R.I.P Alan.
When I was a kid living in England he was one of my heroes. I played a high standard of soccer in London and was a regular in the team. However, I didn't get picked for the school team as the teacher thought I was too small so I wrote to Alan telling him of my plight and asked what he thought. His return words were simple but I've never forgotten them. On the back of a signed photo he wrote: "If you're good enough, you're big enough" Thanx for the memories Alan.

He came to Australia some time back in the eighties when which I was fortunate enough to be a part of a junior team that he gave a training session to. Sad to hear of his departure.

Alan was a great player, one of the best midfielders England has ever produced.

He had the heart of a lion and was extremely difficult to dispossess - very strong on the ball. He was the last of the great dribbling 'inside-forwards'.

I played against him once in a pre-season friendly and he almost single-handedly destroyed our defence. He was so fast and tricky that defenders never knew what he was going to do.

RIP Alan Ball - a giant of a man despite his small stature, a hero to all us smaller players.
