Neill Tells Australia To 'Remember Italy'
Australian star Lucas Neill has told fans Down Under that they should remember Italy in 2006 and not be too concerned about the team’s disappointing Asian Cup opener.
In Bangkok on Sunday, only a last-minute equalizer from Tim Cahill earned the below-par tournament favourites a 1-1 draw with Oman.
Criticism has been fierce in Australia but Neill believes that the example that Italy set a year ago is a good one to follow.
"Italy started the tournament badly at the World Cup but they ended up winning it, and it's not the team that starts fastest, it's the team that's there at the final," said Neill.
Australia can’t afford a similar performance against Iraq on Friday in Bangkok.
"This is a massive game and that's all we're thinking about," said Neill.
"A good 90 minutes, hope to score a goal and not concede one and if we get the win, we're in a great position to move to the next round."
"If we lose, we're going to have to do it the hard way and rely on other people. We don't want to have our tournament in somebody else's hands."
"Now is our opportunity to correct the first result and get the three points."
I don't understand. Italy gained 7 points in the group stages and finished first. Beat Ghana and Czechs pretty convincingly. Minor slip-up against USA but they played well in all games.
