League provided linesmen
Just a query, has any other clubs, specifically lower down the divisions, have the league appoint them official linesmen for the game? A few weeks ago we were advised we would have two and that we'd have to pay for both (on top of the referees fees), however only one rocked up, we still had to pay him AND we had to supply the other linesman... Then yesterday it was advised the same thing, the referee told us we would be having two official linesman, and that we'd have to pay them both. We flat out refused, and they didn't arrive (wether they were told by the referee that they wouldn't be getting paid, or didn't arrive for other reasons).
Does anyone know the official ruling on this? I have no qualms with splitting the cost with the other team for one linesman, and then supplying the other linesman, however if we continually have to pay two linesman AND a referee, a small club like ours will actually lose money after we take into account the beers and BBQ.

Splitting costs between clubs is usually done in cup games.

Who was the referee?
The reason I ask is against Gleeson, we had an official and two official linesmen attend and of course paid for them.
However last week the offical ref went up to our club offcial and goes I need $170 becuase youve got two linesmen attending. Our official responded no probelms when they arrive ill give them the match fee. No linesmen attended.

As for paying the officials, I've got no issue paying the ref, but how many times a season are other clubs having to fork out for 1 or 2 linesmen? If two home games in a row we've had them (or supposed to have had them) and none of our away games have had them this year, will it be evened out?
We don't get much money from our bar and takings, I can assure you our club won't be forking out for three officials every home game. Why Woukd we want to lose money on a match day just so we can pay two 14 year old kids?

Re: League provided linesmen
It's pretty simple, you pay for officials at home games in the league.
If one linesman turns up then it's the home teams responsibility to provide the other official.
If you don't pay them then the league will fine you. SIMPLE!!
Are you sure your username shouldn't be scottish?

Unless we played you in the first few rounds, we then got a BBQ early ish in the year. We've ALWAYS had beer, don't you worry about that!
God is an Englishman - can I ask who you are affiliated with? My argument isn't that we should have to pay them, I just wanted to know if they had a fair system as to how many times they were appointed, say we got a linesman five times a season at around $60, spending a total of $300 on extra officials, and Port Pirie get none, is it fair that our league cost is $300 more than Pirie?

I don't actually see how my club is of relevance but it's no secret that I play for Modbury Jets.English wrote:Was that a piss take?Porky wrote:Have things changed? The argument in return could be that Pt Pirie haven't had the opportunity to have an official linesman at their games and you have. I would imagine that over a season it will even out but no guarantees on this one obviously.

Why does the home team provide a linesman?God is an Englishman wrote:If one linesman turns up then it's the home teams responsibility to provide the other official.
If NO official linesmen turned up, then the Away team would have to provide one anyway.
Why is it the Home team that has to use the non-official linesman?

Re: League provided linesmen
Nothing meant by the club question mate, I'm not sure how good your takings are, for example I'm sure clubs like downs and Parafield would have no trouble making the money for officials over the bar if they were in div three, however we barely clear $100 profit a weekend from BBQ and beers some weeks, so to put all that back into the officials is a bit frustrating.
Just to clarify no issues with the officials (as long as we are told in advance) but I believe it's got to be evenly distributed. Ie we had official linesman v Pirie, which we paid for, so they should have one up there.
I don't know many 16 year old officials who would travel to Pirie for $40, hell we have trouble getting two teams up there!

If one turns up then home team should get the choice; pay him and away team supply a lineman or give away team opportunity to pay for linesman and home supply one. If away team decline, then home team should pay for him and away team supply one.Bacon888 wrote:Why does the home team provide a linesman?God is an Englishman wrote:If one linesman turns up then it's the home teams responsibility to provide the other official.

Re: League provided linesmen
My understanding - admittedly from a million-years-ago, when we were in the SAASL - is that the "League" can appoint refs and assistant refs as and when they see fit.
But, I thought that the cost of assistants was to be met - in such circumstances - by both clubs 50:50 (unless one of the two clubs has requested the assistants, without agreement of the other club, in which case the requesting club pays)?
(Maybe things have changed ... and my memory is rubbish, so I may be typing rubbish in any case)
But I agree with a post above - and would include the topic on here about Club Refs as well - if and when the ref bodies (FFSA/SAASL) have sufficient numbers it does seem likely that in order to keep them sweet, they will use anyone not reffing that weekend as an assistant. This would potentially all-but treble the cost of officials for clubs during a season ... And that's going to put a strain on the finances of some clubs.
Ref-fees are already a pretty big part of club-expenses ... two or three times the amount is going to see subs/fees at many clubs increase, leading to a lot of unhappy players (and Club Treasurers).
In the highest Divisions I can see the sense ... but I'm not at all sure many of the lower division clubs are kitted out - or want - such a thing to happen.
Be nice to Club Refs & Linos ... Yours or Theirs ... Or you might end up paying through the nose because of it ;)

Re: League provided linesmen
The League's competition rulings place a lot of responsibilities and obligations on the home club.... as it should be.
Any clash of uniforms - home team changes.
Only one common changing area - visiting team has first priority.
Pay officials - home team.
Provide linesman if needed - home team.
Clubs having home ground advantage have all the resources readily available.
It's been many years since there have been enough officials to put some on lines but it was the norm for Div 1 and most Div 2 games to have 3 officials a long time ago. It is an unexpected turn around to all of a sudden see more officials but I would think most clubs would be happy with that even if it is an unexpected costing for their budget projections!

Re: League provided linesmen
Clubs got used to the lower cost of no linesmen & reserve refs because there wasnt enough.
Obviously the Ref numbers are increasing but theres still not enough to go around to cover everyone.
Surely the increasing Ref numbers is a good thing!

No issues with more ref and linesman mate, I was just querying if anyone knew it it was even distributed, or wether it was a case of 'well I live around the corner from Lions, I'll do them' which for a lesser clubs if we have to incur another $80 a home weekend in fees, isn't really something we can do

Only SAASRA can answer that but I would imagine that they look at the fixtures and make a decision as to which game best fits the extra officials.

Seems to me that we have clubs whingeing about club linesman cheating, then we have clubs whingeing that they have to pay for official linesman.
The only common denominator is clubs whingeing.
