Vodafone Cup braces for Super Sunday

Post by admin »

Essendon’s Monday night win has blown open both ends of the Vodafone Cup. Here are the scenarios for this week – sit tight!

If Essendon win or draw away to Preston on Sunday AND the Blues lose at home to Sunshine then the Royals will remain in the Vodafone Cup at the expense of the boys from Epping. However a solitary point for Fawkner Whittlesea will keep them safe, but only if Essendon lose or draw.

More simply – if the Blues win against the Georgies they are safe – but that then opens the door for teams sitting just above them – the Georgies and Melbourne Knights - to slide into second last.

A Royals win lifts them to 30 points with Sunshine and the Knights. If either Sunshine or the Knights win or draw then they are home and hosed. A loss for either complicates things. It leaves them equal with Essendon (assuming they win) and all three have comparable goal differences. That’s why goals conceded this week are more important than ever.

Looking at the six, the top four are guaranteed finals, although the order can change. South can fall only as low as third but the 'Blue and Whites' can clinch second place with a win regardless of other results. Heidelberg and Altona meet this week - either could snare second place and a double chance from South (assuming they lose) with a win but a draw won't do for either side.

Ninth placed Richmond can still make the six but they must win against Bulleen and hope for a Steven Bradbury like collapse from the teams in front of them. The Zebras also need three points to capture sixth place and then must count on Green Gully claiming a draw or a loss as well. A Zebras win and a Kingston loss will work for the Veneto Club boys, though a Kingston draw will leave them equal on 36 points with the Reds ahead on superior goal difference – one point won’t do for Bulleen.

The reigning champion Cavaliers can climb as high as fifth with a win if Preston and Kingston lose. A draw at home to South could still see them into the finals but only if the Reds lose at home to the Knights.
