Harry the greatest? What do you think
HARRY Kewell has been named Australia's greatest ever footballer at a gala ceremony in Sydney.
Kewell was awarded the honour following a long-running process involving fans, players and pundits.
The Greatest Ever Australian Footballer awards also named the nation's greatest players by position and Kewell was joined by several teammates of the Socceroos' "golden generation" in the greatest ever Australian team.
Current No.1 Mark Schwarzer was named Australia's best goalkeeper while captain Lucas Neill, Everton star Tim Cahill and retired defender Craig Moore were also named in the greatest side.
All featured at the last two FIFA World Cup finals while Mark Viduka, who competed at the 2006 World Cup in Germany, was also included.
The late Johnny Warren, striker Ray Baartz, Alan Davidson, Ned Zelic and Joe Marston - the first Australian to compete in an FA Cup final - were also in the team but there were no members that represented the Socceroos prior to 1947.
Kewell is in the UK and was not present to collect the honour in front of many current and former greats but described it as "an incredible honour".
"I'm humbled by the award and very grateful, especially given that the public have had such a say in the final result and the number of great footballers this country has produced over the years," the former Leeds, Liverpool, Galatasaray and Melbourne Victory attacker said.
"To be named amongst such great players in the greatest ever Australian team, both past and current, is something I will never forget."
More than 15,000 public votes were cast during the selection process, while a panel of current and former players, administrators and commentators also helped determine the winner.
Matildas captain Cheryl Salisbury was named Australia's greatest female player while the greatest coach went to Dutchman Guus Hiddink, who guided the Socceroos to the knockout stage of 2006 World Cup in Germany.
Funds raised by the event were to benefit the Johnny Warren Football Foundation.
Greatest ever Australian team (4-3-3): Mark Schwarzer (gk), Lucas Neill, Joe Marston, Craig Moore, Alan Davidson, Johnny Warren, Ned Zelic, Tim Cahill, Ray Baartz, Harry Kewell, Mark Viduka.

There'll be arguments all over the place but not a bad side. I would have had Peter Wilson and Milan Ivanovich as the central defenders though.

Definitely not Harry.
This article from Goal sums it up I reckon.

hehe yeh he had heaps to do with that champions league win. but your right he has the most trophies which is one thing to go on but i think the players contribution to things has to be considered.
viduka was scoring goals and doing damage year after year. schwarzer is an interesting one too
once again with these things tho it is more of a debate as too what we think constitutes 'the greatest'
Re: Harry the greatest? What do you think
he has always showed up in the big games, did a lot more in an australia shirt than dukesmike17 wrote:DOC wrote:look at what kewell achieved during his career:

kewell was always on hand to promote the game, never shirked a photo or autograph, some people say hes money hungry etc but look at neill...
based on all this i think kewell is the only choice, with about 5-8 players just off, if okon and zelic had had the same club careers are their performances in a national team shirt they would have clearly won it

Re: Harry the greatest? What do you think
No one! Harry IMO is undoubtably the best we've ever seen. Sure Liverpool fans whinge and say he was injuried all the time for them. He did still manage 319 apps for them.DOC wrote:look at what kewell achieved during his career:

I'd say your out by about 200 appearances.
He only featured 18 times in his last 2 seasons at Liverpool.....

But Liverpool fans do whinge a lot

Re: Harry the greatest? What do you think
Just beingthere doesn't count - apart froma goal against Croatia none of the above criteria cut the mustard.DOC wrote:look at what kewell achieved during his career:
CL winner - so was Djimi Traore
FA cup winner - lots of terrible players have won a medal
10 seasons plus EPL - so did Francis Benali
semi final CL - see Djimi Traore
2 world cup appearances - Howard Webb?
who comes close?
Selfish, over rated, self absorbed player who had a good season (with Leeds years ago) and has single handedly got a flock of sheep eating out of his hand.

Re: Harry the greatest? What do you think
You could say that geezer!
Don't get me wrong I recognise his talent but just don't think he is worthy of the admiration he is afforded because he hasn't achieved what his talent merits. If I was a fan of any of his clubs (and I would be filthy on him if I was a Leeds fan taking Galatasary money) I would have felt cheated and Australia got short changed too. Cahill is the better player and shows more committment and endeavour.
