Australia have secured a dramatic 1-1 draw against former world champions and world number four Norway to move closer to a quarter final berth at the 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cup in China.
Half time substitute Lisa De Vanna scored one of the goals of the tournament to equalize with seven minutes remaining, following on from her two goal haul when she again came off the bench in the Matildas 4-1 win over Ghana on Wednesday. The goal elevated the Perth-based striker to second on the goalscorers tally behind only Brazil’s Marta who has four goals.
The match was played in front of a boisterous crowd of 33,835 at the Dragon Stadium in Hangzhou.
Norway scored in just the fifth minute with Ragnhild Gulbrandsen firing past Australian goalkeeper Melissa Barbieri from close range. Melbournian Barbieri was making her 50th appearance for Australia and in the process became the Matildas most capped goalkeeper.
Norway, the top seeded nation in the group, won the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 1995 as well as the gold medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
Australia now require a point out of their last group match against Canada in Chengdu on Wednesday to secure a first ever quarter final berth in the fourth tournament appearance for the Matildas.
Australian midfielder Heather Garriock was named by FIFA as player of the match.

It was good to watch, but the commentary was dreadful. David Basheer has the personality of a turnip and knows the game as well as a peanut.malvernfox wrote:Thankyou to SBS for televising the match.
What a great job they do for soccer in Australia
And his co-host, yeah, definately, absolutely, certainly... she just agreed with all his dribble on everything.
