Link to all Ingle Farm v Southern Knights photos
There’s already been a bit of discussion about this game so far but here goes.
Southern Knights piled onto their mini bus and travelled 50 kilometres North to meet Ingle Farm in the Quarter Finals of the SAASL Challenge Cup.
Farm were still hurting from the previous weeks loss to USC Lion and Knights were likewise hurting from their loss to ISC Raptors.
Watching the Reserve game before hand it seemed that both sides would need to be wary of the high but uneven bounce.
Knights as they often do, started out at a rapid pace and found themselves leading 0-1 after ~5 minutes when Steven Hawkins latched on to the
ball from 25 metres out and the ball evaded the outstretched Robbie Greenwood.
Sandy Neary made his presence known early back at his old stomping ground closely watched by Dave Eggars.
Ingle Farm managed to slot the ball into Knights net despite the linesman’s flag being raised instantly,
eventually the linesman was spotted by referee John McDermott and the goal disallowed.
Knights could have stretched their lead but Farm managed to draw level from a well taken goal courtesy of Paul Jones.
A lapse in concentration and understanding in Farms defence was capitalized on by Knights and they regained the lead 1-2.
The game ebbed from end to end and eventually Scott Bradley headed Knights to a 1-3 lead which they maintained until the break.
After the break Ingle Farm began to assert themselves on the game and were able to pull back the scoreline to 2-3.
Knights unfortunately lost key defender Steve MacGuire to a straight red card following a minor tussle over the ball after it had gone out of play.
Knights also lost tenacious forwards Tony Micallef to a reoccurring, niggling injury and Matt Daughtry to illness.
Farm took full advantage of the changing circumstances enabling Chris Ennis more freedom and enabling them to control much of the game.
Sandy Neary continued to cause Farm some headaches but they were able to close down Knights with numbers.
Knights held on to their slim lead until the 85th. minute through some excellent work from keeper Mark Kay and defenders Matt Harrison,
Lee White, Steve Hawkins and Lyndon Parry. Eventually Farm levelled the game at 3-3 to take the game into extra time.
Knights struggled on and lost in form defender Lee White to injury.
As would be expected Farm struck through a strong, forceful header from mainstay Chris Ennis.
Farm had several opportunities to further their lead but either squandered their opportunities or brought the best out of Mark Kay.
Despite their situation Knights had a few chances to level the ledger but lacked numbers to finish off their attacking forays.
Well done to Ingle Farm for their win but equally well done to the Southern Knights boys who fought all day.

Southern Knights went into their first ever Quarter Finals Cup tie with Ingle Farm wearing their new strips sponsored by Wayne Phillis Ford.

A gutsy effort from Robbie Greenwood denies Matt Daughtry the chance to put Knights further ahead.

Dave Eggars had some good touches and worked hard for Farm throughout the first half.

Both sets of supporters gave as good as they got....but gee, that green is a dour colour !

Despite Farms improved work rate and numerical advantage, Tony Micallef was still causing their defenders some concerns.

A deceptively close chance for Knights.

Despite some observers suggestions the traffic was not all one way as both goals came under threat.

Re-grouping for extra time.

A steady stream of pressure was applied to Knights in the first part of extra time.

Once again I apologise for the blurred image....Chris Ennis powers his way past 4 Knights defenders to head Farm into the lead for the first time in the game....4-3.

Chances go begging for Farm combined with some excellent keeping from Mark Kay.
