Aaron ready for action

Pre-season training is already well under way at Spurs Lodge, and Aaron Lennon is delighted with the mood in the camp as the lads look ahead to the 2008-09 campaign.

He said: "It's been good to have a break but now I'm back and feeling fresh and it's great to see the lads again in training after a long time off.

"It seems as though everyone has looked after themselves over the summer. We all knew that we'd be in for a hard pre-season, but everyone's up for it and looking forward to the coming campaign.

"We're all excited about the new season and it's also good to see new faces joining the Club as well. It's a really strong squad and everyone's buzzing."

The squad travels out to Spain later this week for what should be a testing training camp in the Mediterranean heat.

But once again, Aaron is looking forward to his and the team's fitness levels being pushed to the maximum as preparations continue.

He added: "Now we go to Spain and that will be a real test of our endurance because the climate will be hotter. It won't be easy but we're all up for the challenge."

So far, so good

Gareth Bale is relishing the hard graft of pre-season after his long spell on the sidelines.

The Welsh international was a star of the early part of last season but damaged his foot against Birmingham City on December 2 - an injury that ruled him out for the rest of the campaign.

Still just 18, Gareth has been a regular visitor to Spurs Lodge during the players' summer break and appears to be reaping the benefits - the management team are delighted with his fitness levels at this point of pre-season training.

"I feel great and I feel confident," said Gareth. "Pre-season is always about running at this stage and I feel strong.

"It won't be easy - pre-season never is - you have to graft through it and you will reap the rewards.

"Even though it's hard work I'm just happy to be back out there after being injured for such a long time, happy to be running and happy to be back to normal."

Gareth particularly impressed in fitness tests on Friday and Saturday.

"I wasn't too sure where my fitness levels were at," he added. "I've worked hard throughout the off-season to get my fitness up and I was pleased with the tests, I wasn't expecting them to go so well."

First team coach Marcos Alvarez said: "Gareth is working really well. His fitness is unbelievable. He's happy with his work and we feel he will be a very important player for us next season. His fitness levels are excellent and he has that fitness naturally."

Ruthless Juande Ramos is getting ready to launch a mass cull at Spurs.

The Tottenham boss will slash his squad by selling a whole team of players — plus five substitutes.

Ramos is unhappy with some of the stars he inherited from his White Hart Lane predecessor Martin Jol.

The Spaniard must also balance the books after bringing in more than £40million of talent in the January and current transfer windows.

And he needs to raise cash to finance a £15m swoop for Blackburn’s England winger David Bentley.

The team of Spurs stars set for the exit — dubbed Tottenham Hotspurned — look as though they would hold their own in the Premier League.

But Ramos is not interested in a mid-table finish and has set his sights on closing the gap on the top four.

Ramos took over from Jol in October last year and lifted the Carling Cup in his first season.

But Spurs stuttered to finish 11th in the league and Ramos is desperate to improve his squad further.

He was quick off the mark in signing Luka Modric from Dinamo Zagreb for £16.5m this summer. The midfielder, 22, went on to star for Croatia at Euro 2008 last month.

Ramos also snapped-up highly-rated Mexican winger Giovanni Dos Santos, 19, in a £4.7m deal from Barcelona.

The Spurs boss began the expected Lane Drain by selling promising keeper Tommy Forecast to Southampton for £200,000 on Monday.

The rookie, 21, is set to be followed out of White Hart Lane by former No 1 Paul Robinson.

England flop Robbo, 28, hopes to resurrect his career by sealing a £4m switch to Aston Villa.

Middlesbrough are also interested in Robinson, whose days at Tottenham look numbered with the imminent £7.8m arrival of PSV Eindhoven’s Brazilian keeper Heurelho Gomes, 27, who is awaiting a work permit.

In defence, Pascal Chimbonda, Michael Dawson, Anthony Gardner and Young Pyo Lee are all likely to be shipped out.

Chimbonda’s agent Willie McKay said he expects the French full-back to leave before the start of the new season with Newcastle, Portsmouth and Jol’s new club Hamburg in the hunt for his signature.

Dawson is also a target for the Toon and Premier League rookies Hull, while fellow centre-back Gardner is close to completing a move to new-boys Stoke.

