B's referees......... Where are they?

Post by nico »

Title says it all.

4 rounds so far this year and our B's have had one official ref. What are we paying our registration, affiliation and REFEREES LEVY fees for?

Are other clubs having the same problem? Obviously 3 others are.

Which division are you talking about. No other division but div 1 reserves get a ref. There is nothing worse than not having a ref. altough they are all very very average in the amatuer league they have a bit more authority than anyone from the home team.

Div 2 Sat.

It's a joke! Seeing that the B's game starts the day, any crap that ignites in the first game due to poor refereeing tends to flow over into the A's game and unnecessary bookings are given out by a ref trying to restore a sense of calm.

It's not reasonable to expect a partisan supporter who's not trained, or paid for that matter, to be able to impartially referee a game of football in which his team is playing.

With the greatest of respect there are better leagues than Division 2 Saturday (although there are some great teams there now) that don't get official referee's for B's games - better to try and get a retired ref to do it, works well for many clubs

According to a post Hahndorf's forum, no referees will be available for any of the Saturday Division 1 Reserves fixtures.

there should not be a problem. All Clubs are supposed to nominate one person to attend a Referee "course". Club Referees - complete with with lovely Umbro shirt and yellow/red cards in pocket, which are issued at the course - are then supposed to be available in the absence of match officials. Of course, this would never stop anyone from putting the shirt on, going for a leisurely stroll, and awarding penalty kicks in favour of the home side from the other end of the park....now this would never happen, would it?

Rob, exactly my point.

Also it's pretty unfair that the players who pay just as much to have a kick as the A's have to cop this rubbish.

Would have been nice to have been told all of this prior to the season commencing, when in fact we were assured just the opposite would be the case.

You must remember that there is a major shortage of referees, and the SAASL has tried various avenues of recruitment over the past couple of years.

At the end of the day, the reserves results do not count for anything. Be happy you get an official A's ref, and be done with it. Just remember you have to play each time twice... a lesson that Bosna learnt the hard way last year.

Unless you have a good idea to solve the ref shortages...?

Maybe you lads should put your hand up to become a ref? fact is there is not enough refs around to do ressies games. They do C grade and 1st team as that gives them enough time to get from one ground to another after the C game. Be thankful we get them for our first teams, at the end of the day thats the games that get promotion/relagation.

Wouldn't it make more sense if they did A's and B's, perhaps start B's slightly earlier so they can get a break - always suprised me that C's which is mostly more social for older players or those that don't or can't train, get a ref, when B's which is by definition a better standard (yes I know not always but generally) don't

Great minds think alike BPBC!

Knight7, I brought this up with the SAASL a couple of years back and they made a good point. If there is trouble in the B's game due to the ref, can you imagine the A's game?!?

Your on fire Aldo

Add to that the fact the ref would most likely want a wee break before doing another 90 minute shift. Some of them do actually do a bit of hard work out there (Some, definately not all)

Aldo, I think it's almost the opposite - i.e. Bad "home ref" gets everyone fired up, then poor official ref walks into a nightmare. Also BPBC - agree about the rest, that's why I said they could alter times by 15 minutes. Anyway looks like this one has already tried and failed

I'm with Wanderers.

BPBC & Aldo, you make a good point and I'm not claiming to have all the answers, if any of them. But I think the more of us that acknowledge that there is a problem the more heads can get around finding a solution.

As I said before though re: clubs presenting their own people for a referees course, there is no way that the opposing club will stomach this, unless they come away with a win. The only solution is to roster these volunteers to ref at another venue where two clubs with which they have no association are playing. This then brings up the problem that not too many people are going to come out on a Saturday to help out clubs that they have no connection with.

I used to be with West Beach in Sun Div 3, about 5/6 years ago and it was very rare that a B's ref was not available. Has the number of refs dropped that much or are there more games going on these days?

Yes nico, the number of refs has halved over the past 5 years! This has been a widely debated topic among the SAASL clubs & officials, but there is no easy solution.

They tried to recruit from the uni's, etc but they ended up with students with no idea trying to make a quick buck on the weekends. One guy we had was worse than a biased home referee!

Saturday Clubs should team up with Sunday clubs. Each club nominates someone to do a ref course. The Sunday club referees that Saturday club and the Saturday referees the Sunday. If the Amateur league does this it has the potential to work, the potential refs would be paid and there would be less biast decisions being made.

I just got my ref certificate and im refing College Boys on Saturdays because its much more peacful than Amateurs. Its better than being potentially abused by players who think they know every rule in the book.

I have also been asked to ref my C team on Sunday mornings and then play A's in the afternoon. C game standard is poor and the result means little to nothing. The cheating occurs in clubs when there team are playing in more important games. The reserve cup is going to be an issue. As a uni student I can do with the cash, but its not going to be the same at every club.

Also, your club saves about $1000 a year if someone refs from within the club

Gamoto understand it's the way it is, but surely if the Saturday collegiate league, which pays refs less, can organise refs for both games then so can this supposedly more highly regarded league.

We're living with it at the moment, but it's incidents like Saturday when one of our players suffered a facial fracture from a king hit off the ball that you begin to question whether its worth fronting for games with no official ref. As was mentioned before, the B's don't determine promotion/relegation etc. its just a training ground for potential A's players and guys that want a kick and to be part of a team. When does the point arrive though when these players say "Stuff this it's not worth it" and we end up losing a lot of potentially good players, good guys and a source of revenue that keeps clubs like ours and leagues like these alive?

Its B grade amateurs, even if there was an official ref your mate still probably would have walked away with a fractured face.

Nico, bad luck about your mate, thats not on, but the outcome probably would've been the same had there been an official ref.

That's another thing I have noticed since I came to Adelaide. I haven't seen one official referee for a B game yet. Kick off times here for A's and B's are too close for it to be done here, but in other states a referee would do a C game somewhere, a B game somewhere else close by, and the B and C referees would run lines in an A game.

Returning to amateurs after playing inthe collegiate league since 2000 the number of refs around is disgraceful. I use to read how the coll. lg. was of poor standard and soft (which was not true).but to the leagues credit we always had an official ref for all our games....even c grade known as A2.Some thing has to be done or amateur league soccer is only going to become worst. refs at coll. lg. games would say they would rather ref coll.games than am.because it was so called calmer ...I think we should all get together and work something out for sake of the game we all love....

Double sided sword here guys.

The abuse that we hand out to refs doesnt help, i have done it but try not to now. Would you give up your sunday to be ridiculed and threatened by us morons.

Club refs, thats a hard one too. You cant keep everyone happy, you make a call against the visitors and they call you a cheat. On the other hand you make a call against your own team and they spit the dummy.

It takes a very strong character to ref a game and take all the crap at the same time. Maybe clubs should have a code of conduct that they stick by ensuring safe passage for the officials.

Guys some of you should try doing it and be honest and fair it can be rewarding but very frustrating. Taking abuse from the village idiots without giving it back is hard, me i just give it back.
