Greatest finishes to matches..

Post by Facts and Stats »

Sunday night for drama tops it for me.

Arsenal in '89 was immnese but they only need one goal whereas City needed 2.
79 FA Cup Final was huge too. Arsenal coasting 2-0 (5 mins to go), UTD get to 2-2 and then Aland Sunderland wins it.
Glass to keep a team up

Solely on end of seasons to win championships then mickey thomas wins hands down. The fact it was rearranged after the season was supposed to have ended, 1st v 2nd and at the home of the team that finished 2nd.

Good on liverpool as they apparently took their champagne into the away dressing room for arsenal to enjoy.

To stay up though. Jimmy glass an on loan goalkeeper with no contract for next season scoring the goal that keeps them in the football league.

From Millwall - 2010 last game of the season. At one point the team gewtting promoted switched between 3 teams in 2 minutes. Then you have the play off final where a wembley bobble in the last minute ensured Millwall went up.

Came in to mention Jimmy Glass :)
You have to put the Champions League final in, "And Solskjaer has won it"

From personal memory I have a few.
West Ham vs Liverpool FA Cup Final. Ok, so it wasn't the finish to the match, but I have never felt as deflated as I had when Steven Gerrard decided to pull one out of nowhere.

West Ham vs Tottenham, 2006/07. One of the classic English Premier League games. Tevez (finally) scoring his first goal for West Ham, and we were 3-2 up going into the closing moments, only to snatch defeat from the claws of victory. It was at that point I was certain we were going to be relegated. Only for us to win 7 out of our last 9 games and stay up :D

Middlesbrough vs FC Basel and Middlesbrough vs Steaua Bucharest in the UEFA Cup. In the quarter and semi-finals, for a team to be 3-0 down on both occasions, and the same player, Massimo Maccarone, who did basically nothing else for the club, scored the 90th minute winner in both the games.

Italy vs Germany 2006 World Cup. Fabio Grosso.

Then of course there's a bunch of virtually meaningless by comparison league games, but those above are my favourites.

I think you also have to mention Manchester United vs Manchester City this year. It was simply extraordinary. When have Manchester United ever capitulated so hopelessly? I was astounded at how easily they were torn apart, and that David Silva pass to Edin Dzeko at the death was majestic. And come the end of the season, that extra 6 goal difference was crucial.

Was at the 89 final game, heartbreaking but also dramatic.
Liverpool fans stayed inside the ground on mass to congratulate the gunners and their players even came down and applauded the kop
for their sportsmanship.
Nicky would have left by then to get his coach back to London

Also......1982 milk cup final, Liverpool v Spurs, Spurs 1 nil up and Whelan spanked an equaliser in with 3 minutes remaining,
we went onto win it in extra time.

1985, Liverpool v Utd at Goodison park, FA Cup semi final, that man Whelan again curling a brilliant goal with 3 minutes left
to take it extra time, Utd won the replay.

Nicky won't remember them as he was still an Arsenal fan then

Oot'ers
gotta love em
The young boys said unto him....."go up baldhead, go up"......so he did, rose like a salmon and nodded the ball into the net......1 nil! :-)

Carra23. dont bother cominmg back to JetPark, return all your merchandise and pass.
I dont tolerate idiots like you

In 1983 Alan Kennedy scored the equaliser (15 to go?), and Whelan the winner as GIAE mentioned.
In 1982 Whelan scored 2 goals, one with 3 to go.
In 1981 v West Ham it was 0-0 with not much time left, then 2 very late ET goals....Sammy Lee was way offside when McDermott scored but it was given :-) I think Ray Stewart got the penalty for the Hammers.

I was at all LFC games at Wembley from 1979 to when it was bulldozed (you know that).

And I didn't do coaches, car and trains only!!!

urban myth the Denis Law one.

I looked it up, it wasnt teh last game of the aseon and they went down by quite a few points, so he didn't relegate them.

Maybe OLD Master can explain why the story was changed over time?

The great escape '93
Oldham v Liverpool 3-2
Villa v Oldham 0-1
Oldham v Southampton 4-3
Survived by GD, Palace down.

I can only imagine Wigan are trying to copy us again.

Add another one to this last season.

Wigan 3-2 West Ham. Wigan scoring 2 late goals courtesy of Charles N'Zogbia to ensure West Ham are relegated, and Wigan stay up.

1994 WC Quarter Final. Roberto Baggio goes bang in the 89th minute... goodbye Spain. First real memory of watching football, was only 10 years old.

Bulgaria were robbed of a penalty when they played Italy in that semi!

Anyway this goal which sent them into the World Cup in 94: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7dxno9_ixg

Emil Kostadinov's 90th minute winner in 1993 which was a World Cup qualifier between France and Bulgaria in Paris.

Cry in pain Platini.

Arsenal 89 at Anfield.

The fact that they had to win 2-0 and did it with the last kick of the game (Lukic welly > flick on and MT finish) is a lasting memory forever tattooed on my brain.

I know people will say last weekend's was more exciting (because Man City were behind), but for me the 89 one will ring in my ears for eternity cos Arsenal had to win 2-0 to win it on GD. You could not have written that script. Anfield was a fucking fortress in those days.

Grosso's in ET vs Germany in the 2006 WC was unreal for so many reasons, not least of all Pirlo's ridiculously cheeky look away pass to set him up.