Younes Kaboul is another that faces the Ramos boot. The French defender, 21, was a £7m Jol signing but failed to impress.

Portsmouth are favourites to sign Kaboul and are set to make a £6m bid. Full-back Lee is lined-up for a return to his former club PSV — possibly as part of the Gomes deal.

Midfield quartet Steed Malbranque, Teemu Tainio, Kevin Boateng and Hossam Ghaly all look to be on their way out of N17.

Former Fulham ace Malbranque is a £4m target for Villa and Tainio is another linked with Jol’s Hamburg.

Real Betis are after Boateng and Ghaly is attracting interest from Blackburn and Derby, where he played on loan last season.

Spurs insist they do not want to sell Robbie Keane, but the club — and player — may find it hard to reject Liverpool’s advances.

And fellow frontman Darren Bent could be offloaded after a disappointing season following his £16.5m switch from Charlton 12 months ago.

Sunderland are leading the chase for the England man but are yet to meet Tottenham’s valuation.

Ramos also wants rid of fringe defenders Paul Stalteri and Ricardo Rocha. French winger Adel Taarabt is a loan target for West Brom.

While this is the Sun so probably bollocks, its about time someone cut the driftwood loose, however he would be silly to sell Dawson and Kabul until we have proper replacements for our injury prone superstars :)

Tottenham agree terms for Espanyol striker Luis Garcia

Tottenham have agreed terms for Espanyol striker Luis Garcia.

Reports in Spain suggest Spurs have beaten off interest from Benfica to sign the Spain international.

Negotiations took place on Wednesday night in the Ciutat Contal with the player's agent Juanma Lopez, together with Espanyol's lawyer Vicente Montes.

Following a successful meeting, the player is set to finalise personal terms with the London club before flying to England next week to undergo a medical.

Day 7/8, July 9/10

"WEDNESDAY was the longest session so far," reported Marcos.

"We started in the morning with a nine-kilometre run. This included a spell of running three kilometres at a four-minute pace, a very strong pace, but the lads coped well and that was very pleasing. In fact, most did it quicker than a four-minute pace.

"The full running sessions were three kilometres in 15 minutes, then three kilometres in 12 minutes and then back to three kilometres in 15 minutes. The weather was awful!

"We had lunch and then moved onto gym work, then a football session of one hour, 40 minutes.

"The players are getting stronger but it's hard work and they are suffering, they are feeling their muscles and are stiff and sore. It's tough but they all want to show us they can do it.

"Thursday will be a lighter session, a circuit that will be about endurance and agility and then we fly to Spain looking for the sun!

"Our training camp will be harder for the players because it is hot out there, we will see how they respond to the conditions."

Rafa rules out Villa but wants Keane
Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has revealed his interest in signing Tottenham's Robbie Keane but ruled out the possibility of signing David Villa.
Benitez has already admitted he wants another striker this summer as Peter Crouch prepares to join Portsmouth. Keane and Villa have both attracted the Spaniard's attention, but it appears unlikely that Villa will arrive at Anfield.

Keane's future at White Hart Lane has been the subject of speculation in recent weeks, though, with reports suggesting Spurs would listen to offers for the Republic of Ireland international.

"I said the other day that he (Villa) is one of the names we had on our list, but I can say at this moment that it is not an option for us," said Benitez.

"We know Villa is a very good player, we know the price and we know the players we have, so when you consider everything we decided he was one of the names, but at this moment, not our target.

"Keane is one of the other names and okay we are still working with other names. We were in contact and we will see now."

How much did this wanker complain when Chelsea confirmed thier interest in Gerrard last year and now hes saying he wants Keane, Cockhead.

As our young professionals return for pre-season training, development coach Clive Allen runs the rule over their performances for the reserves last term and gives us his hopes for them for the coming season.

The group ended their Barclays Reserve League South campaign with just one defeat in seven games, a run that included a win over eventual champions Aston Villa and draws against high-flying Arsenal and Reading.

"The average age of the side last season was young," reflected Clive. "It's a young group anyway that we're bringing through and they are developing.

"It will take time, there will be blips along the way but they are keen, enthusiastic and we're making progress. One thing is for sure, the experience they've all had last season will stand them in good stead next time around."

Here are Clive's thoughts on the squad...

