I wouldn't call losing on penalties in 90 to the winners in the semi final TOTAL failure, neither would I say the same about the same events in 96. Include knocked out by a contoversial goal in 86 by the winners either. What about penalties in 98 and 06 after contoversial sending offs. Eliminated in 82 without losing a game, a freal goal by the winners in 02 and a goal not given in 10.
Get the point?
How many trophies did you win in those unlucky years?
You said yourself it's all about trophies didn't you? It's a complete failure if you don't get one then isn't it ?
we won "Le Tournoi" in 98.

It's this arrogance by the English( case in point God is an Englishman) as to why England have struggled for decades.

Arrogance is a self deluded sense of one's own importance. Therefore we can't be arrogant because we are as important as we think we are.
You just can't argue with facts.

But the table at the draw was posted, the most important thing to do in the 1st round of a major tournament is get out of the group stages. You can lose in the groups and it doesn't matter as long as you go through.

Given the choice at the group stage, is your preferance to get into the 2nd round or to go home?

no, but u can win the whole tournament by progressing!
if England is such a powerhouse, they should be aimimg for semi's at least every major tournament!
I bet Brazil, are not just content in progressing...

THERE YOU HAVE IT!!
In the group stap stages the only thing that matters is progressing. If you scrape through in 2nd place on GD or win every game 10 NIL, you get to the same place THE 2ND ROUND!
So when you put a group table up from the 2010 world cup, surely the only important thing to look at it the teams that progressed. England did, that part of the job was DONE!
The 2nd round result is irrelevant to that group table.

So if we'd played ghana then we would have beaten spain and won it. I disagree!

Australia lost their 2006 World Cup to the eventual winners.
Does that mean their campaign was more successful than England's, since they were knocked out by the 4th placed team?

06 you lost in regulation time to the winners. It took a penalty shoot out after progressing further to knock us out. NEXT!!!

Because you weren't knocked out by a goal that according to the laws of the game shouldn't have been allowed, we were!

Fenwick's fault for putting one in his own net.
