Lisa De Vanna named in FIFA World Cup al-star team

Post by admin »

Matildas striker Lisa De Vanna has been in the FIFA all-star team following the conclusion of the 2007 FIFA Women's World Cup overnight.

The 22-year-old is one of 16 players named by the FIFA Technical Study Group based on performances throughout the tournament. De Vanna joins an elite list of four forwards which also comprises Brazilian duo Marta and Cristiane, plus German World Cup winning captain Birgit Prinz, with the trio also named as the best three players at the tournament to whom the Golden Ball award is made.

The Perth-based De Vanna scored four goals in the Matildas' historic run to the quarter finals despite being used as a substitute in three of the team's four matches.

Australia's quarter final exit saw the Matildas finish the tournament ranked sixth behind the four semi finalists, and also China who earned more points over the course of the tournament.

Meanwhile, the Matildas have been voted into fifth place on fifa.com as the tournament's 'Most Entertaining Team', behind finalists Brazil and Germany, traditional powerhouse USA and host nation China.

Voting will close tomorrow for the website's 'Goal of the Tournament' award with De Vanna's spectacular strike against Norway and Heather Garriock's headed goal against Ghana two of ten goals in the running for the award.