Troy Archibald-Henville (14 starts, 1 sub, 2 goals) - Troy had a good season, pushed to get into the first team squad and matured over the season with playing games regularly, which was important for him. He's fitter and stronger and we'll be looking for further progress. He captained the side and took that challenge on well.

David Button (6 starts) - Went off to Grays on loan and played some competitive games, Justin Edinburgh is manager there and he was pleased with him. He acquitted himself well at the end of the season, talked well and that came from going out on loan. He's growing in stature, a great size, physically still developing and mentally very tough.

Simon Dawkins (13 starts, 1 sub, 2 goals) - He was frustrated by injury and that upset his rhythm. He had chances, didn't score the goals he wanted to and knows he needs to improve on his ratio of goals to chances. I'm sure he will.

Dorian Dervite (7 starts, 2 subs, pictured below) - We had to be careful in terms of bringing him back from a serious knee injury, he worked very hard, showed great character to get fit again and played nine games. His confidence is growing again and it's ideal he played those games before the end of the season.

Image

Tommy Forecast (7 starts) - Always consistent, had to be patient as is the case with the goalkeepers. Gained experience with the first team at the end of last season and that will stand him in good stead.

Kyle Fraser-Allen (5 starts, 2 subs) - Very enthusiastic, sharp, quick and progressed as much as anyone coming out of the Academy last season, will be looking to progress.

Cian Hughton (13 starts, 1 sub) - Still developing and working hard at all aspects of his game. His level of consistency was very good over the season and deserved his new contract.

Danny Hutchins (1 start, 6 subs) - Intelligent passer of the ball, reads the game well, a good footballer who works hard at his game. Moves up to the reserve team squad from the Academy and will be a valuable member.

David Hutton (6 starts, 4 subs, 1 goal, pictured below) - Had spells last season when he showed exactly what he's capable of. Finished the season strongly - a sharp, bright player.

Image

Jake Livermore (12 starts, 2 goals) - Showed he's physically strong and capable at reserve level, went on loan to MK Dons, a team on the up and thoroughly enjoyed that experience. I know they were pleased with him and he wasn't out of his depth at that level. Can now build on it.

Jacques Maghoma (9 starts, 1 goal) - Frustrating season broken up by injuries and therefore lacked consistency. He has developed physically and hopefully will come on for that next season.

Kieran McKenna (3 starts) - Kieran has been sadly missed because of his injuries and knowing him, he'll work hard to get back and I'm sure we'll see him back next season.

Leigh Mills (6 starts) - Struggled with an ankle injury and that resulted in surgery, he's now stronger and will go on loan to Brentford next season. I know he will be determined to do well.

Takura Mtandari (2 starts, 7 subs) - Did well when we played him in a different central midfield role, he's versatile and did well in games when we needed that solid base, showed good discipline.

Tomas Pekhart
(13 starts, 5 goals, pictured below) - A goalscorer and typically big, tall, centre-forward who has worked hard on his game and is looking to develop. Has done well internationally as well and you can't underestimate that.

Image

Danny Rose (9 starts, 1 sub, 1 goal) - Found it tough initially because of injury but overcame that and we saw impressive displays at the end of the season. An aggressive midfielder who wants to drive forward into the opposition penalty box and make things happen.

Image

Loanees - Charlie Daniels thoroughly enjoyed it at Orient, he found it tough but the reports back were that he did well. He was heavily involved as they went to the top of the league in the first part of the season. Andy Barcham joined him later and had that experience of playing regularly in League One. It was a fantastic experience for them, very beneficial.

The players i put in bold are players i rate highly and believe can make it into the first team.

Its not a massive deal, if a player wants to goes he will go, its just that every manager complains about thier players being subjects of stories or comments of other managers (Ferguson re. Ronaldo) and then when it is to thier benifit they make deliberate comments to upset another player's club.
I personally think players are treated like slaves these days

Day 9, July 11

"WE are now in Spain and the players have to adjust to the warmer conditions. I think they are enjoying the sun.

"The players went through a series of sprints on the golf course in the morning. These sprints included uphill runs and that was all about power work and getting strength in the legs. The sprints were all at different paces.

"Our football session in the evening was tactical, mostly about defending and protecting our goal.

"We are training with great facilities - good pitches, gym, close to the beach - and we are all happy, but it's hard work."

