What would you call the Netherlands game in the WC if not matching it with them? We were leading at one point.

& then they turned it on and blew us away.

Besides a 2-1 win v Germany, the other results in 99 were;
1-2 loss to Brazil (with a late consultation goal)
1-0 win over Mali
1-0 win over Qatar
penalty win over USA

I think the stars definitely aligned that year

A lot of other countries have been spending and investing more in football and development then Australia in the last 10-20 years. They have either caught up or past us, simple really

And a handful of full time coaches scattered around Australia can not perform miracles and produce world class players in this current environment

More full time coaches are certainly required. But besides sticking our hands out and asking for more money what else should be done?

Won their first game 4-0 and second 8-2.

Their first game against the hosts Cambodia had 25k people show up!

Nice to see SA lad Lachlan Brook on the scoresheet.
Looks like Tony Vidmar is keen to give the entire a squad a go.

The Joeys have continued their free-scoring run at the Under-16 AFF Youth Championships with a big win over Myanmar on Monday night.
The young Aussies burst out of the blocks, scoring three times inside the first 20 minutes on the way to a 4-0 win in Myanmar.

That win means they've qualified for the semi finals.

The Joeys head into Friday’s semi-final at the AFF Youth Championships in blistering form after another huge win over the Philippines on Wednesday night.
After scores were locked at 2-2 midway through the first half, Ufuk Talay’s side blew their opponents away to run out 8-2 winners in Cambodia.

The Joeys will now take on Thailand in the last four on Friday night, with the winner to meet the victor in the other semi between Laos and Myanmar.
Its all sounding very positive.

We've drawn Germany, Argentina and Mexico.
I'm gonna go with group of death.

Still should be a fantastic experience for the lads!

The Joeys have been bundled out of the Under-16 AFF Tournament in Cambodia after suffering a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to Thailand overnight.
The young Aussies found themselves 3-0 down with 20 minutes remaining before pulling two goals back to set up a thrilling finish.
But despite a host of chances in the dying stages the Joeys were unable to fashion an equaliser and will now face Laos in the 3rd/4th placed playoff.

Disappointing obviously they missed Tony Vidmar who was in Chile for the U17 WC draw.

Interesting its a very different squad to the one that played in the ASEAN Cup not long ago.

I wonder why Brimmer, Zaineddine and Piscopo haven't got a run?

The ASEAN cup was filled with 2000/2001 borns. These are the 1998/1999 born as they have the u17 World Cup in the next few months. Brimmer was carrying an injury so they decided to not pick him, Zaineddine was just not picked im guessing and Piscopo plays for the Italian underage teams unfortuantely.

Ok thanks for that. Yeah considering Piscopo's record at Inter it would be great to see him in the Green and Gold.

Limoges 0–8 Australia
United States 1–1 Australia
Stade Rennais U19 1–2 Australia
France 6–0 Australia
Some decent results for their European tour.
Although I think the last game can be excused considering it was their 4th game in 8 days.

Now the lads are off to Vietnam for the qualification of the U17 Asian Cup.
16 September 2015
Australia v Guam

18 September 2015
Myanmar v Australia

20 September 2015
Australia v Vietnam

First game of the U17 WC and the Joeys lost 4-1 to Germany. This was always going to be a tough group.

Apparently they played well I have had a chance to see any of it.

they were destroyed
it was 3-0 at half time and game over, the defending was pathetic and this so called golden generation of new dawn joeys looked completely out of their depth

Germany played 4-2-3-1 and we were trying to hold them with a 4-3-3. Every time we had possession Germany was on to us like hounds. Poor kids they are told to do something by the coaching staff that is completely inappropriate to the way the opposition is playing, hence a defeat is inevitable.
I think technically the joeys are ok, but FFA is so fixed in making all teams to play 4-3-3 that they completely forget that teams play on their strengths and the on the opposition flaws. not that Germany has many but they are not perfect.

When has anyone ever called these 15 and 16 year old kids the golden generation?

What you should also take into consideration is that Germany is the powerhouse of Football in Europe and often gets similar results against other European teams.

We have the added problems of a vast continent, small population, are nowhere near the No1 sport in the country and we have to travel vast distances to get our teams together regularly.

The Germans can get their players together at will and are the major sport in their nation - which is also a super patriotic nation unlike Australia.
The older I get the better I was.

0-0 with Mexico.

Much improved. We probably looked the better side in the second half.
Couple of good chances not to win it. Armenakas denied on a free kick by an awesome save.

Now we need Germany to win their games and hopefully we can get the result v Argentina. Considering Mexico beat Argentina 2-0 there is hope.
If we come third there is a decent chance we'll still progress the top 4 of the 6 third place sides will also progress.

I thought he was a more attacking player. I didn't realise he played as an 8 or a 6.
He looked good.

The pace in the first 15 minutes was incredible, 1st half mecico looked 3 classes above. 2 nd half though Joeys looked the better and will take confidence into the game against the Argys.

Argentina got pumped 4-0. I think as long as we can get a draw v them we'll make the next round as one of the best 3rd place sides.
To come second we'd really need Germany to put a few away against Mexico and beat Argentina.

If the lads get third it looks like they'll face either South Korea or Nigeria.
