Round 5 WPL

Post by Worthless Gobemouche »

Fulham United vs Away West Adelaide
3:00 PM / Sun 3 May
Collins Reserve

Metro United WFC vs Sturt Marion
3:00 PM / Sun 3 May
Lindblom Park

Adelaide University vs Para Hills Knights
3:00 PM / Sun 3 May
University Ovals

Cumberland United vs FFSA U14/15 Girls
3:00 PM / Sun 3 May
Women's Memorial Playing Fields

Adelaide City BYE

With the league well under way, Round 5 throws up a few interesting games.

West Adelaide visit an improved Fulham and I suspect that the 2 heavy defeats suffered by Fulham last year won't be repeated. West are a strong and on paper capable side, but would be needing to take all 3 points. Fulham on the other hand would be seeing this game as an opportunity to move up a spot.

Metro welcome Sturt Marion to Lindblom Park and I suspect that it will be a long drive home for the southerners. Metro are gifted with excellent depth and will be too strong for an inconsistent Sturt side.

The Uni and Para Hills Knights game is a hard one to pick. No having seen Para Hills this year, it's difficult to comment but Para's defence will have to be on top of their game if they are to keep Uni's Chilean under graduate quiet. Not an easy task given her debut outing against Sturt.

Finally Cumberland have a good opportunity to open their seasons point account against the young and struggling FFSA side. The big Cumberland pitch could suit the FFSA side, but I suspect at the end of 90 minutes, Cumberland will have seen of the youthful challengers.

Anybody have any observations about the Sturt-Metro game? Bit of an upset.

Sturt were all class this afternoon. Metro had a few good opportunities but Sturt were too good and dominated, it was a well deserved victory for the Sturt side. If you watched the game you wouldn't have thought it was an upset with Sturt playing consistently better football than metro. Sturt were out to prove themselves and they sure did.

The metro keeper let two high balls in , considering her height , not good.

Well done to all the winners over the weekend, in particular to Sturt whose trip home wouldnt have been aslong as this scribe suspected. A quick check of the Sportingpule site, gives the impression that all games were close tight affairs and it was good to hear that the FFSA side were much more competetive this weekend.

West Adelaide might feel as if they let 3 points slip away but Fulham have improved massively over last year and a win was well deserved. Perhaps JS might beable to shed a little more light on Fulhams recent turn around ?

Would also be interesting to hear a report from the Para / Uni 3 all draw.

Fulham is definitely in better shape this year than the last couple- Max has been able to bring some girls back into the game- older, wiser, experienced players who are really making a difference. Also the girls who have stuck with the program are really stepping up as well. Yesterday was a pretty even match, although Fulham was playing more positively in the first half. Second half got a bit more intense as WA tried to work their way back into the game. First goal came from a turnover in the midfield followed by some nice combination play allowing Izzy Hodgson to score. Just after the half, Renee Pantellis (a talented player who is always dangerous in front of goal) answered with a very nice one-on-one with the keeper. Winning goal came from Sarah Baker's through ball to Lou Tianni, a Fulham stalwart- the super sub yesterday.