Spurs Bid For Pavlyuchenko Rejected

Tottenham Hotspur have been identified as the English Premier League club whose offer for Russian striker Roman Pavlyuchenko was rejected by his club, Spartak Moscow.

The Daily Mail reports that Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy had a £10million bid for Russia striker Roman Pavlyuchenko turned down by Spartak Moscow.

The Russian club reported earlier in the week that offers from two clubs, one of them English but not involved in the Champions League, had been received for striker Pavlyuchenko - and rejected.

The forward was one of the players to make an impact at Euro 2008. Spurs, whose players reported for pre-season training yesterday, were reportedly keen to sign him, particularly as there are question-marks over their existing strike force. Dimitar Berbatov has long been expected to move this summer, possibly to Manchester United, while Liverpool have declared an interest in Robbie Keane - and the Irishman who supported the Reds as a boy is believed to fancy the idea of a move to Anfield, though Spurs have slapped a 20million price-tag on his head.

Meanwhile, Darren Bent is being hotly pursued by Sunderland among others, and Peter Crouch, who also interested Spurs, appears to be heading from Liverpool to Portsmouth, closing one new striker option for Juande Ramos.

Now Spartak have closed another, insisting they will not sell Pavlyuchenko to a club who are not in next season's Champions League as that would not represent a step-up for the player.

Spartak general director Sergei Shavlo declared: "We have received two offers. One of them is from an English team.

"Since it's not a team playing in European Champions League we are more likely than not to reject their offer."

Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson has rejected a loan move to West Brom.

Robinson, who has lost his position as No.1 for Spurs and England, has also attracted interest from Aston Villa, and is currently keeping his options open, says the Mirror.

Cats Keane On Steed

Sunderland have reportedly expressed an interest in Steed Malbranque, whose days at Tottenham appear to be numbered…

Malbranque is one of 16 players who could get the chop at Spurs this summer, as manager Juande Ramos seeks to rebuild the squad virtually from scratch.

The Belgian-born midfielder’s fate seemed to be sealed when Ramos drafted in young guns Luka Modric and Giovani dos Santos, both attacking players who could fill Malbranque’s role on the left flank.

The 28-year-old has been linked with Aston Villa and Manchester City but Frederic Dobraje, the player’s agent, insisted only Sunderland have enquired about his client thus far.

“Sunderland are the only team to have been in touch about Steed,” Dobraje said in News of the World. “No other club, including Aston Villa, has made contact.”

Black Cats boss Roy Keane is eager to improve his squad in the hope of avoiding the relegation scrap, and could use wide-men in particular given the injury problems Carlos Edwards and Kieran Richardson suffered last term.

It is believed Spurs will consider all offers of ₤4million and ab

Making waves

The lads made a splash in a pre-season training session with a difference in Spain on Saturday.

With the sweat barely dry from another gruelling early-morning running shift on the golf course, Juande Ramos and the coaching team led the squad to the nearby beach for a series of tough sprints in the sand followed by lighter, team-bonding games of beach football and relays into the sea!

The first of the relays was a straight sprint with players having to carry a ball but then the routines took a twist as first the teams organised into threes to chair-lift one of their team through the waves and then into one, big 'chariot', with several players locked together carrying one on top!

The lads clearly loved it and first team coach Marcos Alvarez explained: "The sprinting routines in the sand were all about power work but then it was about a more fun element. The players enjoyed it and it's been a good day so far."

Spurs in Spain

The sun and sand of the morning was followed by the rain in Spain as our training camp continued on Saturday.

The sky turned black just minutes before the scheduled start of the third and final session and with lightning in the air, the players quickly took cover to let the storm pass. Ten minutes later and everyone was ready for action.

Saturday was a long day. It started with another tough run on the site's golf course at 8.30am local time (7.30am UK) - five times around a one-kilometre lap including running at different speeds and a 100-metre sprint in the middle. The sweat was literally dripping off the lads.

A short break was followed by a trip to the beach where the lads went through sprint exercises before splitting into groups for beach football relays and sprint relays into the sea.

After the rain, the final session was back to football with finishing drills and short-sided matches played at two-touch and three-touch before an 'all-in' game over three-quarters of the pitch. That session ended at 8.35pm local time.
