there own team / club a bad report with regards to sportsmanship. Not only do there own coaching staff have to look at the type of comments they used to encourage there players to defeat the BLFC with such a huge number but also there practice of SMOKING in the dug out. Lets all be reminded that this is a SMOKE FREE game and this particular person should no longer be allowed in a dugout again.Zeljko Jurin wrote:30-0 is a disgrace !!!! AC coach should be shot.

Re: Mercy Rule ????
I do not believe we need such a rule as in my opinion, the majority of coaches out their coaching in the junior grade would never allow there own club / team to demoralise an opposition team like that. I do believe that 98% of the coaches out there have got pride in their coaching abilities and would not encourage a score like that as AC have done.

Thank you Grouch,
there is no point in speculating on the forum as to outcomes but as you were there it puts it all into perspective.
Well done to your lads anyway

Re: Mercy Rule ????
When you're playing a cup round, obviously a stronger team and up ten goals max what's wrong with throwing the defenders - including the goal keeper - up forward and limiting your normal midfielders and forwards to the defensive half.
Play for possession is another option - no shots on goal just keep the ball off the other team or introduce limited touches even down to one touch at least that way the winning team will develop also and the losing team will have a better chance of becoming competitive.

Re: Mercy Rule ????
coaches in cup games should look at the teams they've drawn and have a game plan to reduce the scoreline. i saw a belting on the weekend and the coach on the team that got well beaten played with 2 strikers the whole game!should have played 5 at the back 5 in the midfield, they would have lost but at least the scoreline would have been under 10. coaches need to be realistic in the early round of the cup

Re: Mercy Rule ????
think off it the other way for the loosing side as well which can be a great experience for the boys.
why hold them into a position thats not working or where the teams better players are working harder to hold the attacks, move them out and leave the lesser players to have a session to learn from the better opponents.
it won't help the confidence but thats when the coach can come in and give the positives even when loosing.
