Apac were SAASL League 1 Champions for 4 seasons in a row....1968,1969, 1970 and 1971 (as well as 1966) before they ventured into The 3rd Division of the Federation and were made up from many new British migrants with Bobby Anderson running the show (mainly financed through his well run and attended Bingo evenings).sparts wrote:never knew MP Apac were so dominant in those days. where did the players come from/go to from apac? also the austria playing in div 1 was that the side that played feds around the same era?
I still remember when he brought Bobby Henderson, Allan Strain and Lawrie ??? over from Scotland to play for them.
I signed up for them in 1976 (to play for their Under 18's) and did their pre-season. My two older brothers Dave and Chris Swann were already goalkeepers for Apac at the time, so I re-signed back to the Downs when Jimmy Hughes asked me.
Many old Apacians congregate at the Downs these days.

Re: The Years were 1970, 1971, 1972...
Austria were in the federation first division in 1968.... after an amalgamation with Azzurri, the bulk of their players continued as Austria in the SAASL second division in 1969. They won that division easily, and were promoted to first division in 1970. They finished fifth that year, but had declined to seventh by 1972. Not sure when they folded up, but they gradually faded away in the seventies as their stars from the sixties aged......sparts wrote:never knew MP Apac were so dominant in those days. where did the players come from/go to from apac? also the austria playing in div 1 was that the side that played feds around the same era?

I remember Rab Jones... I saw him play when I was a kid; I think he had red hair! He played for the state team against Manchester United in 1967. His brother Harry was a top goalscorer for Birkalla in the early sixties.sparts wrote:yeah my dad had a season at aurtrai in the mid 60's i think it was. he said only he and rab jones spoke english. dad moved onto eliz city and rab jones onto birkalla i believe. think he now has a fed award named after him???

I remember when my dad took me to see the Cup Final in 1971 ( i think ) and Apac had a former Scottish professional named Dave Hartley who scored 5 goals,at least two of them were directly from corners.I think it was played at Ramsay Park ????swannsong wrote:Apac were SAASL League 1 Champions for 4 seasons in a row....1968,1969, 1970 and 1971 (as well as 1966) before they ventured into The 3rd Division of the Federation and were made up from many new British migrants with Bobby Anderson running the show (mainly financed through his well run and attended Bingo evenings).sparts wrote:never knew MP Apac were so dominant in those days. where did the players come from/go to from apac? also the austria playing in div 1 was that the side that played feds around the same era?

Some old action photos from 1971, the Downs first year with Seniors in the SAASL.
The game is being played down at West Beach (behind the airport).
I thought at first they might be playing Western United (who became Fulham United) but they weren't in the same Division that year.
My older brother Dave Swann (in goal) prepares to deal with an attack.
John Stanfield (the bearded player I think) launches a shot on goal with Tony Partridge (no.9) looking on.
Alan Edwards heads the ball across the face of goal.
Howard Bell watches a Downs shot test out the keeper.
Howard Bell tries an attempt on goal himself.

Think it is still standing, when I was refereeing for SAASL (circa 1995-1998) the Referees would hold their meetings there !seanason wrote:What happened to the Black Lion?

Good work Swannsong.
I remember my Dad taking me to some games at ground where West Beach use to play, was quite a few pitches there. One thing that really sticks in my mind, use to be a guy pushed this wooden cart around, about the size of a small trailer, was loaded, with Potato Chips,Soft Drinks, Chocolate Bars - probably the original mobile "snack wagon". He would wheel it all by himself, around the entire complex, always did a roaring trade.
I wish i had taken some photos of it,it would be priceless.

My Grandad (Joe Turner) was the Bingo caller and a very good friend of Bobby Anderson, every Tue, Thu and Sunday nights at the Karriwarra Hotel then at Apac Clubrooms when they were built. It was a great way for income for APAC. I played there under Bobby Hogg it was a real eye opener being there as a 16 year old coming straight out of juniors. Its a pity APAC no longer exists.

That West Beach ground had at least four pitches on it... many Metro and Collegiate league games were played there in the late seventies and early eighties...you could blast a shot wide and hit someone playing in another game on the next pitch!

Hey Swanny, any chance you had the fixtures for 1972? This was Brahma's first year and I was just wondering who our very first game was against.

I can remember watching APAC down at the Peachey Road ground and always pulled a big crowd with some great goals scored. I think my dad told me that H Stokes who was top scorer for APAC in 1970 was also a decent boxer and held South Australia titles and may have represented Australia at one time??

In his hey-day, Tony Partridge was one of the fastest local sprinters I have seen on a football field !The Wise Monkey wrote:Have known old man Partridge for years, can't remember him with dark hair.
I think he played for Elizabeth City (Playford) at one stage.
On the APAC topic, I made my APAC debut (and final) A Team appearance in 1976....I signed on for their U/18s (with Bobby Clarke as coach).
APAC played a game against WRE away and they put me on the A-Team bench.....my older Brother Dave was in goal (my other older brother Chris was in goal for APAC's Reserves at that time but had to leave after his game) and Dave was sent off after WRE were awarded a penalty....I went on to face up against the then WRE Paul McKenna's successful spot kick.
Jimmy Hughes (Snr.) then asked me back to the Downs for the A's but demoted me after only 3 games
