United Women aiming to turn season around against Glory

Post by admin »

Adelaide United FC’s Women’s Team may be without a victory so far this season, but the Lady Reds are confident of securing their maiden win when they take on Perth Glory Women, on Saturday 24 October 2009 at Hindmarsh Stadium in Round 4 of the Westfield W-League 2009 Season.

Despite holding up the foot of the table and failing to find the back of the net in their first three games, United’s Women have by no means been disgraced in their performances so far.

As United’s relatively young inexperienced squad continues to gel together, Coach Mike Barnett believes his team is getting closer to breaking through for its first points of the season.

Barnett will welcome the return of Captain Christina Papageorgiou and Karina Roweth for the match with the Glory, while he also has the option of bringing in talented young duo Ashlee Faul and Ruth Wallace, who both recently returned from Myanmar, as part of the Westfield (Australian) Women’s under 16 squad.

“We’re looking forward to Christina (Papageorgiou) and Karina (Roweth) both returning from injury to help bolster the squad and register our first win,” Barnett said.

“Perth are just three points ahead of us on the table, so it’s a must win game to get us off the foot of the table.”

But the challenge of getting past Perth will be a difficult one. The Glory have Westfield Matildas and former Lady Reds goalkeeper Emma Wirkus in between the posts, as well as a number of highly capped Matildas, led by Collette McCallum, signalling the girls from the west will be out to prove they are a top four team.

Kick-Off on Saturday is at 2.30pm (ACDT) and tickets will be available at the Holden Street Ticket Gate from 2.00pm (ticket prices are adults $10, concession $5, kids under 15 FREE).
