Olyroos bottom of the qualifying group
Woe is us! After the recent loss in Tashkent to Uzbekistan & the U.A.E.'s 1-0 win over Iraq we are bottom of the group and yet to score a goal.
We need to beat the U.A.E. away on 22/2/12 and hope that top team Uzbekistan beat Iraq away on 21/2/12. I fear it could all be over on 21/2.
I note very little interest in the media and by forumites here which is a pity because our game's profile would have been raised among mainstream Aussies who will follow all OZ sporting teams at the London Olympics. If we miss out it will be the first time since the 1988 games in South Korea. And who can forget the great 1992 team with Bozza, Zelic & others coming 4th in Barcelona?

True Ozzie. I know what FIFA think, hence they won't play Olympic qualifiers on designated dates when clubs have to release players. I know FIFA diminish the Olympics by only allowing THREE over-23-age players. What they don't understand is that in developing soccer-football countries like Australia & da U.S. of A. the Olympics ARE important. The general public's eyes ARE on the Olympics and casual mainstream neutral fans DO follow all their sporting teams in the Olympics.ozzie owl wrote:

I haven't seen too much sorrow by our soccer-football commentariat on this dire Olyroos position. There's nothing more I can say when a respected articulate person like Simon Hill doesn't show much lament this evening on the FiveAAFL show on the fact we are going to miss out.

Re: Olyroos bottom of the qualifying group
Whilst the mainstream sporting media will see non-qualification as doom and gloom, in footballing terms, the Olympics are mediocre in the scheme of things. Its easy to name World Cup winners without much thought, but I doubt many football pundits could roll off the last 3, let alone last 10 gold medal winners without googling.
I guess the mere fact the Olympics are in London, it would have been nice to be there to show the locals up again, but we still have an outside chance of getting there still, so.........

who cares the olympics are like a bad family member that wont leave for a month.
Re: Olyroos bottom of the qualifying group
Exactly, Polska. There'll be no AFL or NRL at the World party in London, but mainstream Aussies might have seen THEIR Olyroos on the World stage, maybe even crossing paths with Great Britain's David Beckham (as one of G.B.'s 3 celebrity overage players with one of the others probably Wales' Ryan Giggs).Bomber wrote:

Other forumites don't care about the Olympic tournament Bomber, as you can see by the lack of postings, but it was important enough for the likes of Messi & other emerging World stars to have participated in the past. Their apathy is disappointing and they miss the fact that our game's profile gets raised in our country where it is a minority sport.

sounds like it is you who is the chump

Re: Olyroos bottom of the qualifying group
good point about the games profile here but mainstream aussie fans wouldn't appreciate us just scraping out of a group and then getting knocked out..even if it was by Brazil or Spain ....We would have to do as well as we did in 1992 (4th)Con wrote:Woe is us! Re: Olyroos bottom of the qualifying group
Not "self" proclaimed, proclaimed by most of the football world. Yes, football & cricket are our national sports, and like the generous nation we are, we have shared them, along with rugby, rugby league, tennis, badminton, darts etc, etc, with the rest of the world who where incapable of inventing them. Not won anything....I think we have won a W.C. As for excuces, every country that fails to win, trots them out, even the Aussies( Grasso dived...we would have won the W.C. if hadn't) Give us a break!! Now, let see what Ireland has won. Back after 2 hours of research, well, it looks like a big fat zero. No wait, they did do well a few years back when they had an English manager. They thought a lot of big Jacky, enough to give him the key to Ireland. He sold it a couple of hours later in a Dublin pub for ten pounds.

Dear Mr. Tumour, I think it's time to re-emigrate, you obviously don't want to be here in this colony associating with convicts who apparently are no match for the great sporting prowess of England.
Go home, your country needs you.

You poor deluded man, most Irish don't care for football, the Gaelic games are bigger in Ireland, and here well aus rules a d cricket are bigger, both nations aren't expected to do much unlike perennial failures England

exactly when you have one of the worst coaches in australia involved the results will look like they are everytime, the golden boy is getting his arse handed to him everytime. Viddy still hasnt learnt from AUFC days keeps playing the defensive mindset.
Re: Olyroos bottom of the qualifying group
So we're out. I'm absolutely devo as I was so keen to see the lads over here. So what does this say for our football revolution? U17 WC = shithouse, U20 WC = shithouse and now U23 didn't even qualify.

Re: Olyroos bottom of the qualifying group
Gone and without a goal scored. Wonder if the "3 per club maximum" rule will apply in future? Ridiculous, but then again, its only the Olympics.

lol didnt score a goal all tornament, Vidmar was coach right........surprise surprise.
Re: Olyroos bottom of the qualifying group
Yeah, three 0-0 draws don't sit well with the general OZ public psyche. And this 0-1 really hurt.Bomber wrote:Gone and without a goal scored. Wonder if the "3 per club maximum" rule will apply in future? Ridiculous, but then again, its only the Olympics.
The 3-players-per-Club limit was FFA self-harm. Can't remember earlier rounds, especially at home - why didn't we do open selection of best team, even if the A-League clubs whinged? I'm pretty sure some were midweek, so these young guys could have played for the club on the weekend and then easily backed up for the Olyroos midweek. Even with limited preparation it would have been much better to have the absolute best selection on the park, no matter if FIVE or SIX came from one club.
Also, can't agree Polska that ''it's only the Olympics". The general non-football public sat up and took notice when Bozza, Zelic & co. knocked off Holland in qualifying and then marched right up to 4th @ Barcelona'92. London 2012 will have it's over-age stars & celebrities like Beckham & Messi. (I liked how Messi defied his club in 2008 & said he was playing for his country).
Now the Olyroos & Matildas won't be at the party.

Re: Olyroos bottom of the qualifying group
Surely the reason Viddie is coaching is down to cash? The FFA couldn't offload Adelaide United with him in charge, but couldn't afford to pay him out, so moved him into this post - why else would they do it?
Hope he doesn't have too much longer to go on his contract
